New S3TC releases for Unreal Tournament

Post by DieHard SCWS »

Welcome to the UT S3TC releases. I decided to split the releases for Unreal and UT. I guess sign up to this thread so you are briefed when an update is available.

There is a large realease upcomming for UT. And not in the sense of new textures but a fix that hopefully deals with the skating player glitch forgood. In effect it means you will have to replace ALL your S3TC files for the new files. And to prevent confusement, this ONLY aplies to UT and not to Unreal.

Critical S3TC releases for Unreal Tournament

Post by DieHard SCWS »

Updates:

Because of the speed to process everything, 1 new package is included being noxxpack.utx The package does contain beta textures, and though most of them look cool, there still are some beta textures that still lack certain detail.

The same pretty much applies to city.utx That package too may contain beta textures, so be warned. But it does provide a high resolution flyby through the city :)

For both goes, if its really bad, than ill work on those next week and release some better candidates.

Technical updates:

As far as the technical updates concernes. At least theoretically the skating player glitch should be solved forgood. The non tiling clouds should be fixed as well.

The disapearing waterfall is NOT fixed. The waterfall is sitting in the HubbEffects package and the error is caused by the new mergertool. The package needs this tool to be functional, and cannot be produced by the old mergertool. So either stick with the normal package or use the S3TC version while you are at risk that on certain occasions the waterfall is mising. Needs to be said, the error is extreeeeeemelly rare, so from that point of view, you can safelly use the S3TC package. Fixing the error can only be done when a new and better version of the mergertool is available.

Use of downloads:

As for the downloads, if you use the Extreme End packages, still download all High End packages and overwrite those with the available Extreme End packages.

For all S3TC users goes, re-download all the files you have and replace them with the new ones.

Big thanks:

Further i want to say big thanks to Paperk and Usaar33 for the work on this, and again Protos for providing a testserver. And i sincerelly hope errors didnt slip in on my end. I tried to make sure everything was processed properly, but errors may have slipped in, i am human too :)

The Downloads :)

Re: New S3TC releases for Unreal Tournament

Are there some more verbose instructions floating around in regards of installing these textures? I already have the S3TC Textures installed from Disk 2.

"For all S3TC users goes, re-download all the files you have and replace them with the new ones."

Not quite sure what this means- I have gone to the UnrealTexture Website but it has not been updated or maintaned for quite some time.

I realize how goofy these questions are, but after searching Forums and researching on my own, I still have yet to find a concise, understandable set of installation instructions-

Thanks!!

Well, go to the website and download the textures from there. They are certainly better than those from CD2.

I just hope you have not changed any already done Highres texture in GenEarth, otherwise I might collapse. I have already done 78 textures for my beach map ("Low" > 3,34 MB, S3TC: 208 MB). Dont make me panic since you said something a long time ago about possible changes of the S3TC textures in GenEarth. Its no fun to make each texture twice with all requiered changes (sometimes bigger than thought).

BTW: You should fix the following

GenEarth.ground.Dirt
requieres the same Highres textures as "Dirt_su". (so actually you just have to double an already existing HR texture).

(although the HR versions I have used from your package are limited to the gras texture, the highres dirt-su, the path4 and pathend4, rock 1x thingy and the pebbles texture)

Emerald, thanks so much for a prompt reply-

I have downloaded the provided Textures from this Thread (Roughly 2.8 GB)

I guess my primary question is how to install them properly?

Where should I extract these files? Do i overwrite Existing Textures? If so, where should I place these.

Should create a second instance of my UT Directory before installation?

I understand these are novice questions and apologize if all this has been covered before. I greatly appreciate and thoughts or feedback-

Thanks again for your time and patience!

Do i overwrite Existing Textures?
This.
Just one thing: Normally it would cause versions mismatches but not in this case, since DieHard has the requiered tools. So, remember not to replace normally SPECIALLY a default package.
With 227g release you can also map then directly with those s3tc textures. (at least they work in the ed.. this is no surprise with DXT support).

As usual appologise for the late reply and ill try replying to several other questions on the forums as well as several PM's(Creavion and others) i got here. But as it goes my health gets in the way with everything.....

Ill just start from the first post and work my way down:

Are there some more verbose instructions floating around in regards of installing these textures?   I already have the S3TC Textures installed from Disk 2.

"For all S3TC users goes, re-download all the files you have and replace them with the new ones."

Not quite sure what this means-  I have gone to the UnrealTexture Website but it has not been updated or maintaned for quite some time.
Yes there is a detailed instruction page here: S3TC Installation UT  Its just i still need to write a similar page for Unreal. But the UT page contains all needed info and downloads to make UT run properly.

As for updates on the site, there are updates on the site almost on weekly base, depending on the remarks, critisisms or questions i receive by mail, PM, forums or otherwise. But yeah it might not show directly, but it is being maintained :)

I realize how goofy these questions are, but after searching Forums and researching on my own, I still have yet to find a concise, understandable set of installation instructions-
Theres no such things as goofy remarks! Everybody here had questions in the past, and still have. Its the sole purpose of these and other forums around to ask """goofy""" questions and have them answered. So no matter how ""retarded"" dont hesitate to ask them, thats what this site and others are for :)

Well, go to the website and download the textures from there. They are certainly better than those from CD2.
Very true, the updates contain tons of new textures, as well as fixes, repaired misalinged textures, fixed masking errors and what more.

Yes the GenEarth package has to be updated in time, simply because of the Extreme End packages. And the Extreme End packages were invented exactly for large projected texures like the grass, rock and soil textures. But you should not worry about it too much. If that happens ill help you update your S3TC textures and have those re-released. Simply dont forget that is the beneficial part of seperate S3TC packages, as they can be re-released on any given moment without netcompatible problems.

Just make sure to keep your layered PSD files so i can help update them if there is need for that! PS. yeah, you can use the snow texture, and if you need more snow or ice just sent me an email.

Actually they are different. Dirt is a different texture than Dirt_su but i did use the same high res texture for both. Dirt_su is however the same as Dirt_su2 but the last one is alot darker. Dirt_sw2 is exactly the same as Dirt_su2, as they are the same texture and the exact same coloration.

They all will also be updated with better and improoved versions, and in that update Dirt and Dirt_su will be different. But again dont worry about it, even after you released your map and textures ill help you out to ugrade those as well. And likelly when that time comes, i will update your textures before i release the GenEarth update, so they will be released at the same time, and i will mention that on the release, so people will download both the update GenEarth package and yours updated package(s).

I guess my primary question is how to install them properly?

Where should I extract these files?  Do i overwrite Existing Textures?  If so, where should I place these.

Should create a second instance of my UT Directory before installation?
Yes, you simply can overwrite the packages in your UT that are located in your Texture folder. Of course you can make a secondary backup if you wish, but worse case scenario, you also can download the normal  and 2nd UT CD  textures from the site so you can revert back if needed.

With 227g release you can also map then directly with those s3tc textures. (at least they work in the ed.. this is no surprise with DXT support).
True, but he is using UT and patch 227 only applies to Unreal ;)

Well in this case I will try to send you the "workfiles" (in case you can survey those). Even for me kinda hard, since I was in some cases "blowzy"). For me it would be some kind of "idiot work". And do not ask me for an Extreme version, impossible. Thats something I will NOT do. (since the sources were not available with such a resolution anyway).
I can not keep the source files that long, although I still have free space on my HDD. The ones of my Antalius (which were bulls.hit anyway) were already deleted a time ago.
So the benefit is not existing for me as creator, since most of my textures are simply based on your ones.

Not fun, really no fun. It did cost a lot of time to create this stuff. Actually I thought this would now settle the matter.

No seriously... the only reason why I made a s3tc package at all was becaise I found the sand, foilage and vine textures with a very good quality on several sites.
I had no choice: Since I wanted to combine them with Unreal textures I had to make 2 versions. I think it would have looked stupid to make only one and then maybe now low res or no highres textures.

I am ALREADY sick of that NOW. This is only a pain in the a.ss from the already mentioned reasons.

Diehard-

Without question I wish to thank you for all your hard work, time and patience in re-texturing UT. I also want to add that I hope your health gets better and that if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know.

I am quite embarrased to note that I completely missed the Tutorial you have posted on your webpage for installation. The information is concise, well written and easy to understand. It is exactly what I need to proceed.

Thank you again for all of your time and patience with me. I look forward to utilizing these new Textures and will install them tonight!

Thanks Unodir,
I am quite embarrased to note that I completely missed the Tutorial you have posted on your webpage for installation.   The information is concise, well written and easy to understand. It is exactly what I need to proceed.

All together its a large website, and has more than 80000 pages, so its easy to overlook something....... But i will go add a button on the texture downloadpage to point people to the download instructions. And ill do the same for Unreal. But as said, if there are additional questions simply ask them.

Well in this case I will try to send you the "workfiles" (in case you can ..........
.
.
.
.....from the already mentioned reasons.

Your picking it up the wrong way, i am not asking you to produce Extreme End versions. And let me explain. Years ago i made the soil and grass textures, and they were made in the size of 2048 x 2048 pixels. The only way to create the Extreme End versions was to create grass and soil from scratch in 4096 x 4096. The problem than is, that the textures from Low/High End would differ from the Extreme End. To prevent that i am gonna use the Extreme End to also redo the Low and High End packages.

I am NOT asking you to provide Extreme End textures, just stick to Low and High End versions. I am very aware you are putting alot of time and frustrations in your work and i dont want to make your work more complicated. So you can safelly work on your Low/High End models and in time when you are done simply sent me the dds files and i will process them for you in the Low/high End S3TC packages. Period!

Than in whatever future moment, and lets say in a year from now, i will rerelease the GenEarth package in Low, High and Extreme End. Prior to the release i will also update your Low and High End package (free of charge :P ) and re-release those as well. For all that, you dont have to do anything at all, just provide me the PSD files when you are done with them and sent them to me along with the dds files. I will store them on your behalf so you can clean out your harddrive if you wish. And when the time is there i will reprocess them and re-release them together with the GenEarth update.

Apart from the story above, i dont see anything wrong on your work on Antalius and there is no reason for you to put yourself down. You worked hard on the map and textures, and it shows. It all looks fine as far as i am concerned..........

So with all respect, just continue your work on the new project, and when time comes to update the GenEarth package i will update your work as well, period!

So stop worrying and frustrating yourself, there is no need for it.

And let me explain. ...
ok, makes sense, got it.
Than in whatever future moment, and lets say in a year from now, i will rerelease the GenEarth package in Low, High and Extreme End. Prior to the release i will also update your Low and High End package
Ok. But from now it looks unlikely anyway. I dont see a release of 227g within this year. D.amn!
And since the package will not be introduced before release, I would not wonder if the current highres version would not see the day of light.

ATM I am uploading the material for you. I have made an info docx file which gives you some information since some textures are maybe not obvious (in terms of "what psd"). Everything else is as far as it was requiered commented (layer names as comments). You should not have that much trouble to figure out what does belong to what. At least I could not make it easier.
Well, a pleasure to upload 1,18 GB psd material with DSL 3000. Yippie! Splitted into 6 parts (again pw secured). When I have finished the job you will be alerted over PM.
Since the package is not finished so far, I have to add some more textures anyway. So the part 7 will come later.
@Antalius: Actually the way I "remastered" the leafy foilage texture e.g was "bullsh1t". I have made a lot of mistakes there. I see them by myself. Actually my current work should be .. somehow better, at least good enough as "officially 227g contribution". I hope that. Nobody wants cr.appy textures.

I see. Actually... I have already upload the first 2 parts (of 6) and the third one is in progress. But fine, ok, the remaining parts will be uploaded there. (although I did not have that problems as uploder, but I guess yo are annoyed as downloader, right^^?)

edit: looks bad, at least atm, installation crashes every time during the "unzipping" process. I can not make a reboot now, maybe it works then.. but also maybe not, I dont know whats going on.

edit 2: Most retarded software ever? First the installation is a pain (nearly not working). And then I thought its done. Shortcuts during installation activated.. where are they? Not existing??!! Ok, I opened manually the programms folder.
Error: Software not correctly installed .. WTF?
Ok. Removing of the software with a possible reinstallation? CCleaner did not list the software and manual removing only worked after an other reboot. GREAT! Can not remember where I had that much trouble of that kind. Looks like I have to send you the remaining stuff on the old way.

Re: New S3TC releases for Unreal Tournament

Post by DieHard SCWS »

Ok, here we go for Unreal Tournament.

About these updates.

There are a fair amount of new textures available but the main real update as far as textures have been made by Ahaigh on the GenFX package and a few on Crypt and NaliCast. Than the bulk of the updates concern textures that have been turned Extreme End. And to do so, i also had to re-process all High and Low End version to make sure they match eachother. The other part of the update concern alot of fixes for both Unreal and UT. Mainly in UT some bugs apeared in the last year that badly needed a fix.

Dates

All utx packages in this update, and if needed fixes in the next weeks(i hope not) will have as date September 25th 2011. If you find a wrong date than please post that, because it means that i accidentelly uploaded an old file.

Crypt package, First comes first get )

The Crypt package with a huge update P

And it huge because theres only 2 textures in that package, with this update the package is 100% done ;) All updates made by Ahaigh

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

UT_LowEnd_Crypt.zip
UT_HighEnd_Crypt.zip
UT_ExtremeEnd_Crypt.zip

GenFX package

Large update concerning the amount of updatable textures, this package too is completed. All updates made by Ahaigh

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

UT_LowEnd_GenFX.zip
UT_HighEnd_GenFX.zip
UT_ExtremeEnd_GenFX.zip

NaliCast package

The bookcases have been updated by ahaigh and i shipped in a feww walls.

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

UT_LowEnd_NaliCast.zip
UT_HighEnd_NaliCast.zip
UT_ExtremeEnd_NaliCast.zip

DecayedS package

While working on the update i noteiced a big difference beween Extreme, High and Low End. I found 20+ textures that were simply bloated up original textures. The Extrem End version dropped from 951 Mb to 936Mb. On a second attempt i still found differences which resulted in re-processing the entire package. Several textures were added and the package reached a new milestone and surpassed the 1 Gigabyte threshold and is now 1086 Megabyte.

Remark 20+ stupid fixes and a whole bunch of updates.

UT_LowEnd_DecayedS.zip
UT_HighEnd_DecayedS.zip
UT_ExtremeEnd_DecayedS.zip

GenEarth package

The package received updates on the grass textures so it could be turned Extreme End. Still i am not satisfied about the grass, and likelly in the future there will be another update. Needs to be said, in Extreme end it looks awsome, the quality on the grass itself is unmatched. It also contains pretty much zero repeat. This is the reason i developed the Extreme End versions in the first place. I wanted to ship in the rockfaces but decided to not do that, i need to have second look at those.

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

GenTerra package

GenTerra contains all other variations on the grass, which ment that this package had to be redone completelly. It took my secondary computer system over 24 hours to make all calculations for the dds files. Extreme End is now 579 Mb.

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

NaliFX package

NaliFX also contains a few grass textures that needed to be updated.

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

ShaneChurch package

ShaneChurch contains a fix for the missing Palette2. For whatever reason Palette2 is being ditched while making the package conform the reduced nettextures. I tried several things, but was left with one solution untill i better ucc tool is build. The solution is to remove the SMoon2 S3TC texture that makes use of Palette2. There are two the same moons in this package, one that has the normal moon color and the purple version of that one. Its the purple version that has been removed, and presumably the less used one. Still a pitty..........

Remark: Critical fix on the package to fix a missing Palette2

ShaneSky package

This release contains a fix for the annoying black squares that people sometimes encountered. Like the skyboxes i forced the planetsmoons to be masked at all time by adding an Alpha channel to the textures. Theoretically if the texture is being used as last texture in a skybox it could punch a hole to the universe and create a monster of a HOM. But i never heard this happen with the skybox textures, while they really pose a risk on that. Since it was succesfull on those textures, than its unlikelly this will happen on these. I doubt a mapper ever will add them as last texture in a skybox. The package also have the offset atmospheres fixed which were reported not that long ago.

Remark: Critical fix on the package that contains a masking and atmospheric fix on all moons/planets, as well as a fix for the Black Square behind planet/moon bug.

SkyBox package

Pretty much the same as ShaneSky, the moonplanet is forced masked and has the atmosphere fixed. Secondary, the high resolution clouds have been ditched. In both Unreal and UT it triggered the so called Non-Tiling clouds. Unclear is why it happens, but effectivelly something went wrong on the Drawscale function. For now it means the cloud textures had to be ditched, which is a pitty of course........

Remark: Critical fix on the package that contains two different fixes on the moonplanet, as well as a fix for the Non-Tiling clouds bug.

SkyCity package

SkyCity also contains a few grass textures that needed to be updated, in this case the grass with the cobblestones on them, to be seen in SkyTown.

Remark: First release of the Extreme End version.

SpaceFX package

SpaceFX again pretty much the same as ShaneSky, the Earth texture is forced masked.

Remark: Critical fix on the package that contains a masking and atmospheric fix on the Earth texture, as well as a fix for the Black Square behind planet/moon bug.

XbpFX package:

XbpFX Extreme End version wasnt processed properly during the skating player fix mega update, people still were skating on occasion with this package.... I re-processed all of them to be sure. Stupidly enough, this was the package that triggered the solution for the fix to begin with LMAO.

Remark: Critical fix on the package that contains a fix for the skating player glitch.

Hourences packages:

Hourences may not be that known in the Unreal community, but he is in the UT community. In the past he released several texture packages for Unreal, UT, UT2003 and UT2004. Using the textures provided by Hourences i was able to produce the High and Low End S3TC versions. The Extreme End versions could not be made since the textures he has simply did not go further than High End. At that time of release its pretty obvious he didnt make them larger, as there was no need for that backthan. Initially there were 4 packages that were turned S3TC, however oné package dropped of due to the skating player glitch. Thanks to Protos who made the testmap available on his server for online testing :) The packages have been limited tested on a server to exclude the skating player glitch. But there is still that second unknown factor build in some maps that can trigger the glitch. If it happens please report that. For that reason, use is entirely at your own risk !!!

The download contain 3 packages:
- HourIndusX_UT
- HourNature_UT
- HourPitores_UT

Remark: All credits go to Hourences, i only assembled the S3TC packages, and made a few textures forced masked.

2nd CD UT S3TC textures fix

There are still player that prefer these packages above the UTRP textures. I am not ganna say anything about that since its my believe everybody simply has the right to make that personal decision. Sometimes i like to play with the original textures as well. The problem is, that those package still contain the skating player glitch......

To help out the players that prefer these package, i processed all packages and made them conform the reduced net textures. Theoretically the bug should be gone, but it has not been tested at all. If you use these textures, and you encounter problems than please post those here. Of course if you play with them, dont report misaligned textures, masking problems etc, as they simply are part of these packages :) So only report online problems like the skating player glitch.

Vanilla packages

A whole new serie of packages will be released called Vanilla UT and Vanilla Unreal. These packages have a few alterations to the normal S3TC packages. You cannot read the text on the holoscreens anymore, so they will remain neutral and wont interfere with another storyline(like Red Nemesis). The planet and moons will look more like the originals, which means they loose the noticable atmosphere and will look alot closer to the original. Some players didnt like them, and those packages offer a solution to that. The vanilla packages only concern the packages that have that kind of stuff in them, so its a limited amount of packages. Of course all packages will have Low End, High End and Extreme End versions.

I planned to have at least one of those packages include, but no go. As soon as one is available, ill post thtose here as well.

For some reason, the small waterfall outside the village in Glathriel Village part 1 (glathriel1.unr) of RTNP does not show up using these high-res textures. I'm not referring to the first waterfall in the cave, but the second waterfall outside the village. Any idea why this is? I've only tested it in UnrealTournament.

Yes its a known bug and this is the official report on that:

Date of first report: November 17th 2009
Reported by:  g_p (Unreal Texture Forums)
Link to forum:  http://www.unrealtexture.com/General/Website/Forums/Forums01/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=295
Affected renderers:  OpenGL, D3D8, D3D9
Involved utx package(s): HubEffects.utx
Used Mergertool: Version 3
Affected maps: - DmGlathriel (RTNP)
Does the bug apear in S3TC UT: No, this bug is limited to Unreal (edit, seems it also apears in UT, reported by Ligtning_Hunter)

Known causes: Waterfalls are mostly added where the settings for the texture is set to masked and translucent. If however the texture is set to masked alone, than the waterfall will disapear.

Possible fixes:
- Using Mertool version 2 solves the problem, this however will render the S3TC HubEffects.utx package unusable due to the procedural texture sitting in the first place of the package.
- Updated Mergertool Version 3 to Mergertool version 4.
- Update of the used renderers.

User end fixes:
- Either live with it, its after all a super rare bug.
- Or use the normal HubEffects.utx package instead the S3TC version.

I did not test it in UT, so if you say now its there as well, than it happens in both games. As the report already tells, its for the moment an unavoidable issue, untill the mergertool is being rewritten  :(

Its either that, or use the normal package, but than you will loose the high resolution nacelles(engines) used on the Vortex Rikers ship.

Well, for now I can change the waterfall to translucent. I hope it's eventually fixed!

Thx for this DieHard. I'll be trying it out and will give feedback.

Just so I'm clear on the steps for installing the best graphics...

I should download all files here:
http://www.uttexture.com/UT/Website/Downloads/Textures/ExtremeEnd/StockUT/UTExtremeEnd.htm

as well as 2ndCDTextures.zip as directed from http://www.uttexture.com/UT/Website/Articles/PlayingUT/Tweaking/S3TCInstallationUT/S3TCInstallationUT.htm

I did not install the 2nd CD as directed. I understand this will work on most servers without the sliding character bug and crashes. I backed up my old stock texture folder incase some servers do give me problems. Will keep you posted

Best of health,
Shaad

Hi, just wanted to know, is there going to be updates on all texture packages ?

Extreme end are well and very good looking but they are still lots of textures which stays original and could benefit from a little upgrade ^^

Again sorry for the late reply, but you all now the story.

To Shaad:

There is a difference between the server and you as a player. If you do run a server for UT you have to follow the instructions of this page:

http://www.uttexture.com/UT/Website/Articles/Servers/Tweaking/S3TCServerPackages/S3TCServerPackages.htm

The purpose is to prevent the skating/frozen player glitch which happens if you install the S3TC textures from the 2nd CD or the Net textures (reduced 'server only' textures) on your server(s) . Only install the normal textures that came with the first CD. Or download the files from that page and you will safe.

The S3TC textures are NOT required for the severs because S3TC happens on the client side and NOT on the server side and is therefore pointless to install and will only lead to problems for S3TC players. So basically forget about S3TC for servers.

And since S3TC works purely on the client side(you as a player who wants to join a server, or play alone at home as single player) you have to install the S3TC textures.

It all depends how powerful your computer is and how large you video card is. Needs to be said, any computer can run the Extreme textures on a relative new computer, and if not switch to High End.

If you can play with Extreme End, you indeed have to download ALL files from this page:

http://www.uttexture.com/UT/Website/Downloads/Textures/ExtremeEnd/StockUT/UTExtremeEnd.htm

Including the missing High End textures. The missing High End textures fill in the gap from the not yet made Extreme End textures. So part will be Extreme End and part will be High End(until they are also updated)

To Deu sex:

Yes, at the end all textures will be updated, except the procedural textures(unless a fix is being made, but unlikely it ever happens)

At the moment the project is at a stand still for various reasons, but i will continue as soon as possible. At the moment i am working on a project that prevents me from working on the S3TC textures, but as soon as it is possible i will continue. I love to work on the textures and miss it allot. I will always keep working on the S3TC textures till the work is done, period. So no worries there :)

The procedurals could be replaced by sets of animation maybe? Like, a texture that's named exactly as the procedural, but being static, and a first frame in a sequence.

Yeah, that could work theoretically.....

But as it is the mergertool switches the low resolution textures for the high res DDS version and if you have an animation, you could add the first texture but not the following textures.

So you are left with an animation that has one frame :| Beside that, the procedural textures have never the same animation and work on random, so the result has a more static look, which would be a shame to look at.

But on itself its a sound idea :), but undoable....
