CurvedSurfaces

CurvedSurfaces=True, this setting doesn't work as it did in the unpatched Unreal. Will this option be brought back ? 8-)

Apparently it was broken with the introduction of LOD meshes, what kind of a difference did it make anyway?

I'll see if the UT1 code works with it.

Nope, latest UT1 doesn't work with it either. (btw, how do you edit posts? I can't see an edit button)

Not a huge difference, but still nice to have the choice.

First pic without curvedSurfaces, second with.

editing works fine for me, have no explanation for that. For the curved surfaces, will have a look into it...

Hmz, I always wondered why CurvedSurfaces showed no improvements, but these screenshots look very nice. Is this from UT2004??

It would be nice to have it working in U1.

it is definately unreal, but what version ? unpatched=? for you ? Unreal was shipped iirc up to at least to 2.19 if not 224

I think LOD meshes were added in 220, so it would be any version previous to that.

Ah yes i remember curved surfaces, afaik the old unreal technology (which is now dead) mentioned that it was broken in later patches.

imo its a pretty nice touch, and it would be nice to see it back again so not only ATI owners can enjoy more detailed models.

it seems its not simply "broken" - indeed it requires some addition to the renderer such as truform from ati to make it work. I'm just reading into the nvidia stuff, nvidia is having something like this built in as well, but not sure yet how to implement it....
they disabled some parts of it because there was no hardware support at the time they added the LOD stuff, and now the technology is there but only truform was added so far. Maybe now i checked it and enabled them again even truform will produce some better results, but need way more time. Interesting stuff however, didnt mess with it before.

Dig a bit deeper, you will see (as I did) that the little bit of 'unticked' code actually only works with normal vertex meshes...not LODMeshes. (and nearly every single mesh in Unreal was converted to LODMeshes post-220 if I recall correctly)

I haven't even looked at the possibility of porting the original code for normal meshes to LOD meshes, but I imagine it would not be trivial because LODMeshes appear to have quite a lot of changes. (hence why it still isn't in it even up to the latest UT1 patch)

explains, but still it offers some quite interesting things as you can see for example in Q3, which uses curved surfaces :)

About 2 years ago, i accidentelly produced a curved suface in the Editor, but was unable reproduce it again. I create a curved surface on the X-mas sledge by accident.

But since it DID happen, it should be possible with an editor patched 225f. When it happened i realised that one side should be curved, after a rebuild, and when i id do the rebuild, there it was, a curved surface.

But it happened by accident, and could not recall how i did it.............

If I remember correctly the setting ended up distorting alot of the meshes. For example weapons like the Dispersion Pistol were rendered noticably curved when they obviously should've been straight. Other details such as the Warlord's tusks also looked very odd with the setting enabled.

What does the bMeshCurvy variable do within each Actor definition? Is its use related to the CurvedSurfaces variable in the Unreal.ini file in some way? When bMeshCurvy=True are these the only ones that will be affected by the extra Curved Surfaces processing?
