Original unreal (226f), OpenGL and nvidia 6150 = crash on startup

I have the original unreal, genuine CD from the day it was first released. I used to have the voodoo2 sli setup and it worked great.

I've since sold the voodoo2 cards some years ago and was trying to set up unreal on my son's PC. This initially worked in software only graphics mode.

It's been updated to the latest 226f patch, and now works in direct3d mode, but not OpenGL. I've never been keen on the direct3d for unreal as it feels a bit washed out.

OpenGL crashes on startup there's the splash screen then straight back to desktop. It has a current video driver, although the card is newer than the last patch by a few years,  I doubt the latest latest driver will matter as other OpenGL games work. Here's the last part of the log:

Code: Select all

Init: Using pixel format 9
Init: glGetString(GL_VENDOR): NVIDIA Corporation
Init: glGetString(GL_RENDERER): GeForce 6150 LE/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
Init: glGetString(GL_VERSION): 2.1.2
Init: glGetString(GL_EXTENSIONS): GL_ARB_color_buffer_float GL_ARB_depth_texture GL_ARB_draw_buffers GL_ARB_fragment_program GL_ARB_fragment_program_shadow GL_ARB_fragment_shader GL_ARB_half_float_pixel GL_ARB_imaging GL_ARB_multisample GL_ARB_multitexture GL_ARB_occlusion_query GL_ARB_pixel_buffer_object GL_ARB_point_parameters GL_ARB_point_sprite GL_ARB_shadow GL_ARB_shader_objects GL_ARB_shading_language_100 GL_ARB_texture_border_clamp GL_ARB_texture_compression GL_ARB_texture_cube_map GL_ARB_texture_env_add GL_ARB_texture_env_combine GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 GL_ARB_texture_float GL_ARB_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_ARB_texture_non_power_of_two GL_ARB_texture_rectangle GL_ARB_transpose_matrix GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_ARB_vertex_program GL_ARB_vertex_shader GL_ARB_window_pos GL_
It seems to cut off before the last GL_ parameter. Anyone know what's up?

Try the 227H patch (see downloads here at oldunreal).

Or, if you for some unimaginable reason don't want to use 227, download the OMP.

The original OpenGL became unusable with mostly any video card at the time of 224 if I recall correctly.
You either have to use the OMP which provides a fixed OpenGL or indeed move on to 227.

I'm downloading 227h and I'll try that.

I thought the 226f version was the last official OMP, and the info guide on here says it works well with direct3d (which it does) and recommends OpenGL.

Well, 227h runs with opengl.... but at around 4 frames per second. It's faster under software rendering, the small window view when in the advanced options is so smooth.

The same machine runs original unrealtournament at a blinding speed under OpenGL.

There are now lot (and lots) of options in the OpenGL section. Are there any usual suspect in slow frame rate?

Firstly, make sure you have pawn and decoration shadows either disabled or low resolution. That option eats performance for lunch.

the 6150 is supposed to also support directx9, i wonder if you try changing to directx if you would see any improvement?

Yes, as GreatEmerald said, check the options for the shadows. On low end systems I'd even suggest to us low res if not turning them off - which would be pretty much the same as UT then, because UT doesn't have these shadows at all (I think I placed now a dozen of warnings all around the place here about that ;))

OpenGL settings shouldn't influence it so much, except of course the usual things like AA for example.

Everything turned off and it's still dog slow. Direct3D it is then.

The 227h verion has 3 versions of Direct3D, version 8 and 9 are also a bit slow, the no version one seems fast enough.

The one without versioning is D3D7. Its quite strange that this is running faster, D3D8/9 and OpenGL are way better optimized and in none of my testsystems old D3D7 was as fast or even faster. Sure your drivers for the graphics card are up to date? Although Unreal itself is kinda old, the renderers need recent drivers due to the updates in them.
