OldUnreal (Engine)

I am totally new to Unreal. Downloaded Unreal Gold and am trying to start a coop game over my LAN, but I cannot find the other computer after it has started a game. The computers run Win7 and Vista. We were able to coop using a cheaper Unreal download earlier so I don't know why I can't find the other player over my LAN using Unreal Gold...?

if it finds it or not you can always take an attempt over the IP.
Anyways, http://www.oldunreal.com/UnrealReference/index.htm explains most things.
Often those problems are firewall related however.
Maybe you can also try to update to 227f, but you will lose Unreal Gold extension RTNP then (but 227g with support for it will be released in the next time)

Thanks so much for your response. I am lost at Oldunreal! How can I set it up directly over the IP address? I am trying putting down the firewalls on both computers.

if you want to try with IP do:

open a console (f.e. with tab)
then enter:
"open IPAdress" while IPAdress has to replaced with the Lan IP of the computer you want to connect to, like:
"open 192.168.0.2"
But without the "" of course.

If you don't know the Lan IP of your PC, a quick way is to run "cmd" in the search field of your vista/win7 and once the black dos box appears:
enter "ipconfig"

I'm good on finding the IP address - thanks, this worked. Putting down the firewalls did not. Another question, if you can advise - We played several levels, saved on both machines, and then tried to start up where we had left off - and it started us with fresh, unarmed players. We could *see* our previous players standing there, but could not jump back into them. Is there any way to keep continuity with the same player and weapons/items? (short of a cheat code!)

it is possible, but requires a few mods.
Usually a coop server is meant to be started and left running, so it keeps the same level as left. If you leave the server then your current items are gone. It's not working like an Unreal SP game which you can save.

There are mods however which can give your inventory back and recovers your score, but don't know exactly which mod does what (not so often setting up a coop server).
Maybe JCoopZ does already all you need.

Other than that 227g will have an inventory save function already included, but it will take a few weeks yet until I can release it probably.

I checked that site. The JCoopz v130.7 just has a note to this effect:

"-Fixed bTravelScores issue of a new player's current level score not being restored after rejoining. Negative scores are also restored when traveling to new maps."

.... But nothing about weapons/items.

You'd better buy original Unreal not pirate. The 9.99 USD for all anthology is not too much.

But does that deal with the issue I've raised? About continuing a multiplayer, not losing items/weapons? I am happy to buy it if so.

1 Check that you've got adniminstrator account
2 if you have got a firewall - turn off it
3 Get a JCoopZ mod like Smirftsch sayd
4 And oldunreal 227 patch for UGold
5 If you don't see weapons and items set "play as spectator" to "no"
There is one reasons that you haven't seen invetory. Your ping is too low. I've got same problem with LAN and i had to create internet server - you can create like me but if you don't wan't have another players from world set a difficult password.

I tried installing the 227 patch and then JCoopZ just to see what diff they would make. The main problem to start with is that after we start a coop game, we cannot "save" the game at all. Maybe there is a different way to do that after intalling 227/jcoopz?

You can't save the multiplayer game. It's only for single player.
If you don't wan't play from the beginning write on the console: open nameOfmap

example:
open thesunspire

1 Create a txt document (for example give it name weapons.txt)
2 write there all af you want (weapons,pickups etc) when playing

when playing server write in console exec nameOfdocument (in this case exec weapons.txt)

I am playing Unreal 1 for the first time. I had read in several places that it has a Coop mode where players can go through the whole game together. I guess in theory this is correct, the only caveat is that you have to play the entire game in one sitting, because according to what you've said, there is no way to save it! Forum posts tend to be very unclear. I had played Quake 2 some years ago with my kids and we were able save and resume with all progress & inventory. I guess you're saying there is no way to do this in Unreal - you have to add all items back to yourself in the console. How do you adjust your health?

For Health:

I just tried doing today as you instructed - start a multiplayer coop and 'open' the map where we want to start. Keep in mind that I have added patch 227 and jcoopz. Well, the game would not let me do it. Even when I selected a different map to start the game, UG kept placing me at Vortex2 (after flashing the startup screen for the chosen level for about 1 second). What could be going on here?

On our other computer (where I did not add 227 or jcoopz), we were able to go to certain maps. However I don't know how to resume play at the *level* where we were last time. How do you start a multiplayer game at a certain *level*?

you have to use the open command when you are in game (Vortex2) already
also possible "switchlevel level"

besides- it does not matter for these things if you are using 226 or 227 the commands and the behavior are the same.

Can you explain what "keeps inventory and score" means? As I have understood it, there is no way to save a coop game so that all players can resume a saved game where they left off and keep the same inventory and score. If we resume a saved game, it gives us a new character. We see our "old guys" standing there but cannot jump back into their skins.

Thanks for all the tips! With each message we're learing a bit more of what we need to know to play. Now here is the problem: my son was messing around with his character and did some things in the console, but now his character is behaving in odd ways and he can't clear the codes. Amongst other problems, the character was invisible and flying or anti-grav. How can we clear out this character and start with a fresh new player?

you maybe turn on spectator player. To reset player model press ESC game>multiplayer>player setup and change character with your arrow buttons
