Are we organised?

Post by MarkDavidoff »

Is this re-texturing project organised?

Do we have specific people that are assigned jobs/textures to to. Multiple people could be working on the same one!

I think we should be more organised with this. It would be nice for a download page where we could post the finished textures

No...i am not a neat-freak :)

I just like my unreal...

Also, while Im at it...does anyone have edstgen.dll? Mine is missing when I try to run OpenGL, so I cant enjoy the S3TC textures :(

I don't have that file, and I can't find it at Google. You might want to try to get a fresh driver pack for your graphics card.

No...its not for my graphics card...It gives the same error on my other computer, which has an integrated graphics chip. I think its something to do with the OpenGL Plugin, the unreal installation or my windows installation.

If you can help, please try. I downloaded the lastest version of oldunreal's patch. BTW...the problem occurs on the other computer which doesn't have to the patch...so its not the patch's problem.

I just found the website for the database of the texture files. I suggest we all use it. It worries me that it hasn't been updated in a long time though:

I am also concerned about the activity of this forum. It doesn't seem very active.

Hi Xebozone welcome to the Old Unreal forums.

As for your original question about the organisation.

Basically i work on my own at the textures, though Ahaigh does work also on the some packages. Aside that, Smirftsch does the OpenGl department while Kerilk is responsible for the Mergertool(s)

I already found out when Turboman wanted to join the project, it is very difficult to get everything on one line, and the main reason for that is, that the packages are interlinked.

If you take the SkyCity package than theres several other packages that link to that package:

GenEarth
GenTerra
NaliCast
NaliFX

In those packages theres a bunch of bases used to create the package, which means you need to create the base for the packages before you can proceed making the rest of the textures.

If there would now be 3 people working on those packages than each still has to wait till the other has finished his base before proceding with the actual textures. Also exchanging the textures between the persons working on them is very difficult to do mainly because of the texture sizes. On averidge each texture is aprox 60 Mb while its being created. 10 textures is 600 Megabyte, 100 textures is 6 Gigabyte...............

The packages mentioned are some 600 - 800 textures big.......... you do the math lol

If those people would see eachother in real life, than it already would be difficult, let alone through the net. Than theres also the problem that each painter uses their own techniques to make the textures, which makes it very difficult to mix the work. And the shitty part, well i could use alot of hands lol, but having more people on the job needs losing time to guide them, more time than i have :( So yeah its pretty uncool, and i wish i knew a way how to properly deal with it :(

As for the site you mentioned, it indeed is horribly outdated, at least for a big part. The website needs to be re-done completelly, but having there some 2300 pages containing in total some 19,799 files its a hugh job. I am working on a new design that will also make maintaining the site alot more easy, ....hopefully ::)

As for the work on the textures themselves, this goes on 24 hours a day and has never stopped :)

In the past 5 months i have been working on the SGC project that will have close to a thousend (if not more...) brandnew textures for Unreal in both normal size and S3TC size.

So far the packages are:

S3_SCG_Electra.utx 120 Mb
S3_SCG_ElectraAni01.utx 13 Mb
S3_SGC_CRT_UnrealFlyby 35 Mb
S3_SGC_LCD_UnrealFlyby 35 Mb
S3_SGC_Stargate.utx 182 Mb

Makes the current total 385 Mb if brandnew textures :)

But than theres the Worldcup Football (Holland was kicked out :( ) And since Chris (From the UK and still in  >:( ) (who does the mapbuilding) is on hold, i decided to go work on the URProject itself in the meantime.

I already created some 8 gigabyte (as in worksize) of new textures in the past week and a half, which means theres a bunch of updates comming up in the comming weeks.

The packages that will have updates basically are the same as mentioned above:

SkyCity.utx
GenEarth.utx
GenTerra.utx
NaliCast.utx
NaliFX.utx
Crypt.utx

And some other packages:

cytizen.utx
hourindusx.utx (could become a raincheck)
hourpitores.utx (could become a raincheck)

Decals.utx for the 227 patch (which at least could be used for testing purposes)

In general the textures are released in waves, as Hyper.nl can confirm :) If theres no release for months it does not mean at all the project is on hold :)

On the topic of decals...I remember when I got my first computer with an actual graphics card (Nvidia TNT2). A friend of mine gave me UnrealGold. I was able to run the game on the Glide renderer on my card. I don't know if this was because of a glide wrapper, or becuase my card supported glide...but I'll get to the point.

Decals worked for me. Shooting an enemy would leave blood stains on the floors and on crates, walls and anything else the gibs bounced off.
I also hear about real-time shadows that were taken out.... I think those were visable too. I can't actually remember, I was about 8 years old...they may not be...BUT...Im sure that the decals were there.

When I got my newer graphics card, the decals went away. I still have that old TNT2...but its in my cousins computer...and I cant test Unreal there...

Just thought that would be interesting.

Finally, Does anyone have that DLL file on their computer that I mentioned earlier in the beginning of this post?

Do you mean what i wrote in this post ?

Though its new to me that Decals also are possible with that card and patch  :o

I did a search for the dll you are looking for, and its not on my computer. Google gave zero results, which is rare lol. It could not even present oné link.

I agree with Hyper.nl try (re) install your video drivers, and download them newly so your sure you got the latest version and to make sure the one you had did not get corrupted during download.

If that wont help, maybe reinstall the whole computer and see if it solves the problem....

Yeah, that wont work. The same problem occurs on two computers with different graphics systems. One is an Nvidia card, and one is an SiS Integrated Chip...which even skips when playing unreal. In fact, it was a "downgrade" from my TNT2. I shouldn't have let someone else 'upgrade' my computer...but then again, I was in yr 5...and my parents didnt trust me :P

About that link that you sent...I have some GREAT news for you that may help!
for the shadows- it was a creative implementation for their TNT2 card, and the implementation is crap full of bugs and not very precise. Shambler made some tests himself, maybe he will be able to build in a better and really working solution...
This was my card!!! The creative TNT2!!! And what's better...I still have the DRIVERS on CD!!! (and the CARD) (in my cousings computer however))!

And...my friend has the Demo of unreal that came with Soundblaster Live! On CD, if that will help...but that wasnt the version I tried anyways...But, with this card and those drivers, and a copy of UnrealGold...I can confirm that decals did work, and I think those shadows worked too...And I played on Glide mode...maybe becuase I had a glide wrapper, but maybe not...I cant rememer.

Hope I can help!
