Problem with XbpFX package

Post by David_OSU »

The blueplasma texture in the XbpFX package of UT_S3TC_High_End_Package_01 appears to be broken.  This texture is rarely used, however, so it won't be a problem for most maps.  However, out of the 200+ UT MP maps and 300+ UT SP maps I have, it is used in the following:

DOM-MetalDream.unr
RA-Clawfist.unr
RA-OutWorld.unr

CutsceneforMorene.unr
NP13DrPest.unr
SPF-Aeryopolis.spf

Loading up any of these maps in UT with the S3TC High End version of XbpFX will cause UT to crash.  The first 3 are multiplayer maps, the last three are single player maps from Morene, Operation Na Pali, and Spatial Fear.  Crashing in the middle of ONP or Spatial Fear can be pretty annoying.

An easy fix for Spatial Fear is to copy the old XbpFX (original low res or UT CD2 S3TC) to the Textures folder within the Spatial Fear folder.  The only way to play ONP right now is to use the old XbpFX texture.

Today I'll download the Low End version of XbpFX to see if it also has a corrupted blueplasma texture.

Yes, this is known and that's why the package is only included in the website, not the mass download archive.

100 % correct :)

Unfortunatelly the bluplasma texture is corrupt and will indeed likelly chrash your game if the texture is used in a map you want to play. And next to all downloads there is a warning that this is the case like on this page: XbpFX. And for that same reason i left it out the downloads from the MasterFiles to prevent unwanted errors.

There is also no difference between the High End or Low End packages, since the error is caused by the Mergertool i use to create them. But its a real pitty because theres some very important and cool textures in that package ...............

For that reason i left it in the downloads with a remark: USE IS AT OWN RISK !!!

And if you have it installed, and you are about to play a match, replace it with the normal package upfront. You after all dont wanna risk a crash in the middle of an important match.

It was included in the UT_S3TC_Hi_End_Texture_Package_01.zip file that I downloaded on 12/24/08.  I don't think it was included in the previous version of the package.

Sorry, I forgot about that note in the individual downloads list.

I thought it was included in the UT_S3TC_Hi_End_Package_01.zip I recently downloaded, but I may have added it into my zip archive at a later time.

I did remember something about a warning on this texture, so the first time it crashed a map (in the Spatial Fear mod), I traced the problem down very quickly.

I like the updated textures in XbpFX, so I'm using it.  There really are very few maps that use the blueplasma texture.

Any idea why the Mergertool corrupts this texture?

Just to make sure i didnt made an error i checked the packages, and you are correct  :-[

UT_S3TC_Hi_End_Texture_Package_01.zip

and

UT_S3TC_Low_End_Texture_Package_01.zip

does contain a copy of XbpFX package.......

As it is i am re-uploading those MasterFiles again without the XbpFX package. The other thing i noticed is, that its an old version from XbpFX. So i case you are using the oné from the MasterFiles i suggest you download the single file to make sure you got the latest version.

But its a bad error on my part alright because people will encounter the error now, not knowing whats going on :( .....

And the links to the single packages:

HighEnd_XbpFX.zip

As said, use of this package is entirelly at your own risk !

Yep

And to be exact, its this oné:

FireTextures can't be exported/imported regularly, however there might be a workaround. Send me affected utx files/source files{dont think i'll need it} and the missing fire textures and i'll see if I can fix it. PM me links or email me them

Could you post that in a seperate tread ?

Not sure if this was a reply to the XbpFX package, but in case it was, nothing can be fixed there, its a limitation that the current Mergertool seems to have. And any editing on the package will render it useless due to net incompatability.

thats the workaround im talking about, ucc conform works on all unreal packages, and it also allows additional informatoin, i was going to create a class that imports the firetextures from the original package with the new s3tc textures and conform it, which would more or less be identical to what the merger tool does..

In any case, it's worth a shot

I was always under the impression that if you use ucc to create a package it will assign a new GUID to it. For new packages this is not a problem, but for excisting package it is of course. But if you wanna go for i am the last to say anything about it.

Basically i can only offer the original utx file and the high resolutions that are "broke":

Original file
Normal XbpFX.zip

The broken versions
LowEnd_XbpFX.zip
HighEnd_XbpFX.zip

Its btw still a mystery why they get broken, the Mergertool bypasses all textures in a package that doesnt need an update. And in this case the blueplasma texture is not updated, and should not have been processed and remain the same as the original. To me this tells me, something else in the package might be affected which in turn affects the procedural textures in it. All together its strange to begin with....

You gotta give me some time, cause i have to gather those files. But assembling a package in the editor with those files, i dunno, if corect the editor cannot handle those(dds format), and you will have to add the correct DrawScale by hand for each file. Thats alot of work even if it works.

BluePlasma is an ice texture apparently.. maybe thats the issue, but anyway..

http://www.klankaos.com/HighEnd_XbpFX.zip
http://www.klankaos.com/LowEnd_XbpFX.zip

warning : this file should contain 1 more export of which I don't know how to remove atm, an anticheat may pick this up and kick you for it, the previous use at your own risk obviously applies still.. :p

Though I have no idea who would kick for a texture package being off by a single export..

Re: Problem with XbpFX package

I downloaded the files, and i tested it in DOM-MetalDream, and i asume the simulated Aurora Borealis is the blueplasma texture involved and it does show up, neither did i chrash. So from that point seeing it seems fixed alright.

I tried to go online on a server that was running CTF-Face and i was able to enter the server. It didnt give me a version mismatch, so that part seems succesfull as well :)

But i did get kicked, and that might be due to the anticheat. I guess the only way to be sure is to have me offer the file to the UT community and have it tested by several people.

They probably can tell real fast whats working and what not, after all i am an Unreal guy and not a UT guy and know little to nothing about anticheat stuff or UT.

But in all honesty, at first glance it indeed seems to work :) , and i am curious what exactly you did ?

Load original texture in unrealed > make map > make this actor in MyLevel, place in map

Code: Select all

class MyActor expands Actor;

function F()
{
      Local Texture T;
      //T=Texture'blueplasma';
      T=Texture'detailrock1';
      T=Texture'DwallBluex';
      T=Texture'dwallredx';
      T=Texture'flarenoxx';
      T=Texture'gstripez';
      T=Texture'Inoxbtn1';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip1';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip2';
      T=Texture'InoxPip3';
      T=Texture'InoxPip5';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip51';
      T=Texture'inxb1';
      T=Texture'inxb2';
      T=Texture'inxb3';
      T=Texture'inxb4';
      T=Texture'inxb5';
      T=Texture'inxb6';
      T=Texture'inxb7';
      T=Texture'inxb8';
      T=Texture'inxctf';
      T=Texture'inxgrid';
      T=Texture'inxmars0';
      T=Texture'inxmars1';
      T=Texture'inxmars2';
      T=Texture'inxmars3';
      T=Texture'inxmars4';
      T=Texture'inxpal';
      T=Texture'inxrust9';
      T=Texture'inxs1';
      T=Texture'inxs2';
      T=Texture'inxs3';
      T=Texture'inxs4';
      T=Texture'inxspc1';
      T=Texture'inxspc2';
      T=Texture'inxspc3';
      T=Texture'inxspc4';
      T=Texture'InxVrac1';
      T=Texture'inxwl3';
      T=Texture'Nebula1';
      T=Texture'Nebula2';
      T=Texture'Nitrowaves';
      T=Texture'NoxStar';
      T=Texture'Paint11';
      T=Texture'rInxFlr1';
      T=Texture'rstripez';
      T=Texture'smok1';
      T=Texture'wacka33';
      T=Texture'ystripez';//48/49
}
save map, close unrealed, rename xbpfx.utx , replace with s3tc version.. reload map, open unrealed log, enter in "obj savepackage package=xbpfx file=xbpfxlowendminusblueplasma.u"

then I did the same with high end, and I did something similar to get only the blueplasma.. comment the rest of those out and only get blueplasma, savepackage as file=blueplasma.u..

then how I combined them again

Code: Select all

Class XbpFXtex extends Object;

//Fix for Diehard.. :p

#exec OBJ LOAD FILE=..\225fsystem\BluePlasmaExport.u package=XBpFX
#exec OBJ LOAD FILE=..\225fsystem\HighEndXbpFXNoBluePlasma.u package=XBpFX

Function ReferenceEverything()
{
      Local Texture T;
      T=Texture'BluePlasma';
      T=Texture'detailrock1';
      T=Texture'DwallBluex';
      T=Texture'dwallredx';
      T=Texture'flarenoxx';
      T=Texture'gstripez';
      T=Texture'Inoxbtn1';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip1';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip2';
      T=Texture'InoxPip3';
      T=Texture'InoxPip5';
      T=Texture'Inoxpip51';
      T=Texture'inxb1';
      T=Texture'inxb2';
      T=Texture'inxb3';
      T=Texture'inxb4';
      T=Texture'inxb5';
      T=Texture'inxb6';
      T=Texture'inxb7';
      T=Texture'inxb8';
      T=Texture'inxctf';
      T=Texture'inxgrid';
      T=Texture'inxmars0';
      T=Texture'inxmars1';
      T=Texture'inxmars2';
      T=Texture'inxmars3';
      T=Texture'inxmars4';
      T=Texture'inxpal';
      T=Texture'inxrust9';
      T=Texture'inxs1';
      T=Texture'inxs2';
      T=Texture'inxs3';
      T=Texture'inxs4';
      T=Texture'inxspc1';
      T=Texture'inxspc2';
      T=Texture'inxspc3';
      T=Texture'inxspc4';
      T=Texture'InxVrac1';
      T=Texture'inxwl3';
      T=Texture'Nebula1';
      T=Texture'Nebula2';
      T=Texture'Nitrowaves';
      T=Texture'NoxStar';
      T=Texture'Paint11';
      T=Texture'rInxFlr1';
      T=Texture'rstripez';
      T=Texture'smok1';
      T=Texture'wacka33';
      T=Texture'ystripez';
}
DefaultProperties
{
}
oh, and then I used ucc conform to the previous texture

But since it has an improper amount of exports i'll try one more time for you using the first method

Oh i believe i found the problem with the new amount of exports. Imports is identical. I made that in 225f instead of UT, its likely it uses some palettes from UT that aren't in unreal, so it creates them instead of re-using them..

The Mergertool broke his neck over a few other packages as well in the past and they all had to be withdrawn from the downloads, and those are:

HubEffects
TCrystal

DieHard SCWS,

I looked at all three of these texture files to see if there was a common problem here.  In all three, the first texture is an animated texture (FireTexture, WetTexture, or IceTexture?).  In other hi-res S3TC texture packages with working animated textures (such as SpaceFX), the first texture is not an animated texture.

Maybe this will help towards a work-around for this problem.

For now, I'm going to try the fixed XbpFX textures that Casey posted.

Funny, because in the Texture Database on Unreal Texture, it is listed as type "Texture", a normal texture.  Either the database is wrong, or the type is not identified correctly in the original package.

Edit:  it appears that all of the animated textures in XbpFX are identified in the database as type "Texture" instead of the correct type.  Must be a problem with the database.
but anyway..

Thanks so much for posting these!  I can't wait to try them out (and I really don't care if they are online compatible anyway).
