Playing Old Unreal Online

Hey, a buddy and I decided to install our Old unreal games, patch em and play them against each other. Only one question, how do we enter each others servers? I mean, if I start a game, how would he find me and vice versa. I played Unreal via lan or via Gamespy many times before, but I've never started my own server to play online. Is there any additional software that I'd need to be able to start an Unreal game to play online?

If you patch up to 227h you can play with eachother. The server browser will show player names who are in the server, all you need to do is sort by # of players and try to find eachother by the names you use in game. There are plenty of empty DM/coop servers for you to use, you don't have to start your own if you don't want to.

Be aware that there are also 1v1 servers for deathmatch so you can just play with eachother as well.

Hosting your own server is a slight bit more complicated, and there are plenty of guides out on the internet for it.

What version of Unreal do you have? It may not be necessary to patch up to 227h. You could also patch to 224v, 225f, or 226f as well as 227h. The links to these files can be found here: patches

Though, you may not even have to update at all, either, if you don't want to. Do you know what patch you are currently running?

My friend and I are currently using version 2.26. The reason I want to start my own server is I have my own personalized maps I made eons ago that I'd like to play in. I gave him these maps so that shouldn't be a problem. My problem is, how will he find my server?

especially 226 has a lot of bugs in replication, it's definitely the worst choice to run a server with. One of the major reasons for 227...

Also, if your question is simply how your friend can locate the server, it's as easy as going to "find internet games" if you're using gold (escape -> multiplayer -> find internet games to launch the browser). If you're not using uwindow (you hit escape and it brings up a vertical background of bricks with menu options on it) just select multiplayer, find internet games...

If your server is not showing up in the master server list, but you don't really care about advertising it and just want to play, you can always just give your friend your IP. They can then use the Open command as such: Open YourIPHere (i.e. open 127.0.0.1 if connecting to the loopback). Open establishes a direct connection and thus it is not a problem if your server doesn't show up online.

As Smirf has said, 226f has a lot of serious issues and it would be in your interest to patch up to 227h. 227b (Gold) is not nearly as bad as 226f, though.

I have to say, having read both those links, I'm now more confused then ever. My friend and I have upgraded to Unreal 2.27F and are able to see other serves online in the mulitiplayer option. However, when I want to start a server I can't seem to select whether I want it to be Lan or online. Also, I can't select how many players I want there to be in the map or what I want the "Game" Name to be. How do I do all this? Oh and we still can't find each other.

Is it possible for someone to possibly guide me via msn or something if I were to PM them my MSN address?
