GW Press Strategy Guide. Cut Game Mode

I have both Unreal strategy guides. But the one i'm talking about is the GW Press version. On page 254 it mentions a game mode called Kill the Cow.

Here's a quote from the book.
"Kill the Cow - Unreal's version of Tag."

Strangely enough, on the tips for multiplayer section where it gives you some strategies for each game type on pages 257 to 261, the Kill the Cow gametype isn't even mentioned in those pages. Strange huh. What do you guys think?

Kill the Cow was a planned gametype that never made it to release. I think a friend of mine even planned a Kill the Cow mod at one point but it never happened.

Sounds like Nali Slaughter! Or Mutant, if the name's figurative.

I'm not sure if this is an obvious question or not, but what would the rules have been for "Kill the cow"?  I'm envisioning either that there's one cow that randomly spawns in the map that everyone makes a mad dash to kill or that each team has a cow in their base that they have to protect from the other team.

I always thought Kill the Cow would be like Monkey Tag from the N64 Turok games. A random person is transformed into a monkey and must make it into one of the lit pads to be transformed back to themselves. However it is just a guess :P

Code from the 1998 Beta:

Code: Select all

//=============================================================================
// KilltheCowGame.
//=============================================================================
class KilltheCowGame expands TeamGame;

var() float ReturnHeadScore;
var() float CaptureHeadScore;

function PreBeginPlay()
{
      local int i;

      for (i=0;i 10)
      {
            LifeTimer = 0;
            DrawScale = FMin(1.0, DrawScale + 0.05);
            Health = FMin(300, Health + 15);
      }
}

//FIXME - special spawn carcass (head + body)
// Also need the head to be inventory

Code: Select all

//=============================================================================
// CowShrine.
//=============================================================================
class CowShrine expands HomeBase;

var() byte TeamNumber;
I guess this game mode could be made, if the correct inventory items were made and the existing code was finished.

Huh. So two teams have a cow in a shrine, and you get points for killing the cow and taking the head somewhere.

Sounds like barely modified CTF.

I guess that would make this the first instance of a CTF gametype with a living flag. Now we know where Epic got the idea for the Submission gametype in Gears of War 2.

Kinda reminds me how Epic had always wanted a four-barreled shotgun in a game, so when the Quadshot for U1 didn't work out, they ended up making one for BulletStorm instead. ;D

That's the thing they'll ALWAYS screw up.

Why?

Because only Reggie Bannister from the Phantasm movies can make a quadshot properly and use it properly. No one else can.

The gametype is currently being worked on by UArchitect, a map was ported from the UT platform by me and RMFX. More info in the BUF thread.
