Unreal Tournament OpenGL and low end Textures

hello,

i found a way, to enable OpenGL in Unreal Tournament on my mac G3 (OS 9.2.2). It works great! (UT got OpenGL support on mac, that Unreal dont have)

So i downloaded the "High-res-textures" (low end Version, because my little ibook only got 32MB ATI Radeon video card) and copy everything over to the original "Textures" folder.

After starting, the game shows strange textures... mostly white with some "dots" or "spots" in it.

In preferences, video mode says "Open GL Renderer"... so OpenGL support seems to be enabled.. but what went wrong here?!

Patch 436 for mac is already installed.

So i do have to run an .exe File in the folder with the new textures ( see "6.") ??? And after that the textures are usable?! Hmmm, why so complicated?

Is it not enough, to just overrite the old texture-files and set OpenGL renderer + "UseS3TC=True" in  ut.ini?!

I have no idea what this fix is supposed to do, this seems rather strange to me. Maybe its an updated renderer such as UTGLR because the original OpenGL is rather limited - but need to check this file.

In theory the only thing you have to do then is to replace the textures, everything else is done by the renderer.
Thing is, I assume that this fix is for Windows, so it wouldn't help you anyway.

From what you said I very much assume that the Mac version of the OpenGL renderer is just not capable of handling them correctly and from my knowledge there is no update for it (except maybe compiling one from UTGLR sources).

thank you Smirftsch, for answering quickly.

Ok, i got a windows7-pc also - so executing the .exe file from the link ive posted should work.

I guess, it does some kind of converting to the high-res textures. Maybe i give it a shot... if this .exe just needs an UT textures folder and windows to do its thing.

From what i know, the mac OS 9.2.2 got OpenGL extension set v 1.2.4. - this seems to be the latest version.

I think that "fix" executable is for servers only (fixes the Skating Bots glitch). As for installation, just download the wanted package off the UnrealTexture site, replace your textures, and set UseS3TC to true. Nothing else.

Yea, it probably won't work on Mac. S3TC is a patented technology, anyway. But it will work on your other Windows installation.

Yes the two links given in in your own post are serversided to fix the skating player glitch and on clientside for mapping/editing.


Basically they are the normal textures that come with your game and i put them there to prevent people using the S3TC textures for editing or servers.


The white spots or white/black banding you see ingame point to the fact the renderer isnt handeling the S3TC textures properly. Most important you should set useS3TC to true.


You should expect that while S3TC is a patented technology, it still should also work on a MAC because Epic got the S3TC technology for free to use, unlike other manufacturers.


But it maybe that MAC was excluded, wich would still be odd. This story wont help but i thought it would clear up a few things.


There have been made quite a bunch of patches for UT, but if they include MAC i have no idea but check out this page:

well, its not really odd and they didn't really exclude it. I just checked the sources again to be sure, but neither Unreal's original OpenGL nor UT's OpenGL ever supported S3TC/DXT.
It was just not implemented and the only official and original included renderer which supports it was and is D3D (well, aside S3Metal). I'm not surprised they didn't add it to the Mac OS version. Later Linux versions supported it then (428+) for OpenGL as well I think, but that was probably never ported to Mac as the Linux version wasn't done by Epic from what I remember and there was no connection between the Lin and the Mac version.

For Windows OpenGL only UTGLR and comparable custom renderers are capable of displaying it and due to the lack of public headers for Mac, as mentioned already, hard to build for it.

I know we got used to it so much that this is forgotten very quickly.
