The use of Prefabs - Quick notes #1

This is just a real quick hint for using Prefabs. Let's say you want to use a "fancy table" you like in another map, or a prefab you see posted on a website. You import it into your map ... but it's got the "generic" texture !!

Hint 1: Look at the UEd browser and figure out which textures are used on it.

Hint 2: Create a "box" off to the side in your map, texture it with the ones used by the Prefab and "rebuild" the map.

Hint 3: When you import the Prefab always DO NOT merge the polys !!

Now the Prefab should be exactly the way it was in the map you "stole" it from. Also, this is useful to know because it's best to make your Prefab in a seperate map. I have a "level" I've named DmPrefabs ... with a player start and lighting. I keep all the stuff I make in there ... it's almost like a museum now - LoL.

I'll continue this stuff - I'll use a ladder as an example.

Merging polys can be a good thing. I don't use alot of prefabs other than some UT meshes ( not a prefab) , but I don't know of any other way to merge a brush in ed 1.

I guess I shoulda explained that better ...

When you are "importing" a pre-textured prefab, checking the "merge polys" option tends to shift the textures of the prefab ... so to keep the textures intact I've found it best to NOT check the "merge."

I use prefabs alot because I build my "items" in a seperate level and "import" them to the level I'm making.

But I think I do things "wierd" as compared to others.

I use 'prefabs' all the time, except that i know them simply as 'custom brushes.' I have some maps solely for prefabs too (i find it extremely useful to have all the letters of the alphabet to import into my maps).

Here is one i made some time ago, which i 'showcased' at the TCP forum:

http://www.tcpclan.degroenepulk.nl/phpforum/viewtopic.php?t=821&start=0

Scroll down near the bottom.
As much as i try, i cannot seem to think of an interesting and amusing signature...I blame the stupid fools who stole all my ideas for decent signatures...

Fools...

I'll get you some day!
