Unreal 2 alpha 697: possible to convert the maps?
I can't run that version anymore (maybe it only runs with Windows 98?) so I'm curious to know: has anyone ever been able to convert the maps to another version of the Unreal engine (1 or 2) that is actually functional?

I attempted to do that once but lost the work, sorry.
But otherwise it should be possible. There were some issues i couldn't figure out though. Maybe expert like yrex can help with this.

Re: Unreal 2 alpha 697: possible to convert the maps?
It would be great if they could be ported to the Unreal Engine 2 Runtime demo (this one: http://trolen.polytech.unice.fr/cours/maje/td5/UE2Runtime-22262001_Demo.exe ) because, unlike Unreal 2 and UT2004, it works with Crosire's Direct3D 8 to 9 wrapper and with ReShade. This makes it possible to run it in stereoscopy on modern systems.
EDIT: Okay, the Unreal Engine 2 Runtime demo is out of the question because it refuses to load material that belongs to a commercial version of the Unreal engine.

There's an existing Deathmatch map for ut99 that's made from Unreal2. Blanking on the name right now, otherwise I'd link you to it as it's on mapraider.com, so I'll get back to this if I remember later.

Re: Unreal 2 alpha 697: possible to convert the maps?
But was it actually converted, or made from scratch to look like it was from Unreal 2? Because I managed to run the editor on Windows XP, and it shows that the maps of the Unreal 2 alpha are made almost completely out of static meshes. The final version of Unreal 2 cannot load them (it fails with an error saying it cannot find the map) nor import them (all views in the editor remain empty). There's an existing Deathmatch map for ut99 that's made from Unreal2. I've only been able to import the geometry and lights (but no textures or static meshes) in UnrealEd 2.1, save the obtained pseudo-level and run it with the latest version of Unreal v227. Is it possible to export static meshes?

It might be possible to port it to something similar engine-wise. Try an older engine like the Mobile Forces one. Unreal 2 ran on that engine at some point in the developement. The terrain however will be the biggest issue. Since mobile forces terrain is staticmesh.

You can use dgVoodoo 2 for Unreal 2 and UT 2004.It would be great if they could be ported to the Unreal Engine 2 Runtime demo (this one: http://trolen.polytech.unice.fr/cours/maje/td5/UE2Runtime-22262001_Demo.exe ) because, unlike Unreal 2 and UT2004, it works with Crosire's Direct3D 8 to 9 wrapper and with ReShade. It is more complete than Crosire's wrapper.

That kind of stuff is new. It's not a conversion, just using the textures. UBerserker also made something similar with the EXU expansion pack, the final map is in the theme too and is worth playing.

Maybe it just checks licensee or package file version only. Mabye compare and eventually adjust those using UE Explorer which displays them.EDIT: Okay, the Unreal Engine 2 Runtime demo is out of the question because it refuses to load material that belongs to a commercial version of the Unreal engine.

Re: Unreal 2 alpha 697: possible to convert the maps?
We started a project to convert/rework the 697 maps about a year ago with jackhonda, but postponed it due to everything, but a map was coming along nicely. with a new terrain as opposed to converting the terrain (which is complicated but not impossible) for the old engine. That project is on hold and won't come back until after the upsx release and steele dawn rework.
