What S3TC to choose?

Post by GreatEmerald »

I was wondering which version of S3TC textures is the best now. I have recently added S3TC support to my UTGOTY and now I have 3 choices:
1. Use the 2nd CD of UTGOTY
2. Use the ones from URP
3. Wait for UTRP

Which option should I choose? Please note that I DO want to create maps.

About creating maps: I can recommend creating a separate Unreal install for development (with default textures) and a separate one for playing (With S3TC textures)

Not Unreal, I use UTGOTY only (even if I create maps for Unreal - lol!)

I have thought about that, it might be wise to have an install of my ol' UGold for 227 and mapping. But that takes quite a lot of hard drive space (laptops don't have much :-/ ).

In general its disadviced to use the S3TC textures for creating maps and/or servers, and this goes for Unreal and UT as well. They should only be used for playing on client side!

If you use them for Unreal, you have to use the S3TC textures made for Unreal. The Unreal textures should never be used for UT!

UT same story but vice versa:

If you use them for UT, you have to use the S3TC textures for UT. The UT textures should never be used for Unreal!

Both Unreal and UT textures are offered in 2 qualities, the Low End textures and the High End textures. Both the Unreal and UT textures are 100% netcompatible.

There are however a few problems with UT, the textures do pass PURE anti cheat just fine, other anti cheats are being tested. The main problem with the UT textures is the so called gliding/skating player glitch. For the new packages there is no actual solution, and work is in progress to see how it can be fixed.

You can try the current  anti skating fix, but it does only handle the packages from the 2nd UT disk and not the new from scratch released texture packages. Than again, the new packages may not be vonurable to the glitch.

As far as i can see the glitch is caused when in a normal package a texture is added in true color instead of the proper index colored picture. If that package is turned into an S3TC version than the glitch will surface during online playing, but ONLY if that specific texture is being used on the map you are playing in. Which means if you play a map that makes use of the package, but not the corrupt texture all is fine.

At this moment i have no clue which packages and what textures in all the packages for UT are effected. All together its a difficult problem and difficult to fix. And anyone that can create a fix for it is welcome to do so.

To get the best downloads for the S3TC textures you should go to www.unrealtexture.com That site is specifically created for all the S3TC projects. At this moment the clock is still counting backwards before the UT section is fully functional. You can already download all the needed textures for UT, but pages may be incomplete and sometimes blind links or missing button, pictures can occur.

If all goes well the site will be fully functional, including installation tutorials for the S3TC textures for UT when the countdown reaches 0. Upcomming monday i wil go through the entire UT site and see if i need to set the clock a bit ahead in the future (which is what i am already concidering seeing the amount of work left......)

When the site is being released for UT than i will also release a bunch of extra updates for UT specific textures as a surprice, well kinda lol.

Those textures will also be released for Unreal within a couple of months in a new project for Unreal that will go deal with all version (mismatches) from all textures ported from UT to Unreal. Hopefully that project will end all 10.000 + differerent ports and mismatches from UT  >:(

And i would agree 100% with that on Hyper.nl :)

After all, the installation for an extra mapping UT or Unreal only takes a 300-500 mb Compared to an S3TC installation its not too much lol. But i can understand it alright, i have space problems too :)

I couldn't imagine why anyone would use S3TC textures to map in the editor. The fact is, when you load up the S3TC packages in the editor, because of the high resolution, they are all fuzzy and almost impossible to tell what texture it really is.

As i expected, the amount of work on the site is too much to be able to have it all done on the current deadline.

Which ment i just pusched the deadline further away to March 15, and i cincerelly hope i will be able to have it all done by than.

It does however mean that the anti mismatch project  ::) will see its daylight earlyer as planned. And its likelly it will be done before the UT site opens, since the one depends on the other.
