[227] master.oldunreal.com does not respond

I'm unable to query this master server (master.oldunreal.com)

Is it still in use? If not, please remove it from the default config of Unreal 227 servers and clients to avoid timeouts and unneccesary connection attempts.

I assumed it to be, but didn't check in the last time, to busy with 227g...

IIRC that's the same one that crashes Unreal on Linux, so I'd say something's up with it. I can ping it OK, though.

Sorry the master server is down.  There was a power outage some time ago at my house and I haven't been home to be able to turn the server comp back on.  I'll do it asap however, and let you know when it's back.

To my knowledge master.oldunreal.com was not maintained most of the time since 227f was released. :-? It sure does not seem reliable lately because almost every time I played in the past few months I would get query timeouts from it.

That's not good. Master servers need to be reliable.

TheNerdNetwork.net and GameSpy have been reliable over the past years, although GameSpy has had some downtime. But overall they've been doing fine.

About the OldUnreal backup master server: "A false sense of security (backup) is worse than true insecurity"

I agree 100% with both posts above me.  Bluntly speaking, timing a bunch of people out who query a master server because some kid doesn't feel the need to host reliably is not my idea of a true Unreal patch.

What an absurd comment, how can you compare the patch with the masterserver?

Besides, its not unmaintained, it never was, its just some home server, with all problems related to it- and thats because all my other chances and servers were suddenly gone, including TNNs, really sorry that I can't afford paying one.
Of course the idea is to have a stable reliable server, but don't complain about the attempt, sometimes things just don't work out as wanted.

What happened with SA? The administrator of an SA server originally volunteered to run it. When it was hosted there is was fairly reliable.

Shivaxi has been euthusiastic about hosting services and special game servers for the community. Perhaps he can save up for a decent UPS, and some remote restart control to improve his service. ;)

gone, gone, gone...
I can also speak maybe with Rewind, he is hosting the gameserver for Oldunreal at the moment, but his machine is pretty much at limits from what I got.
But in the last time I fully concentrated on 227g and my health is limiting me badly also. I didnt even make it to set up the gameserver correctly, not speaking about playing. If not for Pitbull and Rewind it probably wouldnt be set up at all yet....

Oh give Shivaxi a break about not being reliable. AFAIK hes had it up for months, and its only gone down because we had a huge storm up here that tore up everything (I'm about an hour away from him). Otherwise, hes doing a fine job hosting it. I mean I suppose it would be better to get it back on somehow, but that's easy. Just explain to the residents of the house where the server computer is at how to start it up and all, and ask them if they could please do it after the power blinks / goes out. It isn't a huge debate, just simple as that.

@ Jackass:  Smirf really meant to say "Go F*ck yourself"

@ Zombie:  Yes I did try something like that, and it's supposed to turn on automatically once power comes back on...or even if like you plug it into an outlet...should just auto pop on...I'll have to work on that.

@ Matrix:  Usually someone does.  Family matters are making that difficult right now though.

@ Everyone else:  Master server is up again.  With a stroke of luck I was able to get it running once more.  Thank you for your patience and cooperation. :P

This master is back online, and it is queryable again.

Oh, and I've been running an sort-of experimental master server at my home server. You can test it via hyper.dnsalias.net as master server address.

Mine has a UPS to survive short power outages. But it still a home server. Running Windows. Windows needs updates, updates need reboots. For the rest it runs quite fine for years now.

Hmm....idea here...would it be possible to have multiple master servers of the same address?  So like have more then 1 person running Master.Oldunreal.com?  That way if 1 goes down...there's always a backup.  Don't know if this is even possible or not...

The program solves the address and converts it into a unique IP and tries to connect to the specified port, so unless you can get it to resolve the address to a different IP, there is no way, and you definitely can't connect to who masters with one address at the same time.

Nah... basically just disable all services, close all MS ports and you're good. I've been running Windows NT4 / 2000 and other "old" servers for several years without ever updating anything. Stable as linux, no malware, no viri, no crashes/BSODs... nothing, one of them even ran almost a year without reboot until the power went out in the house. If you are running untrustworthy network programs run them with a restricted user... simple.
