It's been quite a while since oldunreal had an overhaul, but we are moving to another server which require some updates and changes. The biggest change is the migration of our old reliable YaBB forum to phpBB. This system expects you to login with your username and old password known from YaBB.

Unreal Nightmare throws you back in the original Unreal campaign, changing not the levels, but everything in them.

Brought back by an unknown force, you now have to fight your way through the planet again, finding new weapons, fighting new monsters, facing nightmare-ish challenges.

Evade an army of Skaarj ships, fight Chizra himself, hunt down the Nali Demon Lord, face-off against the Demon Skaarj and the Prime Queen, and survive against the very maker of this Nightmare.


-Every single encounters in the game have been completely redesigned to embrace the arcade nature of Unreal's gameplay. Expect some levels to have hordes of monsters.

-Every level brings forth new monster variations, with customized scripts. Things start simple, and get crazier as you progress.

-Over 16 epic bosses awaits you, including a proper final boss

-Over 12 new weapons and over 30 new items to help you battle through these new challenges

-Many upgrades and secrets are added in all the levels. After completion of the mod, you are brought to a Level Select and can see every upgrades and keys you have missed. Can you find them all?

-Collect enough Nightmare Keys for an alternate ending

-Targeting HUD gives you the name and health of your enemies

-Optional Leveling system, giving experience for kills and increases some of your stats when leveling up.

-Full support for all difficulty levels as well as a SUPER EASY mode for anyone to enjoy the mod

-Fully tested multiplayer/online support

-Boss Run mode available (start a new game, go to Level Select and enter the Boss Run doors)


1.3 is the final version. It includes 43 levels, a final boss, 2 endings, level select, a million tweaks, balances & fixes, properly looping custom music, fixed co-op support, and more.


INSTRUCTIONS: Simply unzip all the content inside your Unreal Gold installation. Start a new game and select the Unreal Nightmare campaign in the menu.

More details are included in the read me or on my website, including instructions on how to run a multiplayer server with this mod.

Collecting 30 keys changes the ending. Collecting every secrets + every keys and finishing the game and going back to the level select, you get a little bonus. (the level select itself tells you every secret and keys you're missing)

Rumor says they can also do... other things ;)

Seriously though, good job on this. This is perfect timing, I'm starting a vacation and I can play this without rushing. Really looking forward to it.

Especially those KrallAssasins are very annoying lol.

Btw, there are BSP holes and invisible surfaces in few maps like invisible bridges near merc ship in Harobed Village, etc.

Gah, yes, they crop out of nowhere a lot. I don't know how the Harobed one didn't show up in testing. Its not a BSP-hole, its a wrong-zone bug. Seriously, sometimes I didn't even rebuild or touch anything in the map itself and it broke. There's something wrong with how original maps were created.

Anyway, thanks, I'll fix any I can find. Any fixes will go directly to the main download.

I'm partially in, playing it slowly and enjoying your work a great deal. You should be really proud of your work. It retains the flavor of Unreal but makes "yet another playthrough" still be fun and interesting. That's not an easy balance to strike.

If anyone is a fan of playing SP or coop style then this mod is worth your time.

I must say. Your is mod is toughest rival of EXU2. But I am enjoying more compared to EXU2.

Just did Spire Village. I have to say that it was one of my top five moments playing a mod. Was totally not expecting that experience after slogging through so much tough monster fighting. I understood it for what it was and took the time to enjoy everything. In fact I'm going to replay that level before moving on, it was that fun.

I'm very, very impressed Jake and super glad I reinstalled to play your mod. Well worth the effort.

With me just not having time to record a full run of the mod, I've recorded a beating of the Final Boss.

It was a particularly fun achievement for me to make a special boss fight entirely from scratch instead of using some existing pawn.

Jake, I played this entire thing all the way through and very much enjoyed the whole series. You did very well planning it all out too. Just as I was starting to get a bit tired of the repetitive slog you threw that hard curve ball and I was immediately invested again. I've played more maps and more series than most longer devotees to the game and I can say with confidence that UN was in the top three of everything I've tried.

You should consider releasing a cheat guide. Some of the hidden things were *super* well hidden and it took ghosting to discover some of them. It might be nice to have a checklist to follow on a second or third playthrough. I'm very sure I missed some things so having a guide to say "there is a hidden 'X' on this level" would be great so I'd know to really explore each corner and nook.

Again, well done on this. It was great, great fun!

When you let the credits run through, it brings you back to the Level Select where you can see which secrets you've missed in what levels and you can go find every one of them.

(I just fixed a bug in there though, so ideally someone would need to re-download or there's a few false positives, nothing major though)

Thank you for that link, that's precisely what I would like to have. I'm going to print that tonight and start another playthrough this weekend. I'm going to go for a total completion.

Sorry I didn't see this already. I purposely stayed away from the website because I wanted to play with no knowledge of anything. I enjoy the 'reveal' of a new product as much as anything else and I find that developers often show way too much trying to get people to play and there is not enough "aha!" when you actually play it. To be honest I'd spoiler tag your video because it does show the end and I'd warn people who don't want it spoiled.

Can you explain the key for that page you suggested? I'm not sure what the A1 through A9 are.

Its the ammo upgrades. 6 is flak ammo, 2 are clips/shells, 3 stinger, etc.

Casey, does that change the map file in Unreal? It's been my experience that by altering the download flag that's not properly set in various UT files I've run across over the years, this causes a version mismatch and I have to compress and upload the altered map as a new redirected file along side the other one.

I've read in several places that this isn't supposed to be the case but I've tried several methods of changing the flag and all of them resulted in version mismatch.

looks like ucc packageflags breaks maps... said client got to NMTheSunSpire and it failed to load mylevel.

EDIT: I assume packageflags resaves the map without conforming to the old GUID. so I assume that's true. Chocopackageedit doesnt seem to edit the guid since its only a flag in the binary of the file.
