Interesting textures

Post by Hyper »

It looks like this mod uses a new sort of re-created high-res textures. Is this something of interest for the Unreal ReTexturing project???

From that screenshot they look damn cool.

And the answer could be yes, i have had a e-mail conversation with Hourences from Epic about the HourIceSkaarj_utx package he had made in the past (the one used in one of BeWilderBeasts maps)

He did tell me he was working on a SP mod project for UT. Not just that, he was speciffically making them in S3TC versions.

It could very well be that these are results from those :o

And it looks like he made some textures already in Unreal in S3TC versions. In that case damn yeah, this could be very, very interesting :)

And yeah, he is very good, tons better than i will ever be............ Theres one thing he can do which i can't :( And thats freehand drawing, and this speciffically is very important to create decayed textures, as seen in Unreal......................

I friggen wish i could do that..............

I would not mind it at all, if you would go ask on those forums for more specifics Hyper, are those S3TC textures, and where do they come from.

Incoming message from Vampirus:
I not use UT2004 textures almost. Only from original ST3C(AncientNew.utx) and a few made myself (VampirusTextures.utx)
When you port textures from ST3C to UT2004 don't forget set detail textures for every texture.
I know about ReTexturing project - but not find any new textures in Ancient.utx from there. You can use my textures in Unreal ReTexturing project.

But you are here now, welcome on the OldUnreal forums :)

The textures you made yourself, what size did you draw them, and could you make a few of them available for download (preferably as TIFF or PSD file) so i can have a look at them.

I upload two psd files here:
http://unrealremix.nm.ru/files/basicrok.rar
http://unrealremix.nm.ru/files/hyro.rar

Later I uploud another
I draw all textures in 1024x1024. If you draw textures bigger and reduse it later,
the quality of image become worse. Make textures in high resolutions only if you draw
them fully by hand.

Sorry i didn't gave a reply more sooner.

Its an interesting interpretation you made from the signs you made in hyro texture. Looks definatelly cool. The background of that one looks very familiar to me, is it an recycled Unreal texture, or does it originate from elsewhere.

As far as worksize, i now have made some 3000 plus High Resolution textures, i still concider a startsize from 2048 the optimum. Especially for base materials that needs to be scaled different in other textures. Another reason is, you need real deep detail for some textures which you can only acomplisch with very high resolution, the biggest base i used so far is 16192 pixels x 16192 pixels, and i have had several in 8192 and 4096.

The gate i made is in 8192 to be able to add detail, the background was created in 16192

Heres the full texture, but be warned this is a monster one, loading could take a while..

But !

I agree that resampling any texture is bad like you said, no disagrement there :) But often its not possible............

That's a very cool texture, Diehard. I would have no idea how to make something like that in photoshop. I can see why you made it in 8192. It still looks pretty good in 2048 though.

Scaling it down to 2048 will make it loose quality a bit, but theres no other way to add detail like that without having a larger basefile. After scaling down, the thin lines in the background will still be visible, but could never be created in that scaled down size.

At this moment we are still working on the map, and it will take at least another 3 months i am afraid before its done.

At this moment some 693 new textures have been added to the current 4 different texture packages. Thats including several animations (theres one 198 frame animation among them)

I estimate that the plain textures have been done for 80 - 85 %. The Animated textures i dunno, difficult to get an overview on those. But i know there needs to be done another 198 frame animation which is the same as the other one, except this on is on a CRT monitor, while the one that is done is an LCD monitor.

The biggest animation however is 300 frames :) And that one i still need to do........ aaaarg, Though its not a complicated one, but alotta repeating, anoying work.

From this point, the map is unfinished, theres still a bunch of rooms that have not been done yet, and BSP trouble is getting more and more a problem (which we already anticipated from start would go happen), but ill trust on Chris his editing skills :) .

After its done, we need to test on gameplay, and check if theres missing or wrong things.

All together the result will be a whole bunch of new normal/S3TC ptexture packages, and the sizes by defination have been taken to the absolue max in this map, which is worrying me, though thusfar no-one in the tests did have any videolag. Still it worries me.

I try to concentrate on one thing at the time, because if i start thinking about what all needs to be done, i am getting a severe headache lol  :o

Lol, in some respect its not that far from the truth :)

The four S3TC texture packages combined at this specific moment are 306 Mb big  ;) While the normal versions combined are 12 Mb, which is big too, but i think a fair size seeing the content.

At this moment i estimate that the total S3TC will be between 450 and 550 Mb. So its far from 700 mb, but heck, as said in some respect it does come close alright.

Heres two screenies :)

http://www.celticwarriors.net/SGC/Pipejunction.jpg

http://www.celticwarriors.net/SGC/SomeElectra.jpg

Neither will be final, the pipes will have more different looks, same for the wall, the electra is partially done.

LOL, over 500 MB?! The texture packages @ Celtic Warriors alone weigh 700+ MB PACKED, and it's the entire Unreal game... Dude, we're talking single map here. That will be awesome!

While working on the map, i decided to make the packages self supporting, which means i am addding alot of textures that will not show up in the map, but make it possible for mappers to go create new maps with it.

If it wouldn't have been for that, the size would be half of it what it is now. So i took future new maps in account :) But as said, the other reason for the size is that those textures by definition are taken to the absolute max.

As long as your host can hold it, there is for me no problem with huge files, even if I need to buy a 512 MB GeForce card for it. S3TC rocks. Period.

I have been working on the SGC textures till the Football Worldcup. I did make the second from the 3 hugh animations, so 2 out of 3 are done. Still means i have to do the biggest one (300 frames).

I also made some general stuff for the map, but as said i stopped working on the SGC map till the worldcup is over, because Chris won't be doing anything either lol.

So i am working fully on the URProject itself, mainly the SkyCity and the NaliCast package. If i am done with those and release the results i will return to the SGC project again. Which is about 85 % done as far as textures.

Tons lol

I have no idea, i am just working through it, bit by bit.

I try to devide my attention to various sections. One moment i try to do the textures for people who like spaceships and techstuff, other moments ill work on those that like the castle like stuff.

Or i try to finish a certain map, just to set a goal. Like Sinfonia and Deck16, or like now ill try to finish up SkyTown.

Cool, I can't wait to see the new packages!

And there will be alot of changes :)

I also managed to make new grass, i have been preparing grass sections in miles around my house in the last months, which resulted in one good photo.

It means the grass will go back to the roots as can be seen in the original textures.

The grass i have now is desert dry grass with green and brown spots, its also short upstanding grass instead of the current one. Apart from that i managed to take out most of repeating paterns without making it fuzzy.

- Short, standing, non fuzzy, dry grass.

instead of:

- Too long, lying down, wet and fuzzy grass.

Unless i will ever get a better camera wich enables me to make photos of larger sections, than i asume this will be the final grass. But prepare for a big change Hyper :) And as said i am trying to almost complete the SkyCity package, which should result in a finished SkyTown (the white tower looks cool already  8-) ) , among other maps.......

Again for the grass, the delay on that side only lies in the fact i need find the closest colors for the 3 base variations. Which seems very difficult on these new textures..... I am also working on all the wood in the SkyCity and NaliCast packages, again its very difficult to uptain decent photos from wood. And especcially my camera just plain sucks :( Which makes it very hard to make decent photos even if i find the correct wood.

I had planned to do only a bunch of updates, but as it looks now it probably will be the largest update ever, not so much in filesize but in finalizing beta textures or redoing textures to better quality or matching textures.

But theres also tons of brandnew ones inthere :)
