Third-party program for creating Terrain recommendation?

Post by Veil Morren »

I've been reading some topics about "Terrain" and it's come to my attention that, i think, most of Unreal's maps have been created by third-party programs such as Blender, for example.

I love editing, i love it's freedom to create anything i want, how i want and when i want, but i've no idea how to create a decent Terrain like Nyleve Falls or Spire Village (Spire Village's dark styled Skybox is AWESOME), which is a problem  [smiley=cry.gif] . For someone technically new like me at Terrain creating (I know a thing or two about vertex editing, by the way), could someone recommend me a program and a tutorial too? Seriously, the landscapes are freaking awesome. Please? Appreciate it!  [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]

This is actually my first post, literally, i've never posted on any Forum. xD

There's some limited terrain generation in the editor but really good terrain requires you learning something new. I hear your reluctance to do that but understand that it's just part of the process. It's like wanting to make maps then quickly finding out you need to learn photoshop so you can have control of your own textures.

Thanks for the reply, gopostal. And yeah, i'm a little bit frustrated of trying to use the Terrain editor which Unrealed offers, i've actually used it to practice and learn something but... Well... I'm anxious for the real thing, then i keep making stupid mistakes and that's frustrating. But i'll keep trying and i'll try to be patient, hehe.

Most people use TerraEdit which allows them to do, with more ease and speed, what the terrible UEd 1.0 terrain editor allowed them to do.

The terrains in the game itself were probably made from scratch in another software and then imported as brushes, that's where you use Blender and such.

You could also use very big brushes and then make a huge intersection of everything, if you aim is to have terrains in the style of stock Unreal maps.

Finally, there's the terrain editing tool. Bot_40 had a great tutorial which can be read here.

HellKeeper, Oooooooooooh i didn't know about the 3D vertex editing by holding alt plus both mouse buttons. I feel dumb :P. Bot_40's tutorial is a soul savior, it'll come in handy for sure. Also, i've downloaded TerraEdit to try it out, much better than the old man Unrealed 1.0's terrain editor, it gives me one helluva' perspective of what i am doing. I'm aware of this "technique" of importing brushes from other programs like Terraedit, i didn't try using Blender though, yet. It'll require some time and effort to learn.

Thanks! ^^

There are also more BrushBuilders that you can install into UEd

I remember I got PolyEd a long time ago from Sidewinder. I even wrote a small tutorial for it. I deleted it after a few years, because it seemed superfluous since it had never been released.
A few weeks later, after years of inactivity, Sidewinder came out of his retirement and released a public version of PolyEd. Never in my life did I feel so dumb. :P
