Hello every 1:)

now first of all i know the topic name makes you think
what dus this do in the general forum part?
whell keep reading and youll know;)

the thing is i got an export from a map and as its an export
it whill have no textures if you import it.
now what i whant from you guys is to give this map a
nice urban texture job (zeitkind texture style is still one of the best ::)).

now your probaly thinking why the F would i do that? ur map is big and takes lots of time...
whell to be honnest if this scares you stop reading cuz i got plenty more work in the future:)
this map is gonna be part of my "lil" project for unreal
and once the project is done you gonna wish you joined it
cuz im gonna try making it that good with ur help:)

few simple rules:
1 the map has to be in a urban/city style
2 as far as credits go you can add ur name
to the lvlinfo together with my name in any order you like.
3 you may not choose a name for the map as it allready
has 1 (im just not gonna tell you yet cuz it whill be a huge spoiler and even if you know the name plz keep it to
yourself)
4 simple is better,so dont go overkill and make the map laggy
5 he who dus the best job earns a spot in the projects team
and a spot in the credits offcourse
6 ONLY USE 227F CLIENT

final note: im looking for more then mappers so any 1 who can do a crack job in scripting, sounds etc can add me on msn for more info
StOnEd-SnIpEr@chello.nl
if you dont have msn, send the map to:
r.momber@hotmail.com cuz i use thad adress for emails

Ehm what .. wait what? Seriously? I can understand people who use the default texture to make a layout but... how the hell can sombody make a map without the right textures? If I think about a beach map, I have to have the fitting texturs or at least HALF DECENT placeholders (worse textures), surely not ice textures or anything. Specially in the older games the textures are essential for a basic atmosphere. Details are "only" optional and make it perfect. Besides its not unusual if you have to build additional geometry which merges with the textures themself. Very simple example: Ancient. The Door textures. You use the 2D Shape editor to make the "black" part of texture passable (means the pixels of the textures which needs to be cut). I would not suggest you to start like this. A very bad idea.

Come on, if you have UT2004, I can suggest you
AS-FallenCity
or ONS-Urban.
If you check there the opened packages you might easily find the used textures, also most of the packages include more textures (only not used in the current map then). Simple appeal: Do it yourself.
I really dont know what you think, but texturing a map is MOSTLY one of the more enjoyable parts during constructing a map.
Nobody will be able to suit PERFECTLY your taste. At the end it will result on this way you would have done it better/different. And this how it starts. So. Just do it yourself. If you need textures, well thats an other story. You should get them, but please make the job by yourself. Its your map!

May I interprete that that you just want.. help to get better by yourself? Whats the big deal about that, dont want you be proud of doing that by yourself? I mean even with UEngine 3 mappers prefer to make that stuff by themself, even if it takes AGES sometimes. Of course its different in the game industry, team work is requiered to finish the product before the timeline. But thats supposed to an Unreal 1 map. Even if you invest detail work in your map, its still doable for one person within a fittingly time frame. I mean if you can not make textures by yourself, or models or you can not script, fine. Thats normal to ask somebody else for a small favour (of course if this is doable or worth the trouble). But do you really want to give your map in the hands of somebody else for the texturing process? And whats then? Giving the map somebody else because of the lighting...?
Tutorials are available and although the community is in todays times very very small, some pro mappers are still available, also on others boards like unrealsp.org. If you ask nicely for help, you won`t get dissapointed.
Actually UT2004 has some rather good urban textures. Specially if you want to keep your map VERY lowpoly, textures are even more important for the right feeling. If they suck, your map might be boring as hell. They dont need to be extreme highres, more important is the atmosphere (but then also a minimum amount of details for the right look). A guy called myth will surely approve my speech.

if you exported it from another game (i'm assuming tactical ops?) why not export it with the original textures in the first place?

It's always nice to see some politeness and courtesy from newcomers. I like that.

I think it's a neat idea to have multiple people give texturing a map a try. I also don't think it's worth getting bitter over (such a request). :/

I personally think it would be interesting to have people of various design skill levels take on this texturing feat. Why? It would be useful to help understand just how much texturing vs. geometrical complexity impacts a map's perceived quality. For example, in the Half Life series, everything is about texturing (as opposed to overly complex geometry).

I'd offer to help, but my time is saturated as it is. :(

Textures often rely on surfaces. For example, if there is no sunken brush on the edge of another, you can't create a trim, and they add a lot to the look of the map.

i don't think there's any need to get bitter over it either, but i can see the point creavion is trying to make.

whats the purpose of ripping a map from another game, Ripping it improperly without textures or anything, then asking people to texture it for him?

That would be like: let me turn a random unreal map into a broken mess and i'll ask someone else to fix it!

And from the way he reacted, he has to think better about how newcomers have to behave here.

Right. Thats an other reason why I see this as nonsense if the mapper does not do on his own.

@Hellkeeper and Turbo: Thx^^
