Hello there,
 
today i got my original copy of Unreal from MacSoft (ebay-sale) Wink
 
I did a full install an updated with 224.b1 and 224.b7
 
Started up the game the first time and selected “Rave” (3dfx was greyed out, because I did not have an active 3dfxGlide.lib file in the system-extensions.) for display/grafics.
 
After this procedure, I copied the complete Unreal S3TC low end textures into the
“Textures” folder. (Overwrite every matching files)
 
I started Unreal again and… well most (if not all) of the textures look messy and mixed up
 
After asking my friend google, it showed up with some unreal.ini tweaks, which i did in exactly that way:
 
[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
...
WindowedRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

and

[OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice]
UseS3TC=True
 
 
Now, the game refuses to work, there are error-messages like “Can´t find OpenGL…”, three or four times when starting. Then the game exits.
 
So, what am I missing?
 
My system:
 
Apple iBook G3 800Mhz, 32MB ATI 7500, 640MB RAM
OS: Mac OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.4.11 (dual boot)
 
I got the latest OpenGL for OS 9 installed, version 1.2.1 also the last retail ATI-Drivers.
Google came up with an OpenGL patch for S3TC… but only for x86 machines (.dll file)
 
 
Is there any way to get this cool S3TC textures working on my little iBook?
Or is it just “not possible on ppc”?

Just a wild guess, since i don't own a ppc mac or unreal for osx, but can you find the files opengldrv.dll/opengldrv.int in your unreal/system folder? it could be that the osx version uses its own video driver (rave?)

your guess is right...

there is no opengldrv.dll/.int in my unreal/system folder.

just a Rave.int file.

So, the Textures can´t be used on a Mac, i guess?

kind of funny:

some other games seem to use opengl on my mac, "Shogo" for example... or Falcon 4.0

I can select openGl in the config-Menu and the games are running o.k.

Of course Mac is capable of OpenGL, just that the Mac version of Unreal probably doesn't have support for it.

ah, ok.

So... is there a way to proof, if there is a workaround or another patch, the enables OpenGL support in Unreal for Mac?

Can someone tell for sure? Wink

Like i said, the latest patch installed in my Unreal folder is 224b7...

Would it make sens to put a opengldrv.dll in my unreal/system folder ?! (I would not say it will)

No, Mac doesn't use DLLs, it uses whatever other format it uses. If there really is no OGL renderer for Mac in that version, then there is nothing anyone can do, not you, not the 227 team and, realistically speaking, not even Epic themselves (although giving a Mac release permit wouldn't hurt in this case).

Ok, so no high-res textures for unreal on mac.

But from what i´ve read, UT is another thing...

It should be possible to run in OpenGL on mac (if i not mistaken). I´ll give it a try...

Even more sad, I have a working PowerMac port (think Intel shouldn't cause much trouble also, just don't have one) , with OpenGL, but Epic denied me to release it.

I think that Epic wants to release it to the App Store or something similar. But I don't see why they don't let you release the PPC port, I mean, Apple doesn't even support them anymore. (Besides Rosetta, ofcourse)

that's very unlikely, they didn't show any interest in my work for years. We are abandoned. It's just to old, sad but true.
