Help Setting Up Unreal

Hi,
This is my first post.  I have some questions on setting up Unreal that I wish to ask before going to far and creating problems that could hopefully be avoided.  First, let me tell you what I have for hardware/software.

I bought an old Gateway computer to resurrect Win98SE.

P4 1.8gHz (Intel 473 with 850 chipset)...850 drivers installed
512 megs RAM (4x128)
nVidia MX400 (AGP) with 64 megs RAM
Diamond Monster 3DII (Voodoo2) PCI
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 (new)
Microsoft Optical Wheel Mouse (USB)
Gateway VX920 19" CRT monitor (nearly new!)

Software:
Original Unreal CD
Original Unreal Expansion (RTNP) CD
Original Diamond Monster 3DII Installation CD
FastVoodoo2 4.6 (custom driver for above card)
nVidia 81.98 Forceware graphics driver

Patches (from old Unreal downloads)
Official Unreal Patch 226F
Official RTMP Patch
Unofficial Unreal Classic Patch 227F
Unofficial Unreal Gold Patch 227F

Right now I have the FastVoodoo2 4.6 driver installed for the Voodoo2 card.

So far I have only installed Unreal and applied the official 226F patch.  When I started the game for the first time, it asked if I had a 3DFX card installed and I replied "Yes".  The castle flyby screen appeared and ran for about a minute.  While running, I entered the video/audio and set resolution to 1024x768 but before I could move on to apply the settings change, the screen froze.

I forced a shutdown of the game, rebooted, and tried again.  It froze within seconds this time.  I uninstalled the game...rebooted...reinstalled...but this time answered "No" to the 3DFX question.  It now runs but I only have 800x600 max resolution available.

I've tried to make sense of the order in which I install game CD's and apply patches.  My current understanding is I should patch to at least 226B before applying unofficial patch 227F.  But I wonder is I should install the game, then the 226 patch, then the RTNP expansion and its official patch before applying the 227F Gold patch.  It's confusing.

I also wonder if the Voodoo2 card or the custom driver I found on the Internet for it may be causing the freeze mentioned above.  Perhaps I should try the driver that came with the card and see what happens.  I'd really like to get to 1024x768 since my monitor is large.

I know this is a lot of information.  I hope someone here can help me with the order of installation and also give some insight regarding the Voodoo2 card and drivers.  I took the Voodoo2 card off my very old P3 450mHz computer.  I thought with the custom driver I might be able to use it with this rig.

Thanks

*Ouch*

My Advice is to just Save Up as much money as you can and just Build yourself a Gaming Rig or Buy a Gaming Rig so that way you can play 1998-2014 Games with No Lag.

Thanks. Have you been able to do that yourself? What are you running Unreal on?

I looked into the idea of buying modern hardware to run Win98SE on...it's very difficult to find drivers for Win98SE that support it which is why I bought what I have. It's a mix of parts I still had and stuff I found on eBay.

The P4 box is nearly identical to a Gateway computer I bought new back in 2002 (Gateway P4 2.2gHz 500X with WinXP Pro...this one is a 500C 1.8gHz and originally came with Win98SE installed).

well, first of, you don't need Win98 in order to run 227 correctly it runs fine so far up to Win7 64bit and I guess Win8 should work flawlessly too (no reports yet).
Except of course you want to use your old hardware and glide - while there are some usable glidewrappers out there too :).

To answer your question:
To install the 227 Gold patch you should first install Classic, then your RTNP. This makes it basically to Unreal RTNP 224.
Then update this to latest 226b, which makes it equal to UnrealGold, then apply the 227 patch.
Be sure to have the RTNP maps in a subfolder named UPak in the Maps directory to be 100% equally to UnrealGold installation. The installer won't accept it otherwise.

My System Can't play all the Newest Games on Ultra but I can Play them on Low.

Operating System: Win7 32bit
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 5670 -$80.99
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor (4 CPUs) - $116.99
RAM: 4GB (DDR2) - Cheap.
PSU: Core Sair 700 - $84.99

Dont waste you time attempting to install 227 on win98 , it will never work sadly. >:(
227 outright will refuse to start.
227 + "proper" 3dfx will never happen. official drivers dont exist for xp.
I know a freind who uses  3dfx still for unreal.win me/2000 is the most recent windows that still supports his drivers.

if you choose upgrade , stick with xp if you can , less issues with older drivers then win7....
unreal is still stuck with dx9 in 227 , so you wont see much if any improvement and you might get 'new' problems like i did with win7.

Thanks to all for your answers.  I was not aware this game would run in WinXP and above.  I did a Google to see if it ran on these systems (or at least I thought I did...must be getting old).

I have three computers.  Win7 Home Pro on a X79/i7 3.2 SB-E, WinXP Pro on an X58/i7 2.6 Quad, and this box with Win98SE which I set up mostly to run games that can't run natively on anything but.

I did get it to run on the Win98SE box finally.  It looks like it doesn't like the Voodoo2 card.  If I answer "No" during first run (with the 226F patch), I get the higher resolutions and no problems.  But now I will install on WinXP or maybe Win7.  I have a 24" LCD on the Win7 so that might look sweet if the resolution is available.

Can someone point me to the best texture pack that keeps the original game appearance intact?  The download section is confusing to me and some of the links don't work.

Thanks much!

Here is the Texture Packs.

You might want to use Low End Video Cards and Download all 5 Packs.

If I install on my WinXP box, it has a geForce GTX295.  Would I still use the Low End Card textures as you suggested?  Sorry I'm not fluent in these texture files.  All I know is they improve graphics but no nothing at the nuts and bolts level.

Editted to add:
Okay I see the various texture files (low, high, extreme). I suppose I can try the extreme and see what happens then work down if I have to. One question...are the 5 downloads for low and high independent of each other or are they a set?

Extreme End only comes with a Few Textures so You will have to Download High End first than drop the .utx Files into your Texture Folder then Drop the Extreme End .utx files into your Texture Folder and Replace the High End.

If you Experience any Lag or Bad Performance Then use Low End but you might want to ask the Moderators first before you do any of this.

Can you tell me which links don't work? Although some are probably outdated they should work at least...

The only one available gives a 404.

I'm still confused about the texture files to download. The webpage doesn't explain the differences between each download or what you actually need.

In the Extreme section for example, you see "Missing High End Files" and then you see, "Crypt.utx" and then another and another and so on. Each section has four download buttons with only one or two saying they are up to date with the last being a last resort. Great...but what are they?

Do I need only one? Is each section an alternate theme? Do the files from each section all go together? Are they variations giving the game a different appearance depending on which one you use?

This lack of clarity exists in all the sections (Extreme, High, and Low). Forgive me but I think it would beneficial to have some bit of an explanation for people like me who are coming in after the fact and were not part of the development and deployment of these files.

I'm sure it's probably simple but without keystone information even the most basic understanding can be fleeting. Can I please get some help on this?

Thanks

Gonna point DieHard to this topic to read this, as it's his page :)

Well, indeed its pretty simple. Each package like Crypt.utx, DecayedS.utx etc are containing the replacement high res textures for the corresponding original .utx file in the Textures folder. So you need each of these.
You'll probably notice that there is no replacement for every single utx file- that is where the missing high end files package is needed. There are no extreme end packages for those yet, so you have to grab the high end instead and this package contains them.

Hope this helps a bit :)

Thanks for your help. I have downloaded the 5 High end master files. Right now I'm downloading the Extreme Missing Files which is very slow (58K on average). And if I understand you right, I must also download one each of all the other "Extreme" sections (such as Crypt.utx) on this same download page. Correct?

Like I said Extreme only comes with a Few Files so It is Tiny.

I think we're not on the same page. The Extreme Missing High End file I'm downloading right now is 212MB. There are about a dozen other selections below it on the same download page.

Some of those are for UT so make sure you're not downloading any UT Files.

This is where I'm at:

"S3TC Stock Unreal Textures (Extreme End)"

I got there by clicking your link and then clicking on the Extreme link.  There are 16 different sections beginning with the Missing High End Files.  Next is Crypt.utx which was fairly small.  Next is DecayedS.utx which is HUGE (670mb).  These are all on the same download page so I don't think they are for UT.

Added:
Now I'm getting a bandwidth exceeded message and cannot download any more files. But I figured out I need to go to the alternative site to download. I guess I exhausted the WOLF site.

I think I have what I need for High End only files. The only thing that is confusing me now are all these Extreme downloads (all listed on the same page).

BTW...the navigation buttons on the left panel of the Textures website are extremely non-intuitive. It took me 10 minutes of trial and error to actually get to the downloads before using the link you posted.

Then yeah those should be the right files.

I've downloaded all the texture files. I have Unreal and the mission pack installed. They installed to seperate folders. Do I copy these files to both texture folders or should I have installed the mission pack to the unreal folder instead of the default "c:\napali" folder so I would only have one texture folder to deal with?

Thanks

the textures need to be placed into the folder of the game you play. So if you have 2 installations because the installer made it that way, you'd have to put the textures in both of these to be able to use them in both RTNP and Unreal.
However, if you merge these to one folder (I just wrote this down in the 227i install topic), then you need to place the textures only in the folder you merged the installs and you applied the patch to.

Guess I will write this all down again once you managed to make it work. Maybe you can help me with that step by step tutorial then :)
