What FPS do you use when playing Unreal?

Iíve always wondered what the correct setting for FPS is when playing Unreal98/UT99. Iíve read many threads on the internet ranging from 60-200. Some claiming that when the FPS is higher than 200, Unreal starts to have physics issues. Some saying the physics issues start at when FPS goes above 60 even.

Iíve generally noticed that as long as my FPS is below 200, my game seems to play alright, but if thereís bugs I donít notice, I would reduce it immediately. For example, Quake 1/2 and GoldSrc (CS1.6, HL1, TFC) are capped at 100 FPS for this reason. Along with Quake 3 and itís derivitives (SOF2, MOHAA, Urban Terror) are capped at 333 FPS before glitches happen.

Most people play U98/UT99 with 60 refresh rate and VSync enabled, so 60 FPS is their capped FPS, and they wonít experience any issues. The second most common FPS used is 100 and 200 when using the older OpenGL renderer and the FrameRateLimit cvar.

Would anyone like to share about why Unreal98/UT99 should be capped at a certain FPS?

60. My monitor has a refresh rate of max 60 and I have no use rendering more frames per second than my monitor can display.

Generally, in most games, even if your display monitor can only do 60/75hz, if you render a game at higher FPS than your monitor supports, the game will overall still feel and play better. Counter-Strike is a good example of this. Pro player 244hz displays donít prevent them from playing the game at 500+ FPS, and reduces overall latency while playing.

unreal's tickrate attempts to clamp at 120 ticks/second, so I would assume any frame rate above 120 is considered too high

Thanks for that info Casey. Iíll cap my FPS at 120 for now on, as well as the tick rate.
