Unreal + winXP w/ GF4

Post by PeaceKeeper »

This is terrible! reader beware!

I recently upgraded to winXP ... which runs great for everythign else BUT unreal. :( It works in safe mode, but crashes when loading to normal mode. I'm sure yo uguys understand the seriousness of this issue. If Ican't play unreal, I've lost like 25% or my gaming fun!!! totally unacceptable! please help.

Symptoms. Program crashes during load. at the little unreal logo. I have to end the process inorder to make it go away. I've tried using the D3D drivers (224 and 226) as well as Smif's opengl drivers (again both 224+226). It's the same in eihter case ... so maybe it's not a video issue ... just some winXP silliness??? I ran the progra mcompatibility wizard in winXP, doesn't run in win95 or win98 mode either.

My system: PIII-533mhz, 256MB rdram, lots of HD space, PNY Geforce4 4400 with the NVIDIA 28.32 drivers. Desktop is set to same resolution as in game. No other programs running.

ANY IDEAS? anyone else able t oget unreal running with similar config? thanks. any help would be cool. :)

...mmh...the correct answer would be: why the f....g hell are u using win xp and why do u think its some kind of upgrade...? LOL; ok...sry...couldn't resist.

But it sounds for me like a driver problem; did u try the latest reference drivers from nvidia ? i know a few ppl running unreal @ winxp with no problems - do u get some kind of error message ? take a look into ur unreal logfiles; and maybe copy & paste a crash message in here

No problem running Unreal under XP here.

and Smirftsch please, stop slaugthering this poor OS everytime you've got the occasion:)

Reference drivers should so the trick, and also latest drivers for your sound card if it's a creative they have realeased drivers for XP that are not included in the OS.

Smirf, lol. it realy is a good product. boots up like a billion times faster and is actually stable, unlike previous micro$oft products!
I've tried 4 different drivers. 2 nvidia (27.70, 28.32) and also some leaked beta drivers.

Kerilk, what are your system specs? Do you have a GF4?

Wish I had an error or something to work with, but hte program doesn't get past the 'loading' screen (you know 'unreal', written on a 1X3 inch white background) and then hangs ther forever. Problem may not be winXP-specific, someone else in our clan has same proplem with GF4 and win2000. Maybe something specific to NT operating systems then?? I don't think it's the graphics card, this one worked ok under win98se.

I've got :

PIII 700
256 MB RAM
Asus CUSL2 I815EP
GeForce 2 GTS
SB 128
Unreal 224 patched and 226 patched work verywell
(as well as unpatched).

How did you try to use OpenGL ?
Modified your config unreal.ini directly or just installed the driver?

Anyway just paste your unreal.ini in there so we can have a look at it.

And I don't think it is a problem with the Geforce4 cause I remember someone using it without problem.

Besides under XP we have a problem with the sound driver so it might come from that. What is your sound card, and do you have the most recent drivers for it?

Hello, I had the exact same problem as PeaceKeeper... But I solved it for myself.... think it will work for you too.... Because you guys thought the problem is with audio drivers, I tried to disable my aureal MX300 drivers... and it worked fine! ... just without sounds.... next I re-enabled the driver and went to safe mode Unreal... there I reversed all the audio settings (false->True etc.) hehe kinda dum I know, but it worked! then I just tried setting all the switches back until it crashed again... and the problem is....: direct sound!
Disable it and it should work. :)

ps. XP is great!

I also have an Aurel Vortex card, so I'll give that a try.  Apparently, there are a lot of sound technologies that arent' supported for this card under XP.  check this out
http://www.vortexofsound.com/drivers/drv_wxp.htm

"These drivers support digital audio, DirectSound, DS3D, A3D 3.0, MIDI (via DirectMusic), the wavetable header, the joystick port, and S/PDIF Out.

The drivers do not support EAX, A3D 3.0 reverb, or S/PDIF In."

All you have to do in xp is right click on the Unreal launch file (.exe) and go to the compatibility tab and set it to run in Windows 98 mode.

PROBLEM SOLVED =D

BTW: Windows 2000 ownz XP
