Jackrabbit and I (of the UDHQ Dev Team) have been working on a new map for Unreal that is compatible across all versions - Super Mario 64's Lethal Lava Land!

For those of you not familiar with SM64, (.. how?!) it's a platformer inspired map set in a vast sea of lava. Highlights of the map include the log rolling area, the central volcano and automated sliding bowser puzzle. Images can be found below:

The outer area is essentially complete, geometrically, but the map will not be up for download yet as Jackrabbit is currently working on the volcano's interior and modeling the bully/goomba enemies that will be present in the map's final release. You can check the map out, however, on the UDHQ Unreal Server (I'll try to keep it up as much as possible).

It would be nice if you didn't keep the lighting and geometry at SM64 levels. Now is not the days of N64, after all.

Well... That's the point. It's supposed to give you a nostalgic feeling and intense gameplay, not awe you with graphics. Also, if you're familiar with the level firsthand then you will notice that this is a conversion with some artistic license... so if you don't like the geometry then that would be Nintendo's fault. :P

Well, they tried fixing it in Super Mario 64 DS. And failed for the most part. The thing is, at least for me, things like SMB1 graphics are nostalgic - all those colours and pixels look oldschool, but still pretty good, while SM64 is simply bad with all the low polyness. SMB1 is like comparing an icon to a high resolution screenshot, while SM64 is like comparing a 10% quality JPEG image of a high resolution screenshot with a lossless high resolution screenshot...
