It's been quite a while since oldunreal had an overhaul, but we are moving to another server which require some updates and changes. The biggest change is the migration of our old reliable YaBB forum to phpBB. This system expects you to login with your username and old password known from YaBB.
If you experience any problems there is also the usual "password forgotten" function. Don't forget to clear your browser cache!

The "idiocracy" of content preservation

Post by Leo T_C_K »

I touched on the subject in this article posted by JackHonda (it was written by me, quite fast I have to say so it has a few typos).
I couldn't post it because of the stupid "new device/location" thing and I can't access the volny e-mail right now, so I had to ask him to post it.
Ugh...where do we start?
Well with the article of course.

I dwelve into many things here...without going far too deep into them. Because people get bored, they usually get bored even when reading this. But...that is what leads into the "idiocracy" of today.
You can blame it on many things, not checking enough, not reading enough, not being careful in general, too much confort, people using things without understanding them enough...well..enough then

As you can see the developement process of Unreal and many related things is short of chaotic. Entire periods of developement change the way things are numbered. Like past the "reboot" in 1997, versions were stuck in the 0.86 and 0.87 phase for a while, using the .ucx system model, while it switched late 1997 into version 1 but it still had the underlying old systems in like the 0.x numbering in the log/virtual machine, making things far from simple.
And don't get me started on the mess during the Unreal development crunch in 1998. Especially in the last month, it caused Tim to even forget to properly date the builds and what not in his log.
It was simply insane times. The may 1998 beta is not identical to the one in the Dreamcast article, the Dreamcast one didn't have the "beta" mark on the translator and had squids still in the game or something. But it was a close version. Another important missing version is the "master beta" build which is what the gw press strategy guide was based off, but given all the avaiable information its easy to restore that content. Like into the homebrew dreamcast version if they are interested, which is a good way to make the unreal maps more into "snyder cut" kind of way, because remember half life and the dreamcast version? It was more and not less....

But the idiocracy now lies in sites like tcrf.net which has plunged into darkness with stubborn moderation.
Its like...someone once said "the 98 build is fake" and someone took it to mean all the versions from 1998. And not realizing it means engine build 98. That's how it starts. How orders are carried in this world. Its all a conveyor belt and it has to fucking stop. Countless people suffered enough for this kind of crap, on massive scales sometimes. But you know, the origin of it, it has names and people behind it. But yea...the carried word...its so immensely frustrating. And this is me just pouring this out right now and right here.

How far is it all going to go? Why does society function like this, people becoming functions themselves and not thinking critically enough...
