well, as owner and creator of Oldunreal, as well as developer for 227, it's time for me to answer too I think

* How long have you been involved in the Unreal scene?
Since the first shipment of Unreal

* What about Unreal interested you the most?
In the first place my lack of skill to master this game, but its ambiente, it's love for details, the mystery in it, it's own unique style, it's graphics and of course the people who play it.

*Do you consider yourself a true gamer, or this title in particular grabbed your attention?
I love to play a game and I play sometimes other games too, but I always come back to my old love Unreal. But at the moment I'm probably more of a coder than gamer.

* How long have you been playing video games?
Guess it must be something like 1982.

*Do you work on Unreal part-time, full-time, weekends, etc?
yes, yes, yes and yes.

* What do you do in your spare time?
see above.

* Do you work a job as well?
If my health allow it yes.

* If so, what do you do for a job?
Everything PC related, from maintenance to setting up servers. Linux and Windows based. Webdesign, teaching basic PC skills, Office and administration, also communication systems.


But one thing needs to be said: I'm running this page for and with the community. The forum here is the heart of the page and without my friends here it would be impossible to have such a page. Same for coding of 227- without the community and some real hard working friends many things couldn't have been realized.

How long have you been involved in the Unreal scene?
Around the year 2000. I started by just playing deathmatch. I discovered coop a few years later. In 2003 I started my own Unreal server which was a starting point to get involved with the community. For the server I needed mods and expansions which brought me into contact with various mod developers for which I did considerable beta testing. For my server I also created a support website which grew over time into a more general Unreal site. Still mostly oriented to the Unreal coop scene.

Nowadays I'm far less involved. I still check forums daily but I'm far less active in the game.


What about Unreal interested you the most?
First the atmosphere of the game and the graphics/tech side. Unreal was a ground breaking game for it's time. The tech side is still important to me. I love how developments like Unreal patch 227 and the Unreal Re-Texturing project really lifted the old game to the next level.

I also love to run my own server, and really create a new gaming experience with all the great add-ons that the community produced. I also love the community itself. It is wonderful to see how everyone has it's own valuable role in the matrix. Together we are really an outstanding group who have taken the game to a level I would not have imagined as possible back in 1998.

Do you consider yourself a true gamer, or this title in particular grabbed your attention?
I have been quite hardcore in Unreal. At a certain time Unreal almost was my life. Today I only play Unreal casually. Last year I'm far less into gaming in general and I'm also being distracted by great titles as Guild Wars in which I spend more time during the last years. Also, real life is more important now.

How long have you been playing video games?
Since I could grab my hands to it. For me this was when I could afford to buy a gameboy (Yes, that old gray nintendo thingie) from my pocket money.

Do you work on Unreal part-time, full-time, weekends, etc?
Only casually nowadays. Around once or twice a week. Checking out my servers and to see what's new at other servers. And sometimes an old-fashioned game of DeathMatch!

What do you do in your spare time?
Gaming, learning, surfing the web, and some social / real life activities with the people around me.

Do you work a job as well?
Yes, I do.

If so, what do you do for a job?
I work as IT admin, maintenance and support dude in a quite general organisation. Solving problems, supporting users, network and server maintenance, backup. A bit of anything really. Just what needs to be done at that moment.

The editor, at first. Then I got pulled in by the thrill of deathmatch. That is, of course, when people still played dm.

Not really. In my younger days, yeah. Now, it's more of a hobby.

Since getting a Commodore 64 when I was ten. I didn't even get a PC 'til I was 19. In between, there was SNES and N64.

When I can be bothered. I usually get sporadic bursts of motivation to jump into UnrealEd. This lasts a week or two, then nothing until the next time.

What do you do in your spare time?

Mastu... oh. Things, y'know. Long walks on the beach, Pina Coladas at sundown, gang-related violence. The usual.

Do you work a job as well?

Ok, you're surely much better to AoE than I am (never managed to beat the single player campaigns in easy mode and never won a deathmatch above easy mode), but as someone who loves eastern-Europe history and Age of Empires, THIS sounds so AWESOME that I want it NOW ! Send me a link !

I've sometimes thought about making a single player campaign in AoE2 about the christianisation of the slavs by Cyrill and Methode, but never had the motivation to start.

In fact, I never released it as that was a really long time ago... Not even sure if I still have the files... Though I remember having an AoE folder in my "Backup" DVD, so I can check to see if it's there.

This reminds me - one of the aspects why coding for a game is better than writing a new program is that you actually play when you test things Otherwise coding would be pretty dull.

That also reminds me of my thoughts when I first saw Unreal (don't forget that it was in 2006 or something like that): first of all, I was really impressed with the flyby. I honestly didn't expect a game that old to have anything like that epic intro. Too bad that Tournament games don't have anything even remotely similar to the intros Unreals had.
Another thing that was very surprising was the deathmatch spawn effect. It felt as if someone kicked me right into the game! Back then I used to jump each time after spawning to further increase the effect Nowadays I don't even notice it...

I still do the jump thing.
I discovered Unreal in 2005 after a lot of time spend on UT2003, 2004, U2 and UT and though it was much older and more primitive than the others, I immediately felt that there was a very special atmosphere in the game (something which, incidentally, increased my appreciation of UT which used a lot of assets from it).

The first arrival in the NaPali Haven with All Hallows Sunset is definitely a memorable moment.

I like new games from time to time, but retro is what its really about for me. I especially am addicted to Super NES still, soooo many classic games. I have way too many consoles and games stacked around my room.. ahh so many fun games!

I never really got into Halo. I guess it was because by the time Halo came out on XBox, PC already had a ton of games similar or better to it imo
Dont get me wrong, I beat it, but it felt late to me as a PC gamer.

LoL, we were all noobs at once And after seeing how everybody carries themselves in here, Im sure people will be more than willing to help you solve your port fowarding issues. (If thats the problem anyway, from what I gathered)

Ive read like.. 6 books in my life? The rest are all tech manuals and RPG's lol.

"teaching basic PC skills" You know, I actually considered doing this myself. I enjoy teaching people new things, and I seem to be quite good at it. Back when I repaired computers on-site, people (A.K.A. Hoverbots, the ones that loom over your shoulder asking a bazillion questions while your JUST TRYING TO FIX THEIR POOTER) would ask me to give them detailed instructions on how to do something, and always said they understood very well and liked my teaching style. So yea, I enjoyed that feeling.

Do you still run your own server now? If so, is it a co-op or DM, both?

Nothing wrong with the old school fat and clunky Gameboy! Dropped mine a couple times and that bad boy fired right up again and again!

Ah another IT guy! I have to admit, I know quite a bit about the IT field, hardware/software/networking etc. But I never got even an ounce of the enjoyment out of it as I do playing or creating video games, however, the potential income is pretty tempting lol.

Ah Commodore 64, I actually have the mobile version of one with the screen built inside. Thing weighs like 25 freaking pounds, but the idea and concept are pretty cool.

Yeah, Halo is pretty generic. Nothing really exciting about it and is an easy pick up and play piece of software. I got it cheap, so either way I'm not bothered. I decided Halo is now retro enough for me to play it... Haha.

Man, SNES... I used to play Mario Kart when I was living in a hostel but all the other people there refused to play me because I always won. Has to be done... Though I will always have a soft spot for sonic... I was a Sega gal!

Uh yea, Im not exactly a pro when it comes to forum posting Well so far you have mentioned Halo, Krazy Ivan, Mario Kart, Beyond Divinity, Devistation and Delta Force. I have never played Krazy Ivan or Beyond Divinity however, but those other games are great games. Whoever said you have bad taste was prolly a NOOB! Like what I did there? lol

Ok seriously... all this talk of old games is making me want to play some of the classics.. comon people, Metroid, ExciteBike, Chrono Trigger, Zelda, Contra, Mario, etc etc! So many awesome titles.

As for the port issues, did you happen to foward the port in both your router and firewall settings? (if using windows that is)

They are full game runs if you happen to stick around to finish it. I played co-op with my brother over LAN once and it was awesome.
And if you haven't played co-op... Well, you miss like 50% of Unreal

For about 9 years, since early 2001. I played online lots from 2003-2005, back when I was the leader of MARS clan. Launched 'Gatherstone - Buster's Unreal Gold Site' in 2005, and I've been actively involved with OldUnreal for several years.

The people I've met over the years. The GAMEPLAY and the game's neat storyline. The wonderful world of UnrealEd, and all of its inhabitants. And have I mentioned the people? Yes, definately the people.

I used to be a hardcore gamer, years ago. I've had to deal with quite a few addictions over the last 3 decades, but the only FPS I've really liked lots is Unreal 1. I've played all sorts of games on all sorts of platforms, but the games I seems to return to are more RPG types.

Here's a brief list of a few 'additions' I've had:
Star Trek, Joust, Super Mario World 3, Quake, Zelda O of T, Turok 2, Tiger Woods 99, Baulder's Gate, Diablo 2, Metal of Honor, GTA Vice City, Outlaw Golf 2, Brothers In Arms, Battlefield 2, Cabal, Fable TLC.

And I've played abit with these other engines:
Genesis, Morfit, Conitec A5, Torque.

In an article in PCGamer mag several years ago, they voted on the WORST named video game ever. 'Unreal' won.

Played my first PC game when I was 12, back in 1978. It was a 'text' game on a TRS model one. I would've played alot more, but computers were VERY rare, and I was allowed to sit on the floor at Radio Shack for only so long. Meanies. I guess the honest answer is 'when I have the time,' but mostly on weekends. I do check up on these forums EVERY day, at least once. Ah, that map I don't really remember it now, but it was supposed to be a kind of endurance test or something I think, those lions and alligators are supposed to kill you But it's been such a long time that I really don't remember.

Lol....I've beaten the original game so many times, I don't even run the normal maps on my server anymore...I run all custom.

I think most severs are like that now a days...the only normal-ish server left really is Zombies as far as I've been too.

Well, that's exactly what I do. Collections and legal work. I'd go into more details, but that'd defeat the purpose of why I need a "registered alias" and various security checks to do my job.
