PROS

  • extraordinary skybox (beautifully done)
  • nice reverb effect
  • exceptional use of textures

CONS

  • to open, not enough cover
  • sniper style map (although I'm sure some think this is a pro)
  • no music? (maybe a pro as well)
  • botpaths-the nodes are present but the paths aren't built  :-/

COMMENTS

Well first lets give credit where credit due. The map was originally made by Andrew Penick way back in 1999. He got the idea from a game called Marathon Infinity and converted the map to unreal. Now that that's out of the way let's get down to the review. This map is literally "epic" quality. As far as remakes go I would have to say this is one of the best I've seen to date. This remake breaths new life into an old favorite (not mine btw) and has a complete makeover including new textures as well as effects and just way to much to mention without stopping for a breath of air. Lets start with the skybox. When I first saw the skybox I was totally amazed. I had been trying to create a skybox that rotated for a few years without success. Low and behold a beautiful rotation effect which works online as well. Heck the meteors even rotate. Outstanding!!! The textures are incredible as well and I can't help but wonder if they are high resolution as the detail is astounding. There is no music in the map but the echo is something to behold. There are various sound effects so it's not totally silent but a fast paced map like this one deserves some rip tearing music to add to the carnage. When viewing this map in unreal ed a whole world of advanced u-ed features are unveiled. The jump pad is directly incorporated into the map using the "mylevel" feature as well as some nifty animated textures which are used to create the mirrored surface on the portals (teleporters) There is also the use of scaled sprites which create the lights surrounding the jump pad and the tops of the antennas. The trap is made of one trigger, three special events and a dispatcher which calls down lightning from above that roars with an earth shattering crack and kills whoever is going for the shield belt. To activate it one must merely shoot the spot where all the energy beams come together up top. To cool!! Finally the botpaths, everything seems to be in place but alas the paths were never built. So if botmatch is your thing you will most assuredly be disappointed. (Krull must have forgot to hit the paths define button) Whoopsy, ah well who needs bots online anyway? To wrap it up I say this, if you haven't done so already go download this map right now as it will be a long time classic like "Unreal". This map was definitely made by an experienced mapper and one doesn't have to look far to appreciate the detail and effort put forth to create this masterpiece. It's maps like these that will keep unreal alive for a long time to come. Nicely done Krull. Your mapping skill suggests you should be doing the reviews.

Cheers!!

  • Geometry: 8/10 Sniper style map :-/
  • Lighting - 9/10 Excellent lighting.
  • Textures - 10/10 Unbelievable texturing. Something to behold.
  • Inventory - 8/10 Let the fragging begin!! Ammo is not a problem. Weapon placement sufficient.
  • Bots: - 1/10 The nodes are there but....
  • Overall - 7/10 A must have for any serious unrealer. (don't let the overall score fool you)
