MAP

Dm-LSD . . . . Author Eye del Cul . . . . review by Unleaded

The map’s name is DmLSD, of course you might ask does this relate in anyway to the LSD drug? It doesn’t appear to be, and the map isn’t made as if he was on hallucinogens. According to the author it stands for “Lysergic Worlds”

Theme – Space Station or Satellite

Consistency of Theme: 7

Geometry & Build - 5

Build – No errors found.

Geometry - I love the graphic look of the space station (see the pics), but… I don’t like having my only option to either escape or go to the next level be via a very thin bridge to a warp zone. This doesn’t work for me. If someone shoots you with any weapon and your dead in space, knocked off because of the very thin bridge (one of the pics shows this). This gets frustrating and unfun very quick, as I found playing the bots. There needs to be other access routes to the levels. These are my suggestions, 1). Movers from level to level or 2). Space Fluid (as if there was such a thing J) as in DmPyramid where you can go from level to level, either in the middle or the outer rings. This addition will make a huge difference on making the current structure play better. Roof access- the current setup requires the jump boots, and it’s not easy, a mover is preferable, or a few, on the outside of the middle portion that climbs to the top of the structure, that way you don’t mess with jump boots, which rarely go well in most maps. On a competitive note, I’m not a big fan of jump boots, it’s an effect that can never be seen in any way as remotely realistic, especially in DM maps, I much prefer the many other access options – stairs, warp zones, teleporters (visible), movers. I recommend to the people that aren’t great at movers to ask someone they know, for example, many people on the Old Unreal board could help with movers. Texturing - 6

Texture choices- not sure on using the “cement” texture, I don’t hate it but there are better choices, and I don’t think they use much cement in space (I could be wrong). Textures from the Spaceship package would work much better. Scaling- the star textures are not scaled well and they’re extremely cluttered. Texturing on the roof area (top) not given much care. The suns don’t look masked at all. Small item- mapper chose a “rusted” light texture as the source of light, indicating that there’s space rain? I’m not taking off for that just something I noticed. Weapon & Ammo Layout – 6

Not enough ammo, this will make this type of open map extremely unfun. Weapons are easy to spot and reasonable to get to, nice layout for the weapons. I would like to see some goodies centrally located though, a good spot would be in the cracks (the lights) of the middle portion: armor, super, belt. Lighting & Effects- 5

Lighting is sufficient and well lit (which means no bleaching or pitch dark), which will always in itself give an automatic 5 from me. Effects- there aren’t any, there should be at least one awe-inspiring large effect, even if it’s just a rotating piece of the space station. It is pathed, and the pathing seems to work, but of course I’m not sure how the bots would get to the roof, being the jump boots are required and they can’t use them.

Verdict – Needs enhancements, version update

Category – Space maps

Ideal number of players – 4 to 8

Tech Review – C-rated, higher potential with suggested enhancements

Play Review – Doesn’t play well (see above). Bot match seems to run fine (but I did not test this extensively)

Special Highlights/Effects – None, this map needs at least one large one.

Level of Mapping Skills shown – Semi-Intermediate

Advice -

- Is listed above in the review.

Summary – the main structure is a great starting concept, it has a very nice design; it just needs both better play support and improved texturing.
