Reinstalling, textures and stuff

Post by Jazz Ad »

Hi all.
After a hiatus involving Borderlands, Prototype and various novelties, I felt a sudden urge to go back to my old love.
Unreal is without a doubt the game I played the most on PC.
Anyway, I'm a bit at loss with the downloads and necessary upgrades.
227f first, of course, this is a no brainer.

I have 2 versions of Unreal available. Anthology from a CD and Unreal Gold from Steam. Does it make a difference which one I use?

Since RTNP still isn't supported by 227f, I thought I could install both and keep one of them stock in case I feel like playing Na Pali. Sounds good?

Is Steam going to give me trouble if I modify the installed version or Unreal?

Now textures. Unreal is pretty old and my computer has completely unreasonable specs. Without a doubt it can handle super heavy textures.
If I want the best available quality, the way I understand it is, I should download the S3TC high-end then replace them with Extreme end texture when they're available? Correct?

Damn, I feel like a n00b. I haven't touched UnrealED for years.
Thanks for your help anyway.

Yeap, Steam is trouble. For starters, you can't use UnrealEd there, unless you create a junction. As for updating, it replaces the executable, but I don't know what Steam will think about doing that.

I think that ExtremeEnd already contains High End where applicable, but I'm not entirely certain.

I updated to 227f through Steam, it seems to work.
There are a lot less people on multiplayer than there was 3 years ago.
Aw well for a 12 year old game it isn't that bad.
I forgot how much fun it was.

And that last is the crux, the Extreme End indeed contain High End where applicable, but not vice versa, not all High End packages are available as Extreme End.

Which means that the "n00b"  ;) is entirely correct. You need to download the High End packages and than replace those with the available Extreme End packages.
