Guide to expanding Unreal Tournament gameplay

Post by GreatEmerald »

I have written this guide so people could easily make their Unreal Tournament game a lot better to play. If many people completed everything mentioned in this guide, possible there would be a new range of servers (or a mod for contacting Unreal servers) for the Unreal Tournament merged edition, as I call it :) Basically here I will show you how to merge Unreal Tournament with Unreal and Return to Na Pali as well as some more tips and tricks. You can use this guide whereever you want as long as you give credit :) So lets begin (it is long so it takes a few posts to complete it).

Guide to expanding Unreal Tournament gameplay

By following this guide you will make your Unreal Tournament game compatible with many more maps as well as adding several other maps, will also add more features, advanced configuration, new models, pickups, weapons, mutators, game types and many more things you will enjoy!

Part I: Unreal Tournament Bonus packs and patches
Requirements: None!

After you install Unreal Tournament, make sure your Unreal Tournament is patched to the latest version and that you have the official Bonus packs. They add new game types, more maps, models, mutators and more things for your game!
In total, there are four Bonus packs: The Epic pack (1), the Digital Extremes pack (2), the Inoxx pack (3), the fourth pack (4). Patches and Bonus packs as well as a few more useful things can be downloaded from the BeyondUnreal Essential files page here: http://www.beyondunreal.com/main/ut/utessential.php Simply use the Essential Files Wizard to see what you need, download and install them by following the instuctions found in the Readme files (if there are none, simply double-click on the .UMOD file and install it).
Congratulations, you now have access to many new things and easier access to the Unreal Tournament servers.

Part II: Unreal Tournament Bonus CD
Requirements: Unreal Tournament Bonus CD

If you have the Unreal Tournament Bonus CD, you can have a new range of weapons, maps, advanced configuration, new graphics, mutators and more. All you need is to install the Bonus CD! When you insert the CD, the installation will start automatically. When you need to choose packages to install, check if your computer supports S3TC compressed textures. If it does, install all packages, if it doesn't don't install only S3TC textures. If you are not sure, install everything.
Congratulations, you can now enjoy ChaosUT mod and all other features of the Bonus CD!

Part III: Merging Unreal Tournament with Unreal (pt. 1/2)
Requirements: either Unreal CD or Unreal Gold CD

If you have the Unreal CD or the Unreal Gold CD, you can merge two games into one! This will allow you to enjoy all of the features of Unreal as well as more features coming from Unreal Tournament, and in one game!
The first part of the merge will let you play any maps that were made for Unreal as well as will add all the maps from the Unreal/Unreal Gold CD! It is very easy to do, as Unreal Tournament was originally planned to be an expansion for Unreal.
Basically all you need to do is copy all the files from your Unreal/Unreal Gold CD to your UnrealTournament folder. Here is a detailed description for that:
1. Find the folder where you installed Unreal Tournament. It is usually in C:/UnrealTournament, but can be elsewhere depending on where you installed it.
Tip: to get there quickly, right-click on the shortcut to Unreal Tournament (the one you use to launch the game), click "Properties", then "Find Target" and locate and click on the "Up" button (a folder with an arrow at the top).
2. Insert your Unreal/Unreal Gold CD, click "Exit" and open it by going to "My Computer", right-clicking on the CD and selecting "Open".
3. In the CD, select the following folders: TEXTURES, SYSTEM, SOUNDS, MUSIC, HELP, MAPS. Copy them to the UnrealTournament folder on your hard drive. ATTENTION! During copy, when you are asked if you want to overwrite files, ALWAYS select NO! Or else, you will destroy your Unreal Tournament installation.
Congratulations, you can now run any map made for Unreal with all of the Unreal Tournament functions!
Known bugs: when playing maps for Unreal, when you pick up a RifleRound, all of your weapons except the one you are using at the moment as well as all other items you have in your inventory disappear. That might be really annoying in some situations. There is no known fix for that yet except for manually changing all RifleRound actors to RifleShell actors from the UnrealEd, but we can expect a fix for that soon!

Part IV: Finalizing the merge with Unreal (pt. 2/2)
Requirements: either Unreal CD or Unreal Gold CD

Now you can play Unreal maps, but you can't play the single player campaign nor use the original Unreal HUD or original weapons. For unlocking all of the Unreal features, you will need to get Usaar33's Oldskool AMP'd mod from here: http://www.usaar33.com/ Simply download the Oldskool mod and install it by following the instructions found in the Readme file. You can also install the additional mods within the package such as the music mod.
Congratulations! You can now play the original Unreal episode from UnrealTournament and with many customizable things like weapons, air control etc. You can set everything to Unreal Tournament style or to the original Unreal style. One mod from the package lets you add the original Unreal models (the Skaarj ones are even colourful!) to Unreal Tournament.
Known bugs: When you use the original Unreal Skaarj models, don't forget to set their colour or they will have only one odd texture on them!

Part V: Merging Unreal: Return to Na Pali with Unreal Tournament
Requirements: Return to Na Pali CD or Unreal Gold CD

You can now use all of the Unreal functions now, but what about Return to Na Pali maps and campaign? It is possible to merge that as well! First, you need to copy the Return to Na Pali contents to your UnrealTournament folder (those who have Unreal Gold CD and have followed the Part III of this guide already have the contents copied). Do the same as you did in Part III, but this time with your Return to Na Pali CD, without replacing anything this time as well! After copying the files, both Unreal: Returnt to Na Pali CD and Unreal Gold CD owners should look at the folders "Textures", "System", "Sounds", "Music", "Help" and "Maps" and look for a folder named "Upak". When you find one (for Unreal Gold it is only in the Maps folder), copy the contents of the folder into the parent folder (the one where you found the "Upak" folder). Now you have to integrate Return to Na Pali into your Unreal Tournament game. You can do this by going to the Upak Central page here: http://www.geocities.com/atifriaz/unreal.htm and downloading the eagleAR RtNP2UT mod (the last link below the screenshot). You might have to click the link again after logging in to FilePlanet. After downloading, back up your UnrealTournament/System folder. Install the mod, as usually, bu following the instructions in the Readme file. In this case, you will need to replace the files - only this time when asked if you want to replace the files, select "Yes to all". But DON'T change the UnrealTournament.ini like it says in the Readme as that will disable other mods and won't change anything.
Congratulations, you can now play any maps made for both Unreal and Unreal: Return to Na Pali, installed the original Return to Na Pali maps and have new pickups as well as new weapons and can play the Return to Na Pali campaign! Even more: as a side-effect, you have unlocked a new model, Boss Xan!
Known bugs: You might get two error messages when trying to play Return to Na Pali maps once every session. Don't worry and just ignore both. Sometimes Return to Na Pali campaigns might not work (instead, display a black screen; that might be only Unreal Gold issue). No fix is known yet, but you can play single maps from the campaign anyway.

Part VI: Modifications
Requirements: None!

There are many useful modifications for Unreal Tournament. Whether you should use one or not depends on yourself, but all are easy to install and use. Here I will tell you about a few of those.
A good page for useful mods is Wormbo's Mod page: http://www.koehler-homepage.de/Wormbo/download.html
Here you can find the BeyondUnreal Forums Bonus pack, which is an unofficial Bonus pack. It adds new weapons and pickups, mostly for fun.
Note: Playing a map for Unreal or Return to Na Pali, some weapons will be changed to BeyondUnreal Forums bonus weapons if you use the mutator when playing ones.
Another useful mod is the Enhanced Items mod. It makes modifies the original Unreal Tournament weapons, but the modifications are very slight and mostly only changes the appearance or sounds of them.
Note: when using this mutator with maps for Unreal or Return to Na Pali, you will get the original weapons from Unreal instead of Unreal Tournament ones. This might be fun but might also be annoying.
Another interesting mod is the Redeemer 2k4. It changes the explosion animation of the Redeemer and the Relic of Vengeance as well as the HUD of the Redeemer when using the Alternative fire. It looks a lot better than the original Unreal Tournament explosion (when fired to the sky with stars, it looks like one has exploded!).
The best modification from the Wormbo's list is probably the Arena Match. Did you enjoy playing with Weapon Match mutators? The Arena Match lets you select a lot larger variety of weapons for the Arena matches - even those that you can't normally find in any maps, for example, the Quadshot! Or you could make a nuclear arena by using the Redeemer as the only unlimited weapon in the match! The Arena Match mod integrates well with other mods like Redeemer 2K4 or Oldskool.
Note: Even if you set Unlimited ammo, use the "Place ammo on map" option. This will result in better bot pathing.

Part VII: Title screen
Requirements: None!

Are you bored of seeing the same title screen each time Unreal Tournament starts? Do you want the game loading quicker? All of these can be changed by changing the title screen.
It is easy. First, you have to actually know what title screen do you want. You can use one of these that you already have in your UnrealTournament/Maps folder:
EOL_Statues
UTCredits
UT-Logo-Map
If you followed the Part III of the guide, you can use these:
Unreal
Endgame
UGCredits
If you followed the Part V of the guide, you can use these:
Upack
End
To watch them, when you have Unreal Tournament open, press the tilde button (~) and enter "open filename" where filename is one of the names above. You can also create your own if you are familiar with UnrealEd.
To change the title, make a copy of the file you want (in your UnrealTournament/Maps folder), then rename CityIntro.unr to something like CityIntro2.unr and rename your copied title file to CityIntro.unr. If you used the ones which are after UT-Logo-Map in the list above, open UnrealEd (in your UnrealTournament/System folder called UnrealEd.exe), wait for it to load, click "File", "Open", find CityIntro.unr, open it, then click "View", "Level Properties", click on a + sign where you see "LevelInfo", then click on the line DefaultGameType and enter the words you see below in the box to the DefaultGameType line, overwriting anything that was in the box before (do NOT enter the "Code:" nor the space after the ' character):

Code: Select all

Class'Botpack.UTIntro'
Close the box, click on "File", "Save" and close UnrealEd.
Now your title screen is changed! But you can do a few more changes. When you press the Esc button, you see the U letter (or the word "Unreal Tournament") if you have the Show Desktop option set. But you can change this the same way you changed the title screen, but this time instead of using the CityIntro.unr file, use the Entry.unr file. Everything else is the same!
Congratulations, you now have a fully expanded and customized Unreal Tournament game! Happy gaming, don't be afraid of experimenting on mods and enjoy Unreal Tournament!

Yes good work.

I would like to add a small comment/improvement:

To add Unreal One resources to UT, it is not necessary to COPY the files over. Just edit your UnrealTournament.ini and add your Unreal directories to them. On the same drive your can address relatively (to your UT system dir, so adding Unreal One textures might be something like the path: ../../Unreal/Textures).

Yes, it is possible to use paths, but I don't think it is very easy to use as if you would set the path to the CD you would have to keep it inserted. Copying to another directory would work better but you would still need to write an extra path. But it is a good thing to mention if you already have Unreal 1 installed, it would save space, so I might implement it.
