Hey, so reading that Next Gen preview in a previous thread got me curious about finding some of the other known early previews. Only, I was surprised to discover that none of the Unreal fansites have archived scans of those? Seems sort of odd to me, like its something that would be important (and fascinating) to have around.
Unfortunately, I wasn't subscribing to any of those magazines back then myself. But if anyone still has all their old issues and just simply doesn't know which issues to be looking for...in trying to dig for any magazine scans, I did come across the likely issue numbers of some of the important ones. So if it'll help any, here's what info I've found:
- PC Gamer Vol. 3 No. 7 (July 1996) - pg. 22-24
- Computer Games #76 (March 1997) - pg. 26
- Computer & Net Player Vol. 3 No. 10 (March 1997) - pg. 95
- PC Games #? (June 1997) - pg. ?

Re: More Unreal Magazine Previews?
Found your post via a google search and, hey here you go:
PC Gamer Vol 3 No 7
- PG 22
- PG 23
- PG 24
Computer Games Strategy Plus August 1996
- PG 25
Computer Games Strategy Plus March 1997
- PG 25
There's a few more I dug up this morning while leafing through the collection, but nothing really new or interesting. I'll try to get them scanned in over time. You may enjoy browsing the root directory there. I don't have the time to scan in full magazines, but I do like hitting up an article/review/preview here and there.

It's scary how many of the things mentioned in the article actually happened, like how Sweeney wanted a community of server-owners to develop, and how we got the ability to travel to different servers from map teleporters. Then there were the things that didn't make it, like the "Mythical creatures exist here" concept with the Dragon and the Minotaur, while other things that didn't make it eventually became mods, like how the "shapeshifting" mechanic didn't make it to release but came out later as a mod (remember MonsterCoop?), not to mention the idea of monsters coming out only at night was used in the Deadcity maps.
I bet if we came together as some sort of impromptu online-only game dev studio (yeah, like that totally worked for Epic...) and split into divisions (like patch 227 division and AlphaUnreal division, etc.) we'd be able to make this pre-alpha stuff a reality and combine it with 227. The combining of AlphaUnreal, BetaUnreal, OldUnreal (pre227) and NewUnreal (Current) would create the best game ever. Of course, such an enormously concentrated amount of awesome would cause reality to bend to the point that it snaps like a twig, so by the laws of nature (read: Real life issues) such an endeavor would not even come close to fruition.
Still though, it's cool to think about.
