Maximum Visual Quality settings for UT99 v4.36

UT now belongs to the "old" Unreal as well. Supporting it for OpenGL and Sound its time to put up a board now.

Maximum Visual Quality settings for UT99 v4.36

Post by WonderSlug »

Hello.

I am running UT99 under the latest OpenGL renderer I can find (the OMP-UT-V02 one) with 1600x1200x32-bit @ 85 Hz on a 21" CRT monitor.

I'd like to get the maximum quality settings, regardless of frame rate, because I think my frame rates are already high enough (usually 80+ fps normally or 60+ fps when there's a lot of action going on).

Here's my set up:

CPU: Intel P4 3.0 GHz
RAM: 2 GB
OS: Windows XP SP3 with DirectX 9.0c and all Windows Updates as of May 2009

Video Card: nVidia GeForce 7600GT 512MB AGP 8x
Sound Card: Creative Audigy 2 PCI

Because I'm running UT99 at such a high resolution, I really don't need AA, so I'm not using it, and really don't care to use it.

Here's how I installed UT:

1.) Installed UT GOTY v4.32 from CD
2.) Patched to Version 4.36
3.) Copied over the S3TC textures on second CD.
4.) Downloaded and installed the S3TC Hi-Rez textures for UT from UnrealTexture
5.) Downloaded and installed the OMP-UT-V02 update for video/audio renderers.

So, hopefully that was the correct update for UT99 with OpenGL.  I noticed that OpenGL runs better than D3D with UT99 on my system, so I'm sticking with it.

Here is the relavent renderer sections of my UnrealTournament.ini file:

So, anything I need to change or add to increase the visual quality under OpenGL, or is it already set?

Also, if you notice, I have Use444Textures and Use4444Textures set to false.  I didn't know which one was proper/redundant since I've gleaned from sites that had both.

Anything else redundant?

Thank you medor.

Those updated OpenGL and D3D9 renderers work great.

I had used the D3D renderer that came with UT99 436 and upon exiting, there was a long time before the app released and shut down, while the CPU utilization often went to 99%. With the new D3D9 renderer it doesn't happen and releases and shuts down as quickly as OpenGL.

The new D3D9 renderer seems to have the same visual quality and performance on my system as the OpenGL one.

Is there any real difference between the two, or are they equally good?

Also, I have Unreal Gold installed (which is Unreal Classic + Na Pali Expansion, updated to v2.26b). Since UGOLD presents a screen like UT99, can I use these two new renderers with that as well?

No, you can not. Download the 227 patch instead, the newest renderers are there.

I thought the 227f patch doesn't work well with Unreal Gold and S3TC Hi-Res textures.   At least it doesn't on my install.  I even tried re-installing Unreal Gold from CD and adding the S3TC Hi-Res textures back in, before installing the 227f patch.

I get weird or missing textures on the flybys, and in the game as well.

In addition, doesn't upgrading Unreal Gold to 227f right now take away the ability to play the Return to Na Pali expansion portion of Unreal Gold?

Yes, for now it does.
But there are no problems with S3TC... Maybe you have UseS3TC set to false in your INI?

Yeah, I finally got it working with S3TC with the new renderers.  Because I was playing the RTNP expansion, I had an original UGOLD v226b install of System, and was using the old D3D renderer that came with it.  That renderer doesn't work well with the S3TC textures.

So, my UnrealGold folder now has two textures folders and two system folders:

Textures_Gold = Default textures that come with UGold

Textures = Upgraded S3TC Hi-Rez textures

System = UGold updated with 227f

System_Gold = Original UGold 226b install from CD

So, to play the regular Unreal, I run the version in "System".

For RTNP expansion, I run the version in "System_Gold" that points to Textures_Gold.

I'll be glad when 227f is truly finalized so it properly detects and updates UnrealGold to include the new UT99-style Gold console and can select Na Pali in the "Game" list.

I have the more-folders thing too, but I have few separate Unreal folders.
