I remember screenshots like these from the Dutch gaming magazine "Power Unlimited" a few years(!) before the games release. A legend before it was born.

I like the use of shadows to enhance the overall atmosphere of the scene.

From 1983 to 2009 (approx) I tried to read every book and article on game design that I could find. When it comes to level design there's two aspects that were mentioned almost every time as most important in creating an atmosphere. Lighting (proper use of colored lighting) and background sound effects.

Articles by Chris Taylor (Gas Powered Games) and Cliff Blezinski (Epic Games) are two examples of this.

It's about time to show some of the areas as this topic is pretty outdated...
I killed every scriptedpawn in order to not give everything away.

The conveyor belt area.

A mine area as seen in the trailer.

The big cave as seen in a tiny pic.

I had to remake this door texture as well.

Tunelu.

The outside "HUB" area.

The scene from the screenshot that has started it all.

An improvised low-poly cave segment.

Another scene from a screenshot.

This is so quake-like it smells of quad damage.
The lighting is very much responsible for it, I believe. Only white lamps and a lot of shadows. With the big blocky architecture, it's strongly reminiscent of that time.
You must construct additional pylons.

Gotta love all the retro stuff going on in the gaming world. That, and all the remastering of games to include all the fancy graphic effects, etc.

Even Borderlands 2, which is powered by Unreal technology, has been remastered.
