Horrible stuttering on GTX770 with patch 227i

Print Post
Hello guys,
recently I got a GTX770 and felt the urge to play Unreal for the billionth time or so, but there is some weird stuttering that I couldn't get rid of.
Every 2-3 seconds, the framerate goes down to ~40 fps, and then up again to 60, for no apparent reason.
I know that realtime shadows could be causing the issue so I disabled them, but nothing changed.
The problem occurs at any resolution and with all renderers except for software (which by the way won't enter fullscreen on Windows 8).
The problem does not occur with version 226 and 3dfx emulation.

HW Specs:
-i7 2600k @4.6GHz
-16 GB DDR3
-nvidia GTX 770 with latest driver (337.91)
-ASUS Xonar DX sound card (surround enabled)
-Windows 8.1 Update 1 64 bit

The system is kept maniacally clean, so there is no malware or anything.

Any idea?

I'm running Windows 8.1 Unreal has always been fine. Make sure you don't have ultra-high res shadows turned on and if in doubt, post your opengl.ini setting to pastebin and link it here

a few ideas:

Try with fresh ini (can backup old one, just to be sure its not that).
Try setting [Core.System] UseCPU to -1 to disable forcing a specific affinity or if that's not helping instead to the last core (started with 0, so if you have a quadcore its 3).
Try running this tool while playing:  www.oldunreal.com/temp/WintimeGetTimePrecision1ms.7z

Thanks for your help.

I just did a clean install of Unreal Gold (GOG version) just to be sure: no texture packs, mods, custom maps, custom inis, no nothing, just the 227i patch, and the stuttering is there.

I ran that WintimeGetTimePrecision1ms with the game, but didn't seem to do anything (what does it do, by the way?).

Setting affinity didn't change anything either (tried -1, 3 and 7 because it's a quad core with hyper threading).

Anything else I could try?

there is some issue with windows timer (which is used in Unreal)- if not being forced it can be up to 12ms, which is not really accurate. Clients are usually not affected if using D3D9 or OpenGL since its forced there for years, but that doesn't count for any other renderer.

I am using Win8.1 on one of my systems as well without any trouble, so I am not sure if Win8 (alone) is to be blamed.

Currently I have not many ideas left...I know NVidia uses specific profiles for games and it seems to mistake Unreal for UT2k4 from what I've seen on my machine (at least for Optimus implementation), maybe it's worth to check this as well, but I very much doubt its the reason.

It seems to be some runtime issue of some kind, whats the memory usage of the client? and did you try to run it as administrator? Please also post a logfile into pastebin to gather more information.

Memory usage is very low on the machine (~10% of total memory)
Here's the log file http://pastebin.com/mgchBSxh but I don't see anything strange.
I guess I'll play the old version with 3dfx emulation.

3dfx: the only true way to play unreal Cheesy I still have my old voodoo 2

By the way: do you think it could be caused by the sound card? Because those drivers are quite nasty and I remember a few years ago having to buy a new sound card because mine made Mass Effect run like crap for some reason.

btw,  how does 227i behave with glide emulation? The same?
one idea I had a few minutes ago too, although not very likely, time to rule it out, with -nosound parameter (can add to link or start up from commandline).
Unfortunately I see nothing suspicious in your log too.
At the moment I am out of ideas too, it surprises me that 226 wouldnt do the same since based on old VC6 while 227i is based on vc2008 compiler which produces much more compatible code for newer OS. Will think some more about it.

-nosound didn't change anything, BUT with glide the stuttering disappears.
Quite surprising

so it seems to be renderer issue in the end after all, since if being an engine problem it should happen in glide s well. At least you can play it then like in 226 Smiley
Usually OpenGL and D3D9 behave pretty well with newer OS and drivers but maybe its indeed "only" a driver problem here. So the usual question, latest drivers installed? Tongue

Yep, latest driver.
I'll see if the integrated GPU (Intel HD3000) has the same problem

Had to get an HDMI cable to do it, but I finally tried the HD3000.
No stuttering, but evident tearing because vsync is disabled.

I'd definitely say it's some strange compatibility issue between the OpenGL and D3D8/9 renderers and the nvidia drivers
