Problem: can't play-test my levels

Post by Candee_Sweet »

So I was adding things to my level, and rebuilding, etc.

Then I wanted to test my level, so I go to file and click "play level".

But then I get the following error:

Failed to enter Autoplay.unr: Can't find file 'Autoplay.unr'

History: UGameEngine::Init

is unreal in a long directory ?

c:\documents and settings\administrator\desktop\unreal\maps

is too long for unreal to parse, if so, you should put it in something shorter like c:\games\unreal

It was in C:\UnrealGold at first, and then I tried C:\Program Files\UnrealGold when I reinstalled to fix it. I still have the same problem.

Also, I tried to open the level by double clicking on it, but then the computer asks me what I want to open it with... which is odd, because .unr files should open with unreal or its autoplay, right?

I'm not sure why this is happening...

Tried opening them with autoplay.exe. That does nothing to help at all.

Also tried to select unreal.exe as an option for opening the file, but the whole "choose a program" list won't let me add that to the list...

even autoplay.unr won't open when I double click on it in the maps folder...

There should be no autoplay.exe and you should be able to choose unreal.exe anyway, just look under it for more programs or browse...

@Leo,

I reinstalled and now there is no autoplay.exe.

But the problem is that when I try to add unreal.exe to the list of programs, it still does not show up on the list. I tried to add unreal.exe to the list by right-clicking the .unr file of my choice and looking at the "Properties", and also by choosing "open with...", and still, the list refuses to include unreal.exe. Not only is this happening with the maps I've made, but this is now happening with all the maps original to the game on my computer.

Also, someone on the Newbies Co-Op suggeted that it might be a registry key missing... but I thought registry keys had to do with Unreal Ed start-up problems? If that does have anything to do with it, what files should I look for?

And would a program like Iolo's System Mechanic cause some kind of interference in this area? I know I wasn't having the problems before I started using it.

Also, before I forget, should Unreal Gold be installed in the Program Files folder, or is it fine just sitting in C-drive? When I look under Recommended Programs, I only see Adobe Reader there, followed by a second list called Other Programs. Unreal is not in either one of these lists whenever I look.

unreal can function without reg keys, but I always keep it in its default location of

c:\unreal
or
c:\unrealgold

I'm not sure if that matters.

Also, the maps I'm trying to create are saved to an external hard drive inside a generic plug&play usb enclosure.

There are several computers in my house. One desktop runs on Windows 2000. The other desktop is XP SP2 or SP3. My old laptop is 2000, and my newer one is XP SP3. I tried to play-test or test-play the on th first desktop I mentioned to see if I'd encounter the same problem. Works fine on the desktop computer... and it worked fine on my old laptop... I have yet to test it on the XP desktop... but why it won't work on my new laptop, I don't know. :'(

Now there is a new problem... I tried to test/play my map by selecting play level from the file menu. Now the editor is able to find autoplay, I guess... but when the viewport opens, I'm at the start of The Sunspire level instead of the start of my own map.

I think I may have done something very wrong... When I tried to see if any of the regular maps would open up in Unreal Gold after I reinstalled it. I opened The Sunspire in Unreal Ed to see if I could get autoplay to work... It worked, but when I open my own map, I end up at the start of Sunspire. Maybe I shouldn't have done that...

Maybe if I posted the log contents, or copied and pasted them somewhere, the problem could be spotted within the contents? :-/

What's weird is why doesn't UEd automatically replace it with the current map like it should...

I posted one of the logs for when I tried to test/play a map that wasn't one of the regular maps. It's on pastebin.com.

I reinstalled yet again. I'm going to see if I'll have this problem again on my computer after I return home later.

Hi :)

I know this topic is already older, but I just had the same problem. I wasn't able to testplay a map from within the editor. I got the same error as Candee did.
First some informations. I'm working on a test computer. I installed a copy of Unreal from my main computer on it and all worked well so far. Some months ago I also installed UnrealGold to testplay some maps which were made with Gold.
Today I wanted to test some changes in a map with my Unreal editor (not the Gold one) and got that error.
The editor kept telling me, that Autoplay.unr couldn't be found. Well, Autoplay.unr was in the maps folder and I even could start it directly with Unreal. So I searched for a solution and found this topic.
The editor saved the map to the right folder and created the correct Autoplay.unr, but for some strange reason it searched in the wrong directory for the file. Guess where, it looked in the UnrealGold maps folder for the file. I'd copied the Autoplay.unr to the Gold maps folder and the map really started, but not with Unreal but with Gold. That's crazy, I opened the map with the normal Unreal editor and it started the map with Gold. After it I deinstalled this crappy Gold and now all works normal again. I still wonder, how this mismatch between the two installations could have happened. I always was told, that it's possible to run several Unreal installations on one computer without any problems.

The last install of Unreal you installed to the computer will become the 'Dominant' version and since by default, Unreal looks at the registry to find the autoplay.unr to find it, will use that instead of anything else. However if no registry entry is found, Unreal will goto its local folder by default (I know crappy way it was programmed, its both in Unreal Ed 1 and 2) I think smirf should change this behavior in 227i.

hu, someone calling my name? :)

Can't remember changing it, but UED2.1 seems to be fine?
Log: Moving '..\Maps\Save.tmp' to '..\Maps\Autoplay.unr'
Log: LaunchURL Unreal.exe Autoplay.unr HWND=460632 -log

Anyway, without having a working UED1 on my new install yet, I'd rather say it is starting the wrong Unreal and that will of course dig in its own map folder(s)...
