What are the chances of another UT patch?

UT now belongs to the "old" Unreal as well. Supporting it for OpenGL and Sound its time to put up a board now.

What are the chances of another UT patch?

Post by Gizzy »

After 227 becomes final, would UT ever recieve the same treatment? I know that Smirf made a proposal for a new patch on a few UT forums and was basically told to STFU and GTFO. :(

I for one (don't play UT that much, but) would love to see UT get the same attention that Unreal 1 has been getting. After UTPG seemingly vanished, leaving the latest unofficial version (451b) half-finished (Along with a broken editor), I think a NEW new patch for UT is needed. I refuse to update past 436.

I realise that 227 is everything UT can do, and MUCH more, but still....being able to play UT with all these fixes and improvements would be amazing.

For one, I don't need it. The only redeeming factor of UT now are models (although you can mod them into Unreal) and Domination.

Smirf and I have talked about it before, it's a possibility. But as for when.. we've no idea.

Stuff like Deus Ex and Unreal 2 need more attention than UT for bug fixing/feature reimplementing though imo

edit: there is an unreleased UTPG patch in the 46x range but I have no idea what it does, smirf only mentioned it once

they made 4.68 but it was never released. I asked for general permission to update UT once 227 is done, but Epic didn't give me. End of story, sorry.

As a singleplayer mapper who has been impressed with the 227 patch since version f (so much so that all my future SP endeavors will be geared for dual platforms between 227 Unreal and UT), and as a UT fan, I'd be willing to support any forthcoming UT patch. I even considered putting my team to the task itself. In what capacity, I can't say. But there are those of us who love the original UT as much as we do Unreal, and we are willing at the very least to discuss such matters.

any support is greatly welcome.
Situation is the following:
Epic gave me the NDA to maintain and update Unreal and that is what I'm doing. That for I was invited into the UTPG team, in which I never was active since I was busy alone with Unreal, but I was given the UT sources also.
The last version I have is never released version 4.68, but the problem is, I have no official permission to release something for UT.
Currently Epic answers pretty any question I have with something like "We don't have the bandwidth to..."

The only chance I currently is see is to concentrate on 227g and release it asap. Once its out and hopefully a success it will maybe result in enough public attention to make them a bit more interested in what we are doing here and I will get the necessary permissions to update UT also.

Indeed, either way it's better to concentrate on 227 and not be distracted by anything else, or it won't ever reach final :)

I agree with the above poster. UT will come in time, till then focus on your priorities which right now is Unreal 227. Then after its been completed & a final has officially been announced, then we can all worry about UT99. One thing at a time. It will make the workload alot easier to deal with.

The good thing with that is it will be relatively easy to merge 227's updates with UT and then we will just need to know about any script bugs, which I no of none myself having not really modded extensively in UT

What about mod/mutator compatibility? Say you did a UT '452' and you update it the same way you have with Unreal 227. Would it still work with all the mods/mutators/models etc.. Speaking theoretically of course.

long answer: I would say, just like with 227, for the vast majority they would all function perfectly. There may be a few isolated cases but since then most of those have been corrected in 227.

Short answer : don't worry about it, it will be fine

Sounds good, there deffinitely seems to be a big demand for it, not only from players but from modders too. This will be very much worth discussing again in the future. Theres some excellent input on the future of UT99. And its good to see people like the idea of it, as a big UT99 fan this would be great to see.
