Yes I know, it was already fixed long time ago, but that's not the point.
No one can tell me they didn't know what they were doing and they never fixed it. It was the community which did their job which is more than sad. They sold and sell a product for hard cash which they know, that it has an issue.
And Anthology is not the only one, similiar things also happened with other games. I for myself would never support them, with buying such a product.

It looks to me that they really had no idea what they were doing. They were told to replace all the instances of the old Epic Games logo with the new one, and they did exactly that.

And you no longer support Midway when you buy the Anthology... because Midway is bankrupt already.

And who distributes the Unreal franchise games currently? Microsoft? Epic themselves?

Does Midway hold the rights to the franchise or is that Epic?

The Anthology DVD is not distributed at all as far as I can tell. There are leftovers from when it was distributed by Midway, but I suppose that's it. The games themselves, however, are distributed digitally by distributors like GOG.com, Valve, GameStop etc. Epic themselves act as the "publisher".

And only Epic has, has had, and will ever have, the rights to the Unreal franchise. (Theoretically they could sell it, but the Unreal Engine is part of it.)

Midway is Bankrupt there is no way they can hold the rights to Unreal Franchise. And Epic is being LAZY and won't even make a Singleplayer Unreal game.

All I can say here is, that Epic made absolutely clear in my mails with them, that they won't do anything anymore with UEngine1, that's entirely past. No franchise, no licenses.

I can understand that they don't want to have their name associated with games made today with 15 years old technology. This is prefectly reasonnable, and there are free engines that are more powerful out there.

This being said, they'd be great lords if they released under GPL, like the old Quake engines.

They still own the franchise. It includes everything from Unreal to Unreal Tournament 3, and they definitely don't want to abandon the legacy of all of them. But of course they don't maintain them any more, too.

I think smirftsch meant they don't want to make a new franchise on the UE1 or sell it to someone to do it. Not that they're abandoning all franchises made with ue1.

Hey folks,
Sorry to have dropped off the radar the past couple weeks.  I have been busy trying to install my old games and deal with the various challenges each one introduces.  I'm not even close to being finished.  I've also had a few "revelations" about my hardware which ultimately solved many problems including getting Unreal 227i to run finally.

It was the soundcard!  The Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1 (model SB0220 specifically) is a piece of junk!  I found this out after having problems with other installs and finally stumbled upon a forum where the issues with this particular card are detailed.  Now I have done some soundcard juggling and my WinXP box is using the SB X-Fi Elite Pro.  Unreal runs like hot butter and looks amazing.  I have not had time to copy in the hi-res texture files yet but that should not be an issue.

Other problems I encountered were downloading driver files that ended up being infected, forcing me to have to reinstall my Win98SE box from scratch (twice).

BTW, I mentioned previously I found a Sony Trinitron 24" widescreen CRT monitor.  Well the guy had one that had less than 100 hours of use with all the goodies still factory wrapped.  He's totally legit and has been in the monitor business for 35 years.  I bought it and should have it in about a week.  It's being shipped with a declared value of $2000 so UPS is being very picky about the packing.  He had to buy a custom double wall oversized box to put the original box inside to protect it or they will not ship it.  It ships tomorrow.

I will be sharing it between my WinXP and Win98SE boxes.  I can't wait to see this monitor.  It has the reputation of being the best CRT monitor ever made.

I should say here I've been surprised more than once at how some of my old games have been ported so they can work on newer computers.  My Win98SE box will be used strictly for games that don't work anywhere else.

Yea, Creative is overall pretty bad when it comes to drivers, unfortunately. And yes, Win98, as it has been out of support for a while now, is an extremely easy target for viruses. It will be the same with XP in a few years. Generally you want to disable networking on unsupported systems like that.

Only can agree. Had many trouble in the past with creative labs drivers, although since I have my Audigy2 ZS it's working pretty flawlessly- and this is not really new anymore too :)

Well I copied in the extreme and high end textures. All I can say is...WOW! Unreal looks brand new! Extremely good job and my utmost appreciation to all who did the work. Thank you so much.

One last question. Do I delete the NaPali folder on my C drive or uninstall RTNP from the control panel? If I don't uninstall, it seems to me the program would remain in my Add/Remove Programs list.

I did try to uninstall by the way. But I received a message that Unreal was still running even though I had started Unreal 227 and then quit. I looked in Task Manager and saw the Unreal exe still listed on the Processes tab.

Thanks

Unreal.exe should not remain active. Kill it, then uninstall RTNP, since your other installation includes it. There should be an uninstall option in your control panel.

If you keep having this problem of Unreal.exe staying alive after you quit the game, then you have a problem.

Okay...I killed the Unreal.exe in Task Manager and uninstalled RTNP.  I then rebooted.  When I launch Unreal I now see the RTNP splash screen just as described in the merge instructions.  The game runs fine but I'm still seeing the EXE in Task Manager after I quit.

I followed the merge instructions exactly so I have no idea why this is happening.

Unreal not closing properly... I don't have a suggestion for this.

Okay. I'll try starting over from scratch...making sure the EXE is not active before reinstalling. All I can think is that I may have tried running Unreal before patching to 227 and that somehow left something behind that the rest of the install is corrupted by.

I tried a complete reinstall from scratch. I rebooted after each install (Unreal and RTNP) and patch application (official and 227i). I then uninstalled RTNP and reboot once more. Then I ran Unreal...played until I left the ship...saved and quit. The EXE is still active under Task Manager. I guess I'll just have to live with it unless somebody else knows what is happening and has a solution.

Thanks

Check your log after you exit it (both before and after you kill the process). Also see if typing "exit" (or is it "quit"?) in the console makes it turn off gracefully or not.

I tried quitting from the console...no difference. The logs don't show anything that stands out for me. Is there something specific I should be looking at?

Yes, what part of the log is missing when the process is hung, as opposed to the full log that you should get once you kill it.

Below is the full log. I checked it immediately after exiting the game but before killing the EXE in Task Manager. I then killed the EXE and looked again...there is no update to the log.

One thing of interest...I discovered that Internet Explorer kept freezing until I killed the EXE.

Note that you should upload logs to http://pastebin.com in order to preserve space on the boards.

But this is interesting, does the time ("Uninitialized: Log file closed, 12/07/12 17:43:13") show the correct time of closing the game (and before you kill the process)? Overall it seems like it freed all the resources, but kept being a zombie process. Really odd, and suggests issues in the OS...

that's indeed kinda weird, it looks like it shuts down as intended. If the process still alive there must be something still keeping it there. Maybe try without sound using the -nosound option or with another sounddevice and another rendering device, just to see if it behaves any different. Also trying without antivirus could be worth the try. In any case I am not aware about any other system with this problem so far.
