Server difficulties

Hello, I am kinda a noob at making a server but wish to make one to play with friends and such. However, it seems my attempts at making it has been futile so far, with people telling me that they are not able to find my server (I even tried a Darkmatch where I would be the only server  and tried restarting the game to refresh the servers).

I clicked the check on Advertise Server and unchecked the LAN one. I have a router but opened ports 7777, 7778, 7779, 27900, and 27500. I updated my game to version 227h (excited for i). From everything I have seen on the internet I should be fine, yet can't see the friends server or my own (well, we can see our own in lan, but you know what I mean). Hopefully this narrowed down the list of issues... any ideas what the problem could be?

make sure DoBeacon=True under (networking > serverbeacon)
and
douplink=true (networking > masteruplink) are set to true in advanced options if they are not already.

also i believe masterserver is on port 27900 not 27800 unless i have it setup to something custom and dont know it. so make sure thats fowarded as well thats important.

Dobeacon and Douplink are both set to true...

Also, my mistake with the port. It was 27900, I was writing it from memory and remembered all the others find but offset this number by one. Each one has the start port and end port the same I am assuming.

Reading right out of my port list it is - 7777,7778,7779,27900,27500.

Thanks for the attempt. Too bad none of them were the problem :(.

I personally recommend forwarding 7777-7790 to cover uplink actors being weird. forwarding 27900/27500 is not necessary

Checked your Firewall for blocks? Also I set under Advanced Options - Server Beacon BeaconPort to 7778 and ServerBeaconPort to 7779, for some reason the default one didn't work for me. Maybe it does the same for you.

Seems that everyone eventually wants an unreal server for some reason. To test maps on or just to run a Lan game to play friends or family. I will always help someone who wants to get a server running and spend many hours debugging and helping. So why not make it easier since people will do this anyway. This is set up as a DM server but can run Uteam or Coop or any of its mutators, including monstermash or INF.

First you must have an Unreal One cd. Epic files are not included in this install. You must do a clean install of unreal and apply the 225 patch found in our download section. This new install should run and at this point dont worry about setting it up. Just make sure it runs.

You then install this quickserver install found in this post. This will install files over the top of your new 225 install. This will be a dedicated 225 Uteam10G server, setup for Pure KOTH, or a JZ coop server depending on which one you install.

I have installed the pip skins, fixed big khuna skins, flexmaps, kickban and Nepthys Lite. It also includes Sniperparadises server add mod.

There is a beginning maps package installed with flex maps to get you going hopefully easy.

After the install navigate to the unreal folder and you will notice an Unreal Icon inside the folder. Clicking this Icon will start a dedicated server and an Unreal icon will appear in your task bar. (The start command is also in a text document in the unreal folder). You can right click on this task bar icon, once you have launched the server, to set options for the server or to see the server console. It doesnt take much of a computer to run this dedicated server. I have ran them on celeron 500s quite easily. I do not suggest you run the server and play on the same computer if others are going to play.

This is set to do uplinks to the master server and will do so if you dont change it. The manuals explaining uteam and the other mods will be found in the help folder in the unreal folder. If it doesnt show on the server list, its most likely you or your router and not this server. I would suggest setting the uplink and server beacons to off in the unreal.ini file while you customize your server and fine tune the settings. I have set an admin password but you but will have to dig in the advanced options for it.

Read the manuals in the help folder they are very smart and written by people much more savy than me.

You may delete the uninstall program from unreal found in the folder.

Good luck, have fun.

Sparky
Ps map rotation is at a rate of one minute for each map for testing purpose,, read the manuals In the HELP FOLDER!

This could be updated after it runs for 227.

My advice, don't use gold, find unreal one on ebay or amazon.

I followed Casey's and Age's advice to open ports 7777-7790. I also followed bleeder's advice and changed the settings to those specified. Right now it can't be tested, but I will respond later telling how it worked out. Let's hope for the best! Thanks everyone for the advice, hopefully it works.

Thanks Oldsparky for the post, but the thing is I want a vanilla gameplay and not special gametypes. Plus I don't want a dedicated as I want to play as well. If this doesn't work I might use that as a template howeve, so I will keep it in mind.

You can play yourself on a dedicated server just fine, simply open a new client. Most of the time that's even preferable, as any possible client crashes won't affect the server.

Huh, never would have guessed you could have had 2 clients open. Only problem is that I can't even find my own server in the Darkmatch panel or LAN (I can see my server in LAN if I start a non-dedicated server, which I understand is normal from reading other topics on this forum).

And.... nothing. I can't even see my own server anymore. Anyone else trying to connect via LAN fail in their attempts as well as they can't see it.

I don't have any firewalls on my computer (all deactivated). However, going to that website linked by Age shows that my ports are still not opened even after opening them in my router. Ugh, any more ideas?

I've had an antivirus cause this before. Windows firewall is another one. I know you said that you don't have any firewalls up but this is the only thing I can see causing this issue short of actual hardware in the connection path stopping it (switches, routers..)

If the site says you don't have them forwarded then that's clearly why your server is invisible to the master server. The pain is figuring out what is blocking it...

That portchecker website dosnt seem to be reliable
i just checked my own (i have half the spectrem fowarded) and it says its closed everywhere, I checked a few  random servers ip = port from the server browser and it  says it closed as well.

you may try to see if using a dmz  shows any differnt  results , or  reset / power cycle your router(s)  or reconfigue it from scrath  also make sue there arnt other routers in the chain and your only configurig a one that's attached to the wan ( incase your using  routers as hubs/range boosters)

also it was brought up before , but there is also the slim chance that your isp is blockig those ports ( very rare) in that case you may try another port range

Pcube - My windows firewall is deactivated. Has been since day one, I made sure of it. Course I just realized I was stupid enough to leave my antivirus firewall on when I planned to test it last time... if this was it I really feel like an idiot. I will test it tomorrow without that firewall on.

IsUnreal - Glad to know that it wasn't my end and that those ports could be open. My isp is comcast, pretty common so I doubt that is it. Plus what port range would I try. I tried resetting my router to no avail. There are not other routers in the chain (I have it sitting in the middle of my room, a wireless connection).  Also I am running a demilitarized zone.

So, we will see tomorrow if I have made people continue pondering for the stupidest thing ever. I knew my antivirus had a firewall and yet forgot to turn it off during that last test. In the meantime I am open to other suggestions in case it turns out it wasn't just a stupid firewall.

Also, this makes no sense, but I can only find my server in all servers now. I can run a dedicated though :).

If it shows up in all servers but not the specific server tab then there's one of two things happening here

1) your gametype has the wrong game name so it won't show up in the tab you want
2) the int for the gametype is missing or the int is like problem number 1 where it's got the wrong information

Well, it shows DarkMatch when I look at the gametype for my dedicated server. So I assume the problem is 2? Well I have UnrealI and the gameclass says UnrealI.DarkMatch. This isn't just an issue with 227h? It works fine in King of the Hill luckily (Also under the same gameclass, UnrealI), so I guess it is something to do specifically with Darkmatches.

[DarkMatch]
ClassCaption="Dark match"
GameName="DarkMatch"

Looks okay in UnrealI.int. or am I wrong?
