We need a list of OpenGL terms

Post by Goofus_Maximus »

We need some sort of description of obscure OpenGL terms used in these drivers.

What, for instance, are Sharelists, and what are their advantages/disadvantages?

Ditto for:

MaxLogTextureSize ( I know these are sizes, but that's it)
MinLogTextureSize

MaxLogVOverU (NO clue what these are)
MaxLogUOverV

DisableSpecialDT (uh...)
UseFilterSGIS (...)
Use4444Textures
UseVertexSpecular

some of them are easy to explain, some other are not, use 444 textures is f.e. some setting to increase performance at the cost of quality, for low-end grafix cards, for the others, maybe filter is of interest too, will see if i can find some good explanations...

The RefreshRate= option is quite useful, because the default monitor refresh rate of Unreal is 60hz, which causes headache. Change it to a higher value that your monitor supports at the resolution you use.
I use RefreshRate=100 to set it to 100Hz :)

the refresh rate setting, yes, but thats only 95% true, Unreal uses the Desktop refresh rate for the same resolution & color depth which is set in windows; At least it did so for me in win95/98/Me, not sure for 2k and XP, and this for kyro, radeon and geforce cards...:) - this setting can be used if this isnt working or you want to override it ;)

In fact win 9x (and so ME) did not implement the refresh rate setting the same way XP and 2000 did. win 9x forced the refresh rate of application to the desktop current setting.
In XP an application is supposed to set it's disired refresh rate. But most of them do not so, wee need special tool to prevent it from defaulting to 60 Hz, rather defaulting to the max.

But in unreal the setting exists, so no problem just set it to the max your screen supports at a given resolution, videocard drivers should prevent you from going too high anyway.

The refresh rate item I understand, and I set it to zero, so that the game uses my desktop default.

I'd sure like to know what SHARELISTS are though, and the MaxLogUoverV stuff... How can I tell how best to tweak my system, till I know what these things are actually doing? :D

Ye, guys, you ought to do it long ago. How can I know
is GF3 profile suit to my card or not ? My card unlike GF3 doesn't support shaders. Does your OpenGL driver use it ? etc
I suggest to create a full description of driver variables
and put it on the main page.

Nor Unreal nor OldUnreal's OpenGl driver use the pixelshaders of the GeForce 3+ / Radeon 8500+

DetailMax= is the number of detail texture layers.
Possible valuses:
0 = No detail textures.
1 = one layer of detail textures.
2 = two layers of detail textures.

(You can not have more than 2 layers)

Detail textures ahve quite a large impact on the performance. If you need high performance, disable detail textures. If you want a good image quality, try value 1 and 2 and watch your framarate.

In fact you can push the detail as much as you want, but beyond 2 it is hardly visible. you can see it if you become ghost and watch screens very close.
