Writing an installation manual

Post by DieHard SCWS »

I am still working on the installation manuals for the S3TC textures, and today i bought UnrealGold from GOG and so far a failed attempt to get the UnrealGold from Steam.

For Steam i can already conclude they have awsome communication lines  :-? ::) :-? ::) :-? >:( >:(

For GOG all went fine untill i wanted the logos that can be downloaded from their site at this page: http://www.gog.com/en/spreadtheword

I downloaded logo.zip which is corrupted using winZip version 7.0, than i downloaded banners_and_userbars.zip and trying WinZip version 7.0 the file is corrupt. When using WinRar version 3.00 beta3 it unpacks, but gives me a file named banners_and_userbars with no filetype extention. After trying .jpg .bmp for the heck i tried .zip and voila it lets itself unpack flawless with Winzip 7.0 and  WinRar version 3.00 beta3.

Before i make a complain, do you guys get the same results? Or is it because i use crappy old versions from WinZip and WinRar?

Remark 1:
Yes i am not gonna update my WinRar and WinZip programs because i use them to pack all the files for the sites and I need old versions just to make sure any old and newer version can unpack them.

Remark 2:
Aside great communicationlines on Steam they dont even seem to offer their logo for download.........

Steam has multiple content hosting servers around the world, and it's common during high-traffic times that one or two doesn't work very well. Normally I switch my download location to czech republic or new zealand if I have troubles downloading something

The problem is otherwise, i cant even login into my account. And you need your account to be able to contact helpdesk, so its the chicken/egg, egg/chicken problem. On top of that they introduced Captcha for the logins and this particular version is almost impossible to read. And even if i do find one that is readable after some 8 to 10 refresh Captcha and i type over what it says, than it keeps telling me the Captha is wrong.

Than all mails sent to my ISP doesnt arive, either its blocked by Steam or my ISP is blocking Steam no clue which one it is. Which means i cant create a new account because i dont receive the conformation mails and even if i do i cant fill in the Captcha conformation.

I understand, being an admin myself you want to block out spam, but not in such a manner it makes a cleint impossible to contact the helpdesk let alone they make it impossible to buy a game i want.

If it wasnt for the fact i need both versions from both companies i would have stuck with GOG. At least they have open lines where you simply can fill in a complaint on the website without passwords, logins, Captha and tons of rediculous other poop.

I am not lying, after a full day of work i was able to fill in a complaint, and even there i got stuck. Thinking finally i am there, they ask me to choose the type of problem, than it gives another sub option, if you choose that you  get another 2 sub, sub options, and if you do that you get another 2 suboptions where you have to fill in the purchase ID which i dont have because i was stuck at point where i wanted to buy something. Not too mention none of any option applied remotelly to the problems i have so i choose the options where it gave the less sub, sub, sub, sub, sub, sub options and the purchase ID i filled in, i dont have a f**ing ID yet  >:(

Such sites simply should be nuked by the US, the Russians, the Chinese, the French and any other nuclear capable country including  invading aliens that are blood thursty and wants to gangbang those webadmins from behind................

But alla do me a favor and test those 2 downloads :)

Steam only has a captcha if you fail to log in 10+ times in a row, and the files are fine. It's looking like a router from you to the US is corrupting packets.

Try these, they server is located on the east coast.

Yeah, I did. Same exact ones. I did nothing but rehost them. I would suggest calling your ISP and having them investigate, as it's clearly not the files. Should ask about steam too.. Steam's servers are located in Washington, which is much further than the east coast of the US.. something might be going on around there.

Either way, glad to help.

Thanks for the upload, at least i got the GOG logos now so i can add those properly.

As for Steam i got a reply back and they are just full of poop. The reply i got was no use at all and doesnt help me at all. I made it clear in my mail to them that i installed Steam to no vain, and the reply i got was, better install Steam.....

I had some 20 issues that i wanted to solve and they simply did sent me a standard reply. Useless crap company if you ask me.

And the installed Steam swiches on everytime you reboot your system, and i looked up how it can be disabled, well i cant. Its in the options to not have it started on boot, and again the chicken/egg story. I cant turn off the option because i am not logged in........

Windows key + R

type in "msconfig"

go to startup, uncheck steam. Save without exiting. Problem solved

I don't understand why you guys say that, I've never had a problem with steam like that. I've never heard a single quip about it from all of my steam friend list, although I'm sure almost all of them are from the US, as far as I know, only turboman isn't from the US..

Don't mind me, I'm just being paranoid about shady companies and their bloated DRM.

After a little try and error it worked, so that is solved for now, and thanks for the input :)

Like Turboman in am Dutch as well. And about Steam. I think the company makes things overly complicated, and if you have a problem you keep running in unsolvable circles. Which means as long as you dont have a problem, than its ok, but if you got one, than you really are in trouble.

I buy alot through Ebay, and all is fine as long as it works. But same thing there, if you have a problem, you cannot contact them at all. You simply cant, period!

And the same thing is happening with Steam. I had oné problem and that oné problem led to some 19 other issues simply because they have that "system". So i am now left with 20 problems that cannot be solved anymore...........

Than i am simple, if a company is like that, they suck. Period as well!

And at the end i will get my copy from Steam, but it means i have to do things i dont like to do, and more important, not in the way how i want it to happen.
