UT map DM-Hyper
Apr 19th, 2008 at 11:20am
Print Post
This is a UT map I did with a spaceship theme and low gravity.
Inspiration is obviously from Dm Hyperblast the UT map.

download from here:  http://www.adam.com.au/dougjodie/Dm-Hyper.zip

Enjoy

Hay all .
Anyone tried this map yet ? I would be interested to hear what you think.

Also a quick editor question.
I have been using the Unreal editor for resent mapping with the 227b patch.Since then I installed Unreal Tournament as well.

Both games use the Version 2 editor but the UT install editor will not open (just the splash screen and a "general protection fault"
"History:UEditorEngine::Init <-InitEngine") and maps that I have done previously in the UT install editor will not open in the patched Unreal Version 2 editor.

What is my best solution for being able to edit maps from the two games?

Use different systems. Like 2 computers or 2 partitions with different systems installed would be the cleanest option. Though my new PC won't open anything with UEd so I can use 227 together with UT... But otherwise I would have 227 on another computer and 226 here, and joined with this one.
Actually, that's a registry problem, but you would have to make some edits, and I have no idea which. And it would take long anyway.

Don't know if you realize this, but HyperBlast was previously done for Unreal. It's not a bad job either. It's doesn't have as much eye candy as other builds of it, but the gameplay is OK.

Hmm? Buster, you mean DmHyperblast is actually earlier than DM-HyperBlast? I had DmHyperblast but thought it was a conversion. Still, I prefer DM-HyperBlastII because it has a black hole that adds a very nice touch. And DM-HyperBlast doesn't even look real because of the skybox. Though looking at these screens, it seems more realistic with the vortex there. But the gravity is strange anyway, in reality you would stick to the ground if you fell off an edge, not just drop down to space... Had a map that resembles a round spaceship in Unreal (part of some map pack I think), that is a lot more realistic as the gravity changes according to your location.

Not sure which came first. The file date is May 2002 I think, but there's no readme with it, if I remember correctly.

It could be an Unreal 1 port of the UT map. I think the UT version came first, and the Unreal 1 next. But don't quote me on that one.

What would have been really neat is ... if you jumped off the ship into space it was a very low grav zone that pulled you slowly away from the ship, and that it was also a "toxic" zone that choked/killed you ... (like I did with the very upper part of SaberArena, but without the gravity - made it normal walk instead).

Oh well, eh. Still a very neat map anyways.

I hadn't seen an Unreal version of HyperBlast till now .
The sky box in the Unreal version is different ,it is a lot shorter with ends that come to a point giving a forced perspective that doesn't work very well.
The UT skybox (which is the only thing I copied for my map) is very long compared to its width/hieght and uses one continuous texture down its length giving a natural perspective to the skyzone camera.

With the gravity, well its intended to be a low gravity map and the advantages and disadvantages of that are the same for everybody .The main cargo area is where most of the fighting takes place and a lot of the floor surfaces slope away instead of dropping away keeping your feet on the ground for dodging.
I could change the gravity in the upper control deck and the front bit I suppose, but they are not very big areas.

I like the idea of the toxic zone when jumping across to the escort ship mainly for the choking sounds, but I would change the toxic values to lower settings because it is intended to be an extension of the map for fighting in and not a high risk high reward area.

Not sure if the version Buster posted is an earlier attempt by myself or not. However here is a version done by myself and Bozo that includes all the meshes of the original UT map.

I have compared them both Pitbull and you could be right that Busters link is an earlier version.
They both have the same way of doing the sky box which is different to the UT map.
Your link version is much better in a lot of ways:
The forced perspective in the skybox is less obvious though careful lighting.
When you go though the teleport you don't come out the other end facing the wall.
There is more air control in the low gravity areas.
Textures and lighting are a lot better.

In short if you like the UT map then grab this one.

The link I posted is an earlier one. It's one that I just remembered seeing once, back in 2003. HyperBlast seems to be one of those maps that get redone throughout the entire Unreal series. I think I've seen it for UT200x, too.

Actually the skybox issue is OpenGL issue. If you are using ATI cards. It cannot render too far on opengl.
Oops sorry, I dodn't notice I bumped old thread. And I can't download your map anymore.

I am not talking about hyperblast, I am talking about the map he made, which is inspired by hyperblast.
