Some VERY interesting things in WAR-Hostile

For those of you who don't know, there was a map released in the Titan Pack for UT3 titled WAR-Hostile. The map took place on Na Pali, and you could hear the sounds of Titans and Slith in the distance (though how you can hear a Slith from far away is unknown :-?).
The map is a Humans vs. Necris fight, and according to the story of the map, as we know there have been many vessels lost on Na Pali, including research vessels. Nobody retrieved anything because according to them, the creatures of Na Pali are very dangerous (and they totally weren't owned by a single person in the past

). But then the Necris are all like "hey we want that stuff" and NEG says "no u cant have stuff" and fighting ensues.
But that doesn't matter. What I really wanted to talk about were the easter eggs in the map. One of them is interesting. In the map, there are two stone formations that look a lot like Titans in the map. If you shoot them in the head, you hear the muffled sound of a Titan come from the statue. That means they're Stone Titans! Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you see it) they don't come to life and beat the crud out of everyone. That would be awesome...
Er, moving on. The second thing I want to talk about is VERY interesting. Somewhere in the map is a cave hidden by vines. There is a pile of rocks blocking the rest of the way in with a hole in the middle. You can see is a light coming from inside the cave, and you can also hear the sounds of a Nali! He doesn't come out of the cave however, but you can fire grenades into the cave and actually kill him! Actually the "Nali" is just a trigger that turns off the light and activates a kismet sequence to stop the Nali sounds, but still, it's refreshing to see Epic putting in little references to the original game in UT3. It makes me hopeful that MAYBE they'll stop with the UT and GoW games for just a moment and work on an Unreal 3 for the diehard fans of the original game.
So there was my utterly pointless post. Hope you enjoyed reading it... or something....

I always thought an unreal 1 remake would be easily done, and they could add so much more atmosphere.
They could easily add a somewhat more interactive story and throw some gameplay elements in.. or just leave it like it is but with better technology. like holographic translator logs or somesuch. or maybe audiologs or some such. They could increase the size of the prisoner ship to accomodate more dead prisoners/audio logs to find to increase the saturation of the story throughout the levels. A few liberties to create a refreshed experience..
as long as it has coop and it sticks to the unreal style, i'll be fine.
One can dream..

Don't forget the Vortex sounds in DM-Morbias. Or Unreal II references, like the Scorpion's boost ability or Nakhti Scorpions in UC2.

Before they really do anything with the Unreal series in general, they'll be working on both GOW3 and Bulletstorm with People can Fly Studios. Then, if they are going to return to Unreal, they're going to be working on something they've apparently already put some time into concerning the premise, which has been kept pretty much on the down low. This is one of the main reasons, along with others, that Epic doesn't want the UDK to be used for an Unreal related game, so there are at least two options. One, this Unreal game they plan to make is expected to surpass anything Epic has ever done before and they it will be a definite success, or two, they think it will be good, but it will suck, or at least not live up to the expectations people will have for the game. Hopefully, though, they can revive the series well enough to satisfy people like the ones on these forums who love the original's take on the future of humans and space travel and shooting and having generally badass protagonists.

I can't think of any other possible outcomes. Either you make it good, or you make it bad.

Hey, come to think of it, I haven't played DM-Morbias in UT3...
Wait, how is the scorpion boost ability a reference to Unreal 2? I don't remember that happening in the game. Or are you talking about XMP?

He's talking about XMP, the Raptor vehicle functions in a similar way to UT3 scorpion.

And where is the uc2 reference supposed to be?

You meant U2 reference in UC2? It's Nakhti Scorpions, they are reskinned Dispersion Pistols. As for UC2 reference in UT3, well, half the game is, since UT3 is essentially a mix of UC2, UT2004 and UT2007.

UT2007
is UT3

. By that logic, UT2003 is a mix of UC and UT2

Umm, in fact it is. I have discussed these things in detail with a reliable source, and their development cycles are very interesting to say the least.

No, when I said "UT2" I meant... never mind. >.

He meant that ut2003 actually is ut2.
GE - No !
HK - Yes !

That's a matter of perspective. If you treat UT2 as the period, then UC1, UT2003 and UT2004 are all UT2. If you take UT2 as the actual product that was under development, then it's only a part of UT2003 and even a lesser part of UT2004.

I take "UT2" as the product that was developed and evolved into what we know as UT2003 (and its counterpârt on xbox, uc1), and then latter was expanded into ut2004, exactly like UT2007 evolved as ut3. I guess it's just a matter of naming and codenaming products as long as they're not released.

But at the same time, you have to take into account that before UT2 was ever UT2, Epic had ideas to make Unreal Warfare. They didn't, but a lot of early ideas from that were put into UT2004, and when the time came around and they had worked on the concept (and the UE3) a little bit more, it became Gears of War, and UT3 was based mostly on UT99, with the vast areas and gametype concepts from UT2004, fixed, improved upon, and added upon in many ways, including the fact that they used the technology that was available with the UE3.

Indeed. Like I've said, the development schemes are quite interesting, and complicated. If drawn, they would probably look like a large block of Kismet

LOL. Though actually, I like Kismet a lot considering I don't have to know chunks of code, rather, rules of coding and how to better stuff like bugs. All to one's own. I do need to learn UScript though.

Haha, I know what that looks like. I love Kismet to death. It was the best thing to hit a game engine in my opinion. I'm still learning though, but I've recently begun learning how they create the water effects. I used that knowledge to make a good looking Sun material.
Can you imagine how easy it would be to recreate Assault maps using Kismet? Everything that links up to other things are all in one place with clear indications of what goes to what instead of the old way of when a trigger references something, it shows a red line going from the trigger to the object.
Kismet is so powerful it's no wonder most custom maps use Kismet to handle some kind of weird gimmick in their maps (in my map DM-Helios, after 2 minutes and 30 seconds of play time, the whole map gets toasted by the Sun, and everybody dies except for the person who grabbed the invulnerability powerup in time

)

I always had an irrational love for the old school pack of scripted triggers piled up in a corner of the map and strange actors in every place. It's even better with the event lines being visible in UE1.
