you could try to switch to fmod then. For 227j a lot of updates have been made already, but mostly due to missing time I can't tell a release date yet (still...) Sad

If I replace this line ine UnrealLinux.ini:
AudioDevice=ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem
by this one:
AudioDevice=FMODAudioDrv.FMODAudioDevice

the game still crash at start:

Is it possible to ask Unreal Gold to use SDL2 for graphic renderer AND audio?

I finally resolved my issue:

I used this libraries from lin_convenience_libs:

libfmod-3.75.so
libfmod.so -> ./libfmod-3.75.so
libopenal.so -> libopenal.so.1.12.854
libopenal.so.1 -> libopenal.so.1.12.854
libopenal.so.1.12.854

and others from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS:

libalut.so.0 -> libalut.so.0.1.0
libalut.so.0.1.0
libasound.so.2 -> libasound.so.2.0.0
libasound.so.2.0.0
libcaca++.so.0 -> libcaca++.so.0.99.19
libcaca.so.0 -> libcaca.so.0.99.19
libcaca++.so.0.99.19
libcaca.so.0.99.19
libncursesw.so.5 -> libncursesw.so.5.9
libncursesw.so.5.9
libpulsecommon-11.1.so
libpulse-simple.so.0 -> libpulse-simple.so.0.1.1
libpulse-simple.so.0.1.1
libpulse.so.0 -> libpulse.so.0.20.2
libpulse.so.0.20.2
libSDL-1.2.so.0 -> libSDL-1.2.so.0.11.4
libSDL-1.2.so.0.11.4
libslang.so.2 -> libslang.so.2.3.1
libslang.so.2.3.1
libsndio.so.6.1
libtinfo.so.5 -> libtinfo.so.5.9
libtinfo.so.5.9
libwrap.so.0 -> libwrap.so.0.7.6
libwrap.so.0.7.6

Then I launch Unreal (GOG Edition) like this:

#!/bin/sh
cd System
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=1999
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=../libs ./UnrealLinux.bin -log

For the moment I tested successfully on Ubuntu 18.04 and Manjaro 18.1.4 freshly installed (without need to install complementary packages).

If you own the GOG version, you can try my Lutris installer script (beta) here:
https://lutris.net/games/unreal-gold/
choose script called "Wine GOG Gold + Patch 227i version"
It will "automagically" install Unreal GOG edition on Linux with 227i patch.
At start a menu appear and you could launch Windows (Wine) or Linux version.
