Strange!!!

Post by Krull »

Hi guys

I think there is something strange with the new s3tc Textures ecause I can see them also with 3dfx D3D and SoftwareRendering.
So I can take a look @ this textures in the unrealED :)

Is this a bug or was that planed?

For the heck of it, i tried it, but it wont work for me.........

Maybe post here in detail what installation, settings, patches, updates you have. Since this offically is not possible, its could be very, very interesting if we could repeat what you did. Theres alotta people NOT using S3TC because you cannot run it in D3D  :-/

And i did not have time to go investigate on this, but i did found something else weird a while back. The S3 TechDemo that surfaced, does have interesting texture packages, which was said before is impossible.

UT package work the same, they both contain normal and S3TC textures in one go. Seeing the S3 showmaps, this apearently DOES apply to Unreal too, unlike what has been told before.

I am also able to load those packages into the editor, and they indeed are full scale when opened in the editor.

The texture packages seem to be both normal and S3TC compatible, all in oné package.

Besides that all, i am not sure if building with S3TC is a smart thing  ::) You may want to test that reeeeeeeeeeeeeeal good before you go build and test this on a server before you ruin your work because of incompatabillity with normal and/or S3TC players.

Btw, that TechDemo contains some very cool stuff, S3TC users definatelly want to try that stuff themselves :) And since you can also view it with a normal Unreal, normal users can give it a try too.

Heres the downloadlink S3TechDemo

But yeah Krull, post all info on what you use, so we can see if someone is able to match it.

Im not sure how I did it!
I only installed Unreal 1.0. Then I patched it to the Version 224v.
after this I installed Smirfsch's OpenGlDrv2.1.0.6 Patch and Installed the new packages (01.01.2006), which I downladed here.

And I didn't change enything in the new Opengl preferences.

After installing that Textures I started Unreal but it starts in 3dfx and I wondered that I can see the s3tc Textures! the same thing in some other rendermode.

A prob is that the 3dfx rendermode can't show all s3tc Textures

I will show you some screenshots of that strange thing:

Link to the editor picture seems broke, but yeah it looks like your D3D is working correct alright :)

Maybe give also some info on your videocard and drivers :D

As said, i didn't dive into the S3 Techdemo yet, but that installer seems to have an build in S3TC support too.

D3D:

[glow=yellow,2,300]S3TechDemoD3D02[/glow]

Software Rendering:

[glow=yellow,2,300]S3TechDemoSoftware01[/glow]

So whatever is done, on your end, or on S3's end, it is possible somehow, maybe Smirftsch should have a look at the installer..........

K the link to the UnrealED picture must work now :)

I have a Radeon 9800 Pro and the Driverversion is "wxp-w2k-catalyst-8-082-041130a-019577c" this driver isn't actuel.
That driver was released at 29th december 2004.

Edit:

here is the s3tcTechdemo with 3dfx
s3tc with 3dfx

Few days back GOOGZ seems to have pulled off the same thing as you Krull, he too could run the textures in D3D just fine. His only problem was that he crashed upon login in a server online, biut was fine on each second attempt.

But after all he switched to OpenGL now, so its working flawless now.

But still, it seems its very well possible to run it under D3D, ah well it should be solved in the 227 patch i believe, D3D support.

Oh, you should not use the S3TC textures for mapping, mapping and running servers is done with the normal textures, just in case you didn't know..........

It's not a TechDemo - it's a MAP PACK! The maps show off the textures, and they are a technology demonstration purpose - but a techdemo would be an Unreal build (the entire game, with either only those levels or all of 'em). There are only maps and textures there, no drivers built in. I had no S3 effect unil I set the OpenGL options as instructed in the OMP manual.

After your remark i did think about it about the names i gave it in my post and downloads. Initally i thought you were correct, the purpose of the maps and textures were to give a demonstration on the Fall Comdex98 (if i am correct) to show what S3 was capable of doing with S3TC textures.

However, you already stated yourself on the BeyondUnreal forums that its part of a full game with additional maps containing the S3TC textures. It is however a new build ! The engine we speak of and everything else used to run that engine may have been a plain Unreal as it was at that moment.

But the new build in this case DOES apply to the used textures, those were at that moment brandnew top of the bill technology, and by definition a new build from the at that moment widely used 8 bit textures without any compression. Therefore i think the textures do represent a TechDemo.
There are only maps and textures there
And those textures are new technology, they are not ''just'' textures !

And sure, the pictures shown above are screenshots from the Demo maps, and indeed the mappack as you created it, is on itself only a mappack, but it was part of a TechDemo, which is why i decide to name them TechDemo material.

All together its a bit of both:

Unreal was a plain edition.
Maps were plain too.
Textures were new technology (and from textures point of view, a new build)

The techdemo is complete only if you combine:

- plain Unreal
- Unreal 219 Patch iI supplied or anything else that adds S3 support (e.g. OMP)
- and this map pack

and then you get the tech demo. Coz you don't see the special HiRes versions of the textures without the proper driver. LoRes versions are used instead.

Still, that doesn't make your judgement erratical. I'm convinced :)

Yeah, on my side i do have to archieve it in the downloads, in such a way it points to the correct origine.
