Hello, been a long time, since I got my new PC built I haven't done a whole lot with unreal for awhile, but boredom struck and.........lets just say boredom is a very powerful tool....
I opened up the Unreal 97 editor and looked at the models for a bit.....thinking of ways to get these out (what am I thinking, there IS no way to get them out) But then I looked at the Polygons mode for a second and thats when it hit me....
I took a top down snapshot of the firefly for starters, added red dots to mark each vertex, and loaded it into blender. After a few minutes the final result was such:
I then decided to take upon something more complex, and I did the blob......to my surprise it not only came out well, it looks almost identical to the blob from the actual unreal 97 alpha
The only oddity I can point out is the way the tentacle is mapped, but aside from that its very close. This leaves me sitting with one thing and one thing only in my sights......I'm sure I don't have to explain myself past this point
Stay tuned for more updates

Well yes, very nice. Do you intend to do all the models? Any integration to U227 planned ?

yes, the dragon is currently being worked on (As well as UV fixes of current models to match the old skins, the krall has been done and the bigman is having some issues with milkshape)
As far as coding goes, I have no plans for anything yet but chances are it will be compatible with all versions of unreal, unless 225 rejects something like this Lol

Also, If I can adapt the technique I'm using with the images well enough, its possible I could improvise/remake some of the old unreal95 content (somebody say gargoyle? )

The Bigman UV's have been reworked, 3 skin variants were made
1. Big Man '97 (Original seen in the alpha)
2. Big Man 2 (I've noticed some screenshots of the big man showed a darker skin with more vibrant eyes, so I did this as well)
3. Big Man '96 (Anyone remember this guy? Yeah its a bit crappy and not nearly exact, I'll improve on it but I had to give this variant some attention too)
Dragon is next in line

@Hyzoran: I'm not too sure how, it just opens for me essentially, but I can't open any packages/maps and opening the editor itself causes windows to have a seizure for awhile before opening it, same goes with opening the mesh viewer
What version of 7 are you using? I'm currently running Win7 Home Premium x64

Looks pretty quality, but what about animations?
I guess you could try re-binding them to the .3d_a although I don't know if it's possible or not as I haven't tried that.

I give you............the dragon (insert various HammerFall chanting here ->
This one was by far the hardest one to recreate and surprisingly not because of the model itself, but because of the UV mapping. This was however one of the most fun to do. Opinions and feedback as always are extremely helpful
As for animations, those will be done after all models are done (Woman, possibly garygoyle? I'm at least giving that one a shot) They will either be, in the case of the woman and dragon, be based off current animations in a similar fashion to the Quake remakes, and just thinking of my own after that (UNBIBLE.RTF states some of the anims it was supposed to have)
The red dragon (the other half we don't have at least) will be done at a later time, up next is the woman

Color me impressed! They are spitting images of the originals! And, no coding exists for the creatures in question, most were unanimated (blob for example) aside from the import code. Looking at the bug eyed BigMan, it seems like some of him went into GasBag instead. I suppose for the most of it, animation wise, it'll be from imagination, no?
It's not done yet, but once I have enough stuff done for something much bigger, then I will release a new version
Dragon animations were done from pure improvisation, as well as all the other creatures that ill be doing

I'm really gonna need some feedback and ideas, anything that helps the outcome for what I'm about to do next, since I'm really left in the dark as I only have 1 image to go from
This is a bit of the head that I got done for the Gargoyle, i still have to add the bit with the teeth and on top of that, do a skin almost from scratch for it

Sorry to hijack your thread, matey. I believe this is related.
Thorough examination of the X-COM archives we received revealed a bit more than what's previously been seen.
1. There is an August 97 map having some weapons myleveled that doesn't work with any beta available, but Leo's hexy magic tricks revealed some of the stuff contained in the mapfile.
2. There is a couple 96-97 era textures, including one package, SBase, that was in the Unreal97 monster preview.
3. There is an EULA for Unreal alpha stashed someplace.
Rejoice. And remember: this isn't madness! This is CHRISTMAS!

Are you remaking everything that's in the UnBible that wasn't in the game?
Here's a list
Weapons:
Impaler (pretty sure the projectile is in the beta editor)
Stunner
FlameThrower (guessing this would be the model of mercenary's gun since it was meant to be their weapon)
Inventory:
Darkflares
Asbestos-boots
Chameleon's Heart (invisibility with different mesh?)
Motion Detector
Artifacts (mesh/textures is in beta editor)
Caffine/Stimpack
Monsters:
Humanoid (always thought these were the hidden male skins my best bet is the male1 with masks but then again it could've be some weird alien)
Robots and droids
And the transmutation platforms sound like a pretty neat idea

Flamethrower is most definitely related to GES BioRifle, in the books it was described as using flammable tarydium sludge...

Are you using morph target animation in blender? Just for you to know, that's another word for per-vertex animation, and this is the technique used for animation in U1 and UT99 (until build 432 - skeletal animation was first implemented into Unreal Engine in that build)

Howdy,
I've been traulling the web for any of the Unreal models to use in my Legacy mod. I found a link on the Epic forums that lead me here!
It's great to see someone has attempted to bring the old models into Blender for use in the newer engines!
Any chance I can loo into possibly using some of your models in my UT3 mod Legacy? (I'll create a thread on these forums regarding the mod)
