Host a server without router
How does this procedure go actually? I mean, i used to have a router, but since we got new internet our router was put away, all we have left now is a modem. how to do the port thingie (if needed), since a server runs on a port.

Re: Host a server without router
usually modems don't contain any firewall and also there is only one computer connected, so no further setup should be needed from this side.

Re: Host a server without router
Most DSL companys now a days use modem/routers. If your modem does in fact have a built in router you will need to forward the appropriate ports. If you plan on using a router with such a modem/router the best method is to put the modem in "bridge" mode and then forward ports via the router.

Re: Host a server without router
Hm kay, sorry for the late reply, but ive been doing some research at this issue myself, plus i was gone this weekend. But i do NOT have an inbuild router in my modem, i enabled the server in the firewall exeptions list, but yet it wont appear. The servers are for Serious Sam not Unreal, so maybe this has to be re-placed to the Anything Else section not sure. Anyways, are there any other issues that might prevent you from hosting servers with a modem-only internet connection??

Your ISP might actually directly block it.

Traitor! Burn him! BURRN HIM!!!The servers are for Serious Sam not Unreal
well, I'd try first if the server can be joined nevertheless from the outside via IP, to see if its a problem with the game or the gamebrowser (if this works any similar to Unreal)

Re: Host a server without router
Call them up and ask if port range X is blocked, and ask them to unblock it. If they won't comply, ask for a different port range. If they still won't comply.. well.. I don't know if threatening to change ISPs works in countries other than the USA.

Re: Host a server without router
This doesnt seem to be the problem.. argh.. So i'm still stuck with no servers. I've had this before, you cant see the servers, but on lan i can join by typing the IP adres. So, any other suggestions? Or other possible problems that can prevent you from hosting servers on a Modem only?

I have no idea. Serious sam is too different for me to really offer any suggestions.

Re: Host a server without router
does it have a LAN browser and doesn't it show up there too? If so, I'd still assume some Firewall problem, maybe blocking the beacon ports.

Re: Host a server without router
Yea, it does not show up in lan, but i can join LAN by typing the IP adress. I have the same problem with Unreal servers.
EDIT: i did this before, with firewall, but that was a couple of years back, and in Win XP, i now have 7.
i completely forgot how to undo the blockage, any ideas?

Re: Host a server without router
did you read http://www.oldunreal.com/UnrealReferenc ... oughts.htm
?
Also for Firewall, go to Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings
or try to disable it temporarily at first to check if this is really the problem.

I figured it had a built in router. Glad you got it working.
