Best version to run on Windows 98?

Post by d3vilsadvocate »

Hey all

Quick question for all ya unreal experts here: which is the latest version of Unreal (Gold) that will run on Windows 98?

I installed 226b as far as I can tell and it works fine. 227i would not boot since it was made for newer OSs

I can install a different non gold version if it matters.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. If I can end up playing online that would be the icing on the cake ;)

Unreal 226f and Unreal Gold. The Unreal 227 patches are compiled for newer Windows versions and are most likely incompatible or just slower. I know some older 227 versions still work on Windows 2000 but probably not 98.

Gold is still compatible with many servers because it has been the Golden Standard for clients for a long time. Early 227 clients may just give problems.

Do you know if I can connect to the master server with the Gold version? It says the Gamespy servers are down so…

You can manually set them if you change the config file.

227i is a weird one. It runs perfectly fine using KernelEx on Windows 98 and Me, however, it has some problems with windows 2000 unless you use a special WinDrv.dll that used to exist on the forum.

I guess the explanation for this is that KernelEx is newer than Windows 2000. SO KernelEx may support Windows API calls that were created after the end of mainstream support of Windows 2000. I've tried KernelEx years ago but it made my Windows 98 unstable so I quickly uninstalled. I have not tried it since.
