When i use Directx3d it will work for a little while eg 10-20 minutes and then it will freeze and ill have to restart the computer however it works on OpenGL, but Directx3d is faster.
(I think this happens with Unreal Gold as well but it hasnt really frozen because I havent played it enough)
Windows 98SE,
733Mhz
128MB RAM
Directx 9.0c
NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 420 (64MB)
89.81 driver version (i think its the latest)

Well it's been awhile since I used win 98, but I would definitely try the UT multimedia patch and S3TC textures. I personally like open gl and it runs a whole lot better than d3d for me. Here's my specs below.
Windows XP professional version 2002 Service pack 2
Athlon 64 3000+ (2.01 GHz 1 gigabyte ram)
MSI K8 NEO V2.0 NForce 3 250 chipset (motherboard)
Directx 9.0c
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
SoundBlaster Live

i know i should have posted sooner but i didnt but any way
ive decided that i will stick with opengl because of s3tc textures however i would like to fix the problem of the sound which is distorted to start with its not the music its just the sound and it is a bit slow to start the game as well

While the new S3TC textures [glow=yellow,2,300]will[/glow] run both on and offline for Unreal and UnrealGold. Just keep in mind that the newly made S3TC textures will [glow=yellow,2,300]not[/glow] work for UT online ! Only for single player !
The S3TC textures that came with your second UT CD however are fully compatible, on and offline
