Unreal Gold won't full-screen.

Post by Vulpine-Vixen »

I've just installed Unreal Gold, patching it up to 226, started the game... but it won't full-screen. Everytime I go to change that option the screen goes black for a second, the game then returns, still windowed, and there's no sound!

Is this a common problem? Can I force it into fullscreen by editing a config file...? Would the 227 patch fix this?

Why not trying? For 227 you can at least expect support. I mean why sticking to this old buggy garbage anyway?

I shall install 227. I've only just come back to the forums as I got a new machine from when I signed up and I've only just got around to re-installing the game.

Though I shall be reading what this patch is, does, etc before I install it. I make a general rule of not installing anything 'blind' so to speak, or without scan reading an EULA as I like to be informed as to what I am getting with software/patches/updates etc.

I posted on the off chance that this problem was a general one and that it was easily fix.

Nothing wrong about that, but seriously
227 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> epics "official" stuff. We are not speaking of possible maleware here. So in this case, nothing to worry about 227.
I mean you possible know about EA and origin or epics abuse of the make something unreal contest. All those big companies went downhill but here its not even about money. Nowadays you can trust fan made stuff way more than your prefered game developer (at least in most cases)
Oh well, hoping Smirf will not start crying after reading my post.

I am aware of Origin and refuse to use it. I bought my partner a hard copy of Alice: Madness Returns And while it states it needs only one activation, that's false as it needs 2, and there's also no statement on the box that you need Origin. I do use Steam though; I know a lot of people have the same kinds of issues with Steam and Valve as they do EA and Origin.

I don't, as a general rule, trust software unless I have done my research as to what it is. I have found some rather nice 'free' software in the past that isn't as 'free' as it sounds. EG looking at cookies, in game advertising, IP tracing and so on. I am a fan of OpenSource software but even then you still need to read as to what you're downloading as you may not have everything you need installed. EG Blender needs Python.

I get that the 227 patch was developed with approval; that still doesn't mean that I won't want to know what it is just because it's approved. I consider it informed to know what it is, where it came from etc. Isn't it common sense to do that?

I've read the wiki and so on and tried to install the patch but as it stands the installer is refusting to install. So my problem is no more fixed than it was when I first posted.

guess we need some more information about why it is refusing to install :) - any messages, logs, etc?

But you at least have Win XP, do you? Too old OS like Win 98 are not supported, they are just... too old.

Well after trying to install the game on Windows 3.1 I gave up and decided it made more sense to install it into Windows7. I jest, I jest... I'm not stupid enough to try and install things onto an un-supported operating system. Smirftsch may not cry after reading your posts but I might... LOL. Although that's a little mean to me, you have take time out to try and help me.

It turns out that the fullscreen issue was down to the rendering engine the game was using. It was being software rendered but now it's Direct3D. For some reason my graphics card/computer doesn't like OpenGL, if I try to render the game using that the game doesn't even launch. So that's that problem sorted.

As for the patch it still won't install. At first it was crashing each time I tried to install it so so I re-started my machine and tried again.

After that the installer finds where Unreal is by default but the error I get is 'Unreal Gold/Unreal Anthology can't be updated in this folder. The update requires Unreal to be installed in the folder first. Please locate the existing folder for Unreal, or exit and install it now.'

Even trying to locate the game myself doesn't make a difference.

The game patched to the 226 Unreal Gold patch perfectly fine.

that message just means that some files are not found, the installer checks for various files in the specified folder (and subfolders), such as sytem files, maps and textures. Did you modify the base installation in some way?
We had some reports also about some issues with UnrealGold installations which were based on Unreal+RTNP instead of UnrealGold installs, is that maybe the case for you?
Check if the
System files are in (also UPak.dll and UPak.u): Unreal/System
Textures are in: Unreal/Textures
Maps are in : Unreal/Maps
UPak Maps : Unreal/Maps/UPak

for the Gold installation.

The game patched to the 226 Unreal Gold patch perfectly fine.
I suspect you actually patched to 226f, and not 226b.. mostly because you can't patch to 226b.

The Unreal gold disc retail disc needs no patching as it comes on 226b. 226f is an abomination and should never had been made. It causes horrible problems and net incompatibility which to this day still plagues unreal. That, and 226f was not meant for gold installs, it's meant for standard installs.
