Gamepad tips?

Good evening OldUnreal!

Looking to get all nostalgic up in this thing, so I've booted up Unreal. Being a gaming snob, I prefer my games with a gamepad. I'm using Unreal Gold with the 227 patch (thanks, by the way), and a wireless Xbox 360 pad.

After fiddling with the settings I could find (Enable Joystick, DirectInput, and Enable Mouselook), I'm having these problems:
  • My right stick doesn't give full look control - just horizontal, can't look vertically.
  • My triggers (RT and LT) don't seem to function at all.
Does anyone have any tips for setting this up?

(As an aside, using the search function here on the forum turned up no results for any gamepad-related search terms, but googling brought up two different topics plastered with gamepad talk. Odd, no?)

I was pretty sure 227h worked instantly with modern age joypads (atleast i was sure that up/down look issue was solved)

either way, getting your joypad to work is just a matter of tweaking afew things in your user.ini... although i don't remember which settings, from the top of my head the lines JOYX,Y,R,U,V corresponded to the 360 controller.

The LT and RT triggers are another story though, if i recall they're analog input and therefore you cannot bind actuall stuff to them, only movement/look/throttle related stuff.

Either way i'll check when i'm at my parents home, i used to play unreal with a 360 controller there and had it set up nicely.

Thanks for the tip! You were correct - it was fixed by moving the JoyV command to JoyR.

Shame about the triggers. I've gotten around it for the time being with XPadder, but it's a shame they can't be used natively. Maybe it's something to add to a future 227 revision?

Thanks again!

[edit] Actually, XPadder doesn't seem to work for this. It's an outside program which allows mapping of keyboard keys to gamepad buttons. I've got each trigger bound to a mouse button, and it works fine out-of-game, but in-game it doesn't detect it at all (with any button and key remap). Is it blocked somehow by anti-cheat stuff?

You could try Masahiko Morii's drivers for your 360 controller.
His web page seems to be gone:
http://www.katch.ne.jp/~morii/
..but you should be able to find his drivers elsewhere on the internet.
He made both wired and wireless 360 controller drivers for all Windows versions.

Nope.

Code: Select all

if(Game.bIsPlatformer || Game.bIsFighter || Game.bIs2dSideScrolling || Game.bIsRPG)//todo handle racing games, not like I like those anyway
     return CNTRL_Gamepad;
else return CNTRL_Mouse_and_Keyboard

if having a working solution, I'd be happy for an update with information for the wiki :)

After a great deal of fiddling, I've not found any other fixed for the various problems.

I eventually found the unofficial drivers suggested by Tomaso here (hooray for Google translate!), but unfortunately the system tray utility doesn't actually show, despite it's presence in my processes list. It's meant to allow me to remap the triggers to regular buttons, though, so it's worth testing if anyone can get the utility running (and has a 360 pad). It certainly installs fine and the pad is fully functional at default with those drivers.

A third issue has arose, but it's minor: movement with the analogue stick merely changes your characters acceleration, rather than actual speed. Hence, you cannot walk with the sticks, and you can often overshoot your target when trying to stop. It's not a massive issue, obviously, but it's jarring if you're used to other FPS games. It's also certainly not something I could fix, but something to consider for future patches.

[OT] As for snobbery: I tend to look at it conceptually. Playing with a specifically crafted device must surely be connoisseurial compared to the multi-purpose mouse and keyboard.

I see you found a thesaurus, yet managed to used the word you used word incorrectly.

Finding that a device not meant to do a specific task that is in fact superior to one specifically designed for it is something a connoisseur would do. Have a brief history lesson :

People used to say the mouse was a tool, not to be confused with these "games" that only fools played, but when people kept getting destroyed by them over their limited by comparison gamepads and keyboard-only controls, they quickly realized the value of them.

Also, after checking the crap behavior of the joystick for movement speed, there is probably no way to fix this without massive online desyncs, or at all with the current codebase.

Spoiler alert:

Unreal was not designed to work like Call of Bullshit.

@Casey: You're being awfully aggressive, Casey. I don't even like Call of Duty much - but even then, it was a flyaway comment for humours sake, rather than a genuine criticism of keyboards and mice. It's perfectly understandable to want to play an old game relaxed on the couch rather than perched at my desk. Reasonable conversation is a favourite pastime of mine.

@Pitbull: Hello! Happy to see the forum here alive and well. Read through some of my old posts (and my Usermaps reviews...) to find myself suitably embarrassed at my pre-adolescent behaviour. I don't know how you folk put up with me.
