Is this project a copyright breach

Post by Smirftsch »

Question:

what about copyrights for texture packages. Currently a group of people are working on a retexturing project for Unreal, based on the original textures but highres. Is this a copyright breach of some kind ? Am i allowed to offer those packages for download @ oldunreal ?

To finaly clear this up i sent a mail to Joe Wilcox from Epic. I got this answer:

We have stated it's ok to us any of our content from any of the UT games
in any other UTGame so no it wouldn't be a copyright breach. It would
be to take those textures and use them in Doom/etc.

true, i remember once epic stated ALL content from any unreal game is allowed to be shared to other unreal games, hence why epic gave permission for the unreal2 creature, texture and model pack release for ut2004 a few months back.

Though as i always told you, i never really was worried about it. But it is still a very cool answer you got there.

I would highly appreciate it Smirftsch, if you could forward all mail you sent and got from Epic, about this subject for safe keeping on my side.

Does this mean you will go offer the textures now, because that would at least on a few points great.

Since the packages can also be made UT compatible, could you also host those files, i unfortunatelly lack both space and bandwidth to do so :(

Nor your, nor my site is ment for UT, but it would be a shame if UT could not benefit from this programm with all the work spent in it. My site is Unreal only, but if i had the space i would make an exception for it, at least till i find a full UT host.

In a recent mail from me to Kerilk i also mentioned another possibility, having 2 versions for one package, one for 32Mb to 128Mb videocard users and another package for 256Mb videocard users. This is currently not duable because of my own harddrivespace, but yeah futurewize it could be possible.

But for now i definatelly would like to find a host for the UT packages, in that case i would also ask if i can direct hotlink them from my site to you..............

But its for sure good news, and your effort is appreciated :)

Merger could still be improved :

- it could downsample textures on the fly, just by using a lower level of mipmap. (like limiting maximum texture size to a fixed value, or to half the current value for instance)
- it could generate UT package with, both compressed and origial textures.

For the moment, I would not be so sure of the compatibility with UT of the generated packages. There might have to be some fixes to have them all fully compatible. Not sure yet....

Late responce lol, but no clue what exactly you do mean.

In the meantime i did try the UT compatebillity, and thats a no go i am afraid.

It works flawless for Single player as fas as i could see, but online it will give a missmatch with the servers :-/

Btw, the memory leak is still there in the merger 8)

Its not like a disaster, i simply reboot my system after i am done working with it, gives me time for potty break and a cup of tea :)

I still would not mind it Smirftsch if you could forward that mail to me ::)
