It's been quite a while since oldunreal had an overhaul, but we are moving to another server which require some updates and changes. The biggest change is the migration of our old reliable YaBB forum to phpBB. This system expects you to login with your username and old password known from YaBB.
If you experience any problems there is also the usual "password forgotten" function. Don't forget to clear your browser cache!

Help starting server

It's been many years since I served any games with Unreal. I am the original Kap'n_Karnage and I am the one that started Inch High Sniper Guy. I seem to be doing something wrong in advanced settings or something because it does not advertise. I have already added the lines to the .ini file for both serving and joining but I either forget what all to set in advanced settings or something. Can someone kinda walk me thru what my settings need to be because it has been about 10 years. Really would appreciate some help just want to serve a couple custom maps I made way back when. Thanks in advance guys.

I am running windows 7. I served for years from 1999-2005 but am a complete newbie again now.

There is not much to do usually.
A lot of help you can find here:

and if you intend to use 227 you may want to have an additional look there:

other than that you need to update the masterserver list (with the one on the right upper corner). More info here:

Then you need to forward of course the serverports in your router (I'm usually using 7770 to 7790 to have some space) - of course depending on the portrange you want to use.
and set

Hey thanks Smirftsch I will definitely check all that stuff out. I would imagine I am close but just missing some silly thing similar to the douplink thing. Yea been awhile for sure but I love this game more than even my ps3 and my "Call of Duty" advanced warfare game. LOL. I really think I like the editor better though....always have. Thanks again

it will auto compress the files and put them into the compress dir (you may need to create it yet) - this way download times are reduced a lot since the files are up to 1/4 of original filesize. But this way only 227 clients can connect yet - but no idea how many pre 227 clients are actively playing still, although I doubt its much since people need to manually edit the masterservers then.

What's the point in using AllowOldClients=False ?
but no idea how many pre 227 clients are actively playing still
I guess, not a lot. 226b, 226a/final and even 224 are still in use, but the vast majority of online players is using either 227i or test builds of 227j.

Thing is, old clients can't distinguish between compressed and non compressed files, they will crash with UseCompression=True when trying to connect.

I didn't notice that. Just tried 224 and 226b - both downloaded required packages and joined successfully to server with such setting.

Double-checked. 227i client downloads a compressed package (size 38632 kB), 224 and 226b download the corresponding non-compressed package (40138 kB) - a big sound file. Nobody crashes. What am I doing wrong? :=)

It's original purpose was to print the "Sorry you need to upgrade" message so people don't download 227 only packages and just "Can't find function in file blah blah" or just plain old crash when connecting.

Looks like the server chooses what file to send depending on client version. If there is no a compressed version of a package on a server, the server does not create it when a pre-227 client is joined, but it does create a compressed package when a 227i/j client is joined (and sends it only to 227 clients).

wow I have tried everything and even got Time/Warner to show me how to config open ports on their router but still not working. I corrected the ini file as pointed out. I am at a loss. windows firewall is allowing access and the provided wireless router also. I start a dedicated server and it seems to be doing OK in task bar and the log seems ok but is not showing up when I try to find it in the server lists.

it's possible that you just can't see it yourself if on the same machine and IP, is it running right now? Also it may take a few moments until it shows up.

lol, yes of course that's the basic idea of it. I was just referring to the auto compress in this context.

we had problems with that in the beginning, but obviously ruled out. What I meant with older 227 clients was 227h when introducing this in 227i.

It has to be either in the ini file or somehow in windows firewall and my firewall says unreal has unfettered access

Are the proper ports forwarded in your router? And does your pc have a static IP?

By default you need port 7775-7780 UDP and TCP and port 27900 UDP forwarded. (Atleast that is what my working settings are).

Now I have even tried turning windows firewall off completely. I have a completely normal high speed (approx avg 36 mbps) connection with time/warner. Tech came on and took control of my puter as I watched him show me how to open ports. I am lost. It seems it was easier back in the day. And back then I could serve and see my server and join on same machine. Frustrating as heck.
